  1. laser cut some templates for a solid body to practice, itd probably be easier since theyre basically 2 dimensional (z axis would be the thickness of the material cut)
  2. I think he meant just make a new body and use a premade (soulmate) neck
  3. My first came out decent, not many people can spot out the defects unless they really study it. My neck pocket came out messed up and there were some mistakes filled with wood glue but it sounds great and looks the part for what i play (heavy rock/punk). The second one is starting to look similar to the first mistakes wise but it's a much more technical build
  4. Yeah I thought about the afterburner, but I might go with the "active conversion kit" from GFS, not sure yet though haha thanks, originally I was going to do traditional f-holes but then realized the back cover would show through the bottom f-hole so that idea got scrapped and the lightning bolt just looks cool
  5. So I started this one during my winter break from college and figured I'd share it. Ive already made a few mistakes but overall I like it http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6430/n1...04868571se9.jpg http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/1706/n1...04878828pz2.jpg http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6900/n1...04889050ui3.jpg http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/1218/n1...06156121mr1.jpg http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/245/n12...06166568nb6.jpg http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4088/n1...06187224yv1.jpg the maple has a little flame that I'm hoping will come out a little more when it gets stained. Right now the color will be black in the grain and red as the main. The back is african mahogany, the neck is the same with the top part of the scarf joint being the same maple as the top and the back heel block is also the maple. Not sure about the pickups right now, I have no money so I have time to decide . the original plan was to have this be my all around guitar since my first project (strat copy w/ SD sh-8 invader) doesn't play that well with the clean channel, but I also like really hot bridge pickups so I might add a switchable "active circuit" in. Thanks, Matt
  6. very nice, Im halfway through a prs-ish semi-hollow ("u" routed) thats probably close to the same thickness and I'm hope it turns out sounding similar to yours. What neck angle did you end up using/ whats the scale length?
  7. my reply was if he wanted to use a strat bridge with no neck angle over a TOM, if you still want the TOM disregard my post
  8. don't quote me but I'm pretty sure on a strat the neck is 1/16-1/8" higher then the body without the fretboard (can't exactly remember). This means rather then recessing a strat bridge like WezV said you can plane that thickness off the body and leave the part covered by the fretboard the thickness it is now
  9. Yeah thats what I meant, its just harder to explain without pictures. I decided to do the "U" route so I'll be sure to update on the tone and response once the build is complete Thanks
  10. Im working on a PRS semi hollow style guitar (mahogany back, carved maple top w/f holes) and was wondering if theres a difference with the sound and strength with hollowing with a big "U" chamber or using 2 separate chambers leaving a center block going through the length of the body?
  11. wow, thats a really nice looking top. Any idea on the color?
  12. I was reading Setchell's blog (LP build) and was wondering why a pickup plane angle is needed and how this angle is determined (same as neck angle?) Thanks, Matt
  13. ^he didnt say he built it, he found it on a search
  14. did you put the two pieces through a jointer before gluing them? it looks like theres a gap between them
  15. I figured it out last night and forgot to post. I opened up the amp and checked out the main board. Looks like between the heat and the vibrations one of the copper tracks printed on the board came off and shorted out on a capacitor close by. The inside of the amp had a weird smell and there was a burn mark right by that capacitor. The track was burnt away so I soldered a jumper wire between the two points where the track used to be and its all good now.
  16. My amp (fender frontman 15) just started to get a really bad hum to it today. Ive played 3 different guitars through it so I know the guitar isn't the problem, and 2 different cables so I dont think its that either. I noticed that if I touch the metal part of the handle and my guitar strings at the the same time the humming stops. Any idea on how to fix this?
  17. how big are the bodies on these guitars usually? Itd be cool to do a nice prs kinda copy, the wood would definitely be cheaper
  18. a guy posted a link to dl a pdf with a bunch of popular styles in another thread http://www.megaupload.com/?d=L3J0DHZO look through those
  19. So I started this one at the beginning of summer, I wanted something semi unique so here it is (btw, I'm 18 so don't be too critical) http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/4624/dscf0006vr9.jpg http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/3637/dscf0064sh0.jpg http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/1967/dscf0042vh7.jpg http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1585/dscf0004wo3.jpg Specs: 2 piece alder body/ maple neck w/ side dots (tung oil finish) American fender hardtail bridge Seymour Duncan SH8 invader (bridge) Single volume control with push/pull coil tap you can see the rest from the pics I had a lot problems, like building the body before the neck, messing up the neck and having to build another one, crappy router bits, and the templates were wrong. The guy who sold me the templates never responded to my emails, so thats the end of buying templates from them, I'll probably make my own. Overall it's decent, but I'm already planning my next one
  20. did you make sure the bridge was grounded?
  21. i was reading a progress thread on another site (some tele site) and the guy used a random orbital sander w/200 grit to level the top, that might work if youve got a flat top
  22. print it full sized attach it to w/e you want to make the template out of (hardboard/mdf) rough cut it on a bandsaw or similar tool use files to clean it up around the edges sand till edges are smooth
  23. theyve also got a schematic for a single push-pull pot for vol + tone that looked pretty cool
