  1. Eddie, how much did you pay for the blanks? PS Very nice work!
  2. Have a look at some of the diemnsions on this site According to the website, EMG 81, 85, 60 and a couple others are 2.75"x1.50" (doesnt say what depth). I guess you could look at all these mesaurements and make the routing as big as the biggest here, that way the guitar has a good chance of fitting many different pickups. Stewmac sell router templates, they must allow for a number of different brands, although i dont know the dimensions of the template itself. In my opinion, i would buy the pickup first, you can then work from those dimension, maybe make the routing a bit bigger to allow for other makes of pickup you may want to install in the future. Thats what i did. You mentioned the swimming pool routing method, that can affect tone (removing alot of wood) and ive also been told that its better to have separate pickup chambers so that theres something inbetween the pickups. This can obviously be ignored if you're only gonna use one humbucker. Can anyone else confirm the pros and cons of the swimming pool method?
  3. Learning my mistakes is a good way to go....but there would have to be strict rules about p*ss taking or slamming people, otherwise it'd never work
  4. Ibanez and other companies certainly fly in the face of that rule. They look to be 1" or under. If Mr. Hiscock has been quoted right, i wonder why alot of companies dont use that rule
  5. As for dimensions, pickups can vary quite alot. Seymour duncan and emg definately have dimensions on their site. Depth wise, it depends on how your mounting the pickups. If you're using a scratchplate or mounting rings, it isnt as crucial as say, mounting them to the body itself
  6. Ive only seen single humbucker configurations with the pickup at the bridge. A bridge pickup tends to be hotter (more output) because the strings dont move as much compared with middle and neck positions. There is a certain amount of artistic licence when placing pickups. One of the ESP Stephen Carpenter signature models has two pickups very close to eachother at the bridge (someone suggested that he may be using two bridge-type humbuckers). What will and wont work will be governed by what kind of sound/tone you want and what pickups you actually use.
  7. I probably wouldnt name a guitar after my name...."what guitar you got?", "its a Fidge" doesn't really have a ring to it does it?!
  8. Being of simple mind......could you use the dyed poly as the final finish or would you then have to clear the body as well with something else? I also get rather confused with all the products and terminology...when you say 'poly', i assume you mena polyurethane?
  9. Not that selfish? I disagree. Suicide may relieve personal pain but what about the unbearable pain to be suffered by loved ones you leave behind? Working through the **** and making the best of what you get dealt is real bravery. I dont mean to offend you Dan, i just think its a real waste of a person. I hope you can get through it
  10. That one is a cyclone in the current range along with This HH Cyclone and this 3 x single coil cyclone I see where you're coming from on the obese thing
  11. Personally i'm not too keen on it, i think its the combination of colour/pickups/bridge that just doesnt appeal to me. Ignoring the colour, i think this one is alot better looking
  12. Say you wanted the string action to be 3/16", would you install the nut so that the bottom of the groves are 3/16" above the frets?
  13. Could you add some kind of adhesive or lock-tight to the thread to keep it in place? On the other hand i guess it would be a pain if it needed to come off again
  14. I have a locking nut kicking around with top mount holes. The hole are countersunk, so its and easy to get the screws to sit flush
  15. Do i spot abit of rudeness in the bottom left of the body? Looks cool Rob, you've certainly made some nice specimens recently. FYI, my friend has some Marvel comic tatoos!
  16. You have a serious amount of dicipline there! Did you have many problems with alignment and getting it to look that good?
  17. fair enough, i guess your point is exemplified by the fact that the body i have is plywood! Im definately seeing this as a practice project, right now, im sure i'd mess one up if i went the whole 9yards. Are you after genuine fender stuff then - mex/usa? Cos that'll still be pricey even if 2nd hand, USA necks go for £70 easy on ebay and thats blown your body/nek buget on just a neck.
  18. If you do a search, you'll find a couple of threads started on this (by meself actually). I can merely pass on the onformation i was given: It can be done but the bridge will either need to be recessed into the body or the neck angled. This is beacuse the Floyd would sit high quite on top of the body and the string action would be rather high. Changing the neck angle may be complicated or undesirable, perhaps recessing the tremolo into the body is a better idea. I am actually in the process of a conversion....its going slowly as i dont have a neck at the moment. I am planning on having zero neck angle and recessing the trem. The depth of the recess cannot be calculated until i know the exact dimensions of the neck. Sorry i can't provide any more information although i may post a tutorial if sucessful... Chris
  19. Johnny, im doing the same!! I have already aquired a strat body (unfortunately it is ply-wood but i figure its a first project so im not too fussed). I notice that there quite a few necks on ebay (.co.uk not .com). There was a guy selling squire necks brand new (or near brand new in mint condition). Most of his auctions were 'buy it now' ranging £35-£45, handy if you dont wanna wage war with other bidders. Think he's got a couple on there now.
  20. Ive been to Black Gang Chine. I got some coloured sand in a bottle as a momento of the trip, it was 10years ago! Has anyone seen the Eddie Izzard sketch he did in San Francisco? He referred to europe as "y'know, where the history is" and he imagines US tour guides saying things like "...and this was built 70 YEARS ago". Im not taking the p*ss out of the US, just makes me chuckle
  21. I asked the same uestion alittle while back and this is basically the response i got: Turned fully clockwise or anti-clockwise, a linear pot(tone) will sound exactly the same as a logarithmic pot (volume). When you think about, a log and linear pot of 500k rating will both be 500k when turned all the way up and when turned all the way 'down' that must be zero resistance hence they must sound the same at those extremes. The difference is the pot is how they to that max. or min. resistance, a log pot will reach its extremes alot quicker than a linear pot. In simple terms, it would appear that the linear (tone) pot, will allow finer tuning of the tone of your sound.
  22. I voted one Design three would be good for a 3+4 setup (as mentioned by feylya), but i also agree with Lex thats its too pointy.
  23. You said you were doing a 'drop top', what does that actually mean? Is there more than one way of gluing the top on?
