  1. I've recently started my new project. It's a 27" Baritone 7-string guitar, and I thought I would post some pics. The speclist looks like this: Explorer style body made from birch 27" Scale birch neck with birch fingerboard, and a Ken Lawrence style headstock (not a direct copy, will draw this myself) 24 jumbo frets Hardtail bridge Dimarzio Evolution 7 pickup, with coil split Allparts Keystone (tulip shape) tuners Schaller straplocks I got all the parts today, but problems ocurred. I only got 6 ferrules, but I specified 7, and they didn't have my string bushings in stock. I will however call the guys tomorrow and see what they can do for me The body is sawn and roughly sanded, and the neck blank is planed. Not in the pics though, but I planed it after those were taken Pics were big, so... The body, planed, before drawing from the template http://jonasbygdemo.blogg.se/images/dscn1212_1189722995.jpg The body drawn out http://jonasbygdemo.blogg.se/images/dscn1214_1189723079.jpg The body after sawing, before sanding http://jonasbygdemo.blogg.se/images/dscn1216_1189723291.jpg The body after rough sanding http://jonasbygdemo.blogg.se/images/dscn1218_1189722883.jpg Don't know if you guys can see the pics. If not, let me know! Yes, the gluelines are wider than the Grand Canyon, but it's my second project, and I'm not superskilled with a handplaner. I left a lot of material around the neck pocket, since an Explorer doesn't have much material in that area. This is to make the routing easier, but that will be cut down when the neck pocket is routed.
  2. Thanks! So the center of the rod should be around 7th-9th fret?
  3. Ok thanks! But where should the rod end if it were of the perfect length?
  4. Well, it looks like a standard truss rod is 18" in length, for a normal scale. I don't really know what you based calculations off of, though... I based it off a strat-style rod which was 445mm long, and in some way I came up with 471mm...but it seems a bit short....
  5. I've done some calculating and I've come up with the length 471mm (18.5" I think). Does that make any sense at all, or have I misscalculated? For a 27" scale length that is...
  6. Thanks for the tip! I just realized that I can take a U-beam style bass rod (second build, so a one-way feels like a little too much work), and just chop it down. Why didn't I think of that? What length should I go for?
  7. Hi all. I've ran into a problem that I hope you guys can help me with. I'm currently planning my new project, a 7-string 27" Baritone guitar. My question is, do I need longer truss rods, or could I use a standard length rod? The answer feels kind of obvious, but you never know...
  8. Uhm...yes, the epoxy brought out the grain and colour! Lost my breath when I saw that pic! Awesome build!
  9. Sexy guitar! By far the sexiest 8-stringer I've seen so far!
  10. Honestly, how serious build can this be? He probably dit it so he could brag about having the first 13-string bass, and (as stated earlier) he lacks lots of planning for an extended bass! If he wanted the first 13-string bass, he could've at least make a serious build of it!
  11. If you're going to make bodies, SolidWorks is overkill! AutoCAD is easy to learn and it's very good! Probably cheaper than SolidWorks too (if you want to have a clean soul and not download of course)
  12. The horns look like they will break off, looks like there is too little material left
  13. The pickups in my Yamaha has exposed coils, and those pickups are active. The Musicman Stingray is active, isn't it? Those pickups have exposed coils.
  14. The most beautiful bass I've ever seen! Don't even know what to say other than that!
  15. 7-string Explorer style (body modified from standard explorer, more curves and stuff) Les Paul Junior DC 6-string bass Rhoads V or Washburn/Lyon V
  16. Got the bass home today from the musicstore (nut filed), and I'm very impressed! Although, some problems needs to be taken care of. The pickups are WAAY to high, so the notes actually distorts, and the tone knob (maybe pot?) has a glitch. It kinda cuts the guitar off if I turn it down too fast I'm suspecting a bad solder joint. This should be sorted out though! The sound was very impressing! Very Primus-ish agressive J-bass sound (AWESOME for funk/slap!), and it feels very fast, especially compared to my Yamaha RBX375 (which I've always felt is kinda fast). One of the best slap-basses I've played actually, because it easy to get a nice, strong attack with your thumb. Overall, I'm glad to see that it turned out the way it did, and with those small problems to fix, I will have my main funk bass ready for punishment
  17. After my extensive research (5min Google), my guess i alder....the leaves and the bark seems to match up... (couldn't find a decent pic of the real deal, but found this painting)
  18. I like the stripes, but you should have filled the pickup routing. Looks strange with that big of a hole and that small pickup. Besides that, two thumbs up!
  19. DEFINATELY the most beautiful finish ever! Awesome work dude!
  20. Kid? Don't know if I'm a kid 6'5" 104kg (think its around 220lbs or something) is a HUGE kid! Thanks! I actually got an A in this class, so I'm kinda happy about it
  21. Finally! Almost finished! Only thing left on this one is to make a nut, that I've milled to a block at this point in time. The nut is made of brass. Tomorrow I will probably do the rest, since I didn't have the measurements for it, so I just kinda...did something The bass have been on a show or whatever you wanna call it. Since this was a woodworking class, we put our creations on display this week. People made like bowls and some other random stuff, so my bass really stuck out. It even earned me an interview from the local newspaper (from which the picture is taken, with a little PS editing by my sister), with me in the background. I spent two days in the garage sanding and lacquering and oiling and so on. 3 days before the show. So it kinda was a last minute finish. The body is sprayed with clear lacquer, and neck is oiled.
  22. Looks nice! Start this thing so we can see some more pics!
