G_urr_A
Ok, I'm getting closer to finnishing my first guitar, and I need a cheap and easy way to do it. A roller or brush should be able to do the trick, right? What type of paint would be suitable to use in conjunction with a roller/brush? What would I need to have on top of the now bare wood? Paint and clear, anything else?
Scott Rosenberger
Just a little something to think about, You're only going to get out of a paint job what you are willing to put in it. That's not to say you can't get a nice finish inexpensively, you're just going to have to put alot of time in sanding and leveling and wet sanding and polishing. Brian
and no matter what kind of way you decide be it gun or spray can the prep work is half the battle so take your time getting it smooth before you start painting.
Guitarfrenzy
Listen to Brian on this one.. wish I would have before my first one.. lol... I just said.. "ah heck, that looks good enough,, the paint will cover it up anyway" WRONG.. It only magnifies it!!!! lol
butnut
A brush and roller? You must be listening to too much Jerky Boys Excellent point Brian...your final finish is only as good as your prep. In case you were'nt kidding, about the roller, I'd use spray paint instead. Guitarfrenzy
actually I haven't noticed him posting much lately... wonder if he's working on some more paint jobs.. ?
butnut
Awesome...although I could'nt see any pics, I don't doubt for a second a killer glass finish can be achieved...like he said, a lot of sanding and buffing...who said you can't polish a turd? I know a guy who spray painted his car...bought a few cases of black lacquer...with enough build to sand with 400,600,800,1200,1500 and 2000, he got a show car glass shine after buffing. So I believe you can roll lacquer...I'm more inconsidrate, I gas my neighbors out...I love the smell of lacquer in the morning! cough...hack In case you guys have'nt heard the Jerky Boys, they make crank calls...Mike the painter was hilarious. Painted his car with a brush and roller...beuuutiful.

Guitarfrenzy
Yeah, you can get one of those rollers at Sherwin-Williams, we use them all the time at work, but I haven't been brave enough to use them on a guitar I'll just wait for the tutorial to come out to try it.. lol In the meantime, I'll just stick to a gravity feed spray gun and Nason Select Clear. G_urr_A
I'm aware that I'm going to spend more time if I do it in a less expensive way, but, well, time is a thing I've got a lot of, as opposed to money.... So, what would I need to go the roller way? 1. Anything under the paint? (Sealer, or anything like that? What is sealer btw? (I don't know the Swedish word, so I need to know what it does to get the right thing)) 2. A roller (anything I should think about?) 3. Some paint. (What types of paint are suitable for a roller?) 4. Some clear. (What types of clear are suitable?) 5. Sanding paper. 6. Lots of time and patience (not a problem). 7. Anything else?
G_urr_A
Anyone?
cr_XD
lol just know to tell you that the sealer is something you apply to wood that has many pores so as the colors no to be absorbed by it. if it´s mapple what you are finishing you shouldn't need it. hope it helps
G_urr_A
Thanks cr_XD! That should help me get hold of some (if I need it that is... does anyone happen to know if Birch needs to be sealed?)
Brian
Couldn't hurt just to be safe and sealer is relitively inexpensive to begin with.
