School Project Guitar - Finished

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Some of you may remember me as I have posted here before regarding this guitar. I was met with some criticism, but that's okay. It was good criticism. Yet still - I ignored most of you hehe :D Mainly due to time - or rather the lack of it. Anyway. I finally finished it. It plays like a DREAM. I can't express how happy I am with it. The set up is awesome (even thought I didn't do much work on that part) and it looks, feels and place like...the sex. It's so nice. I am so happy with it. The ONLY thing I am not happy with is the paint job - but this will be sanded down and redone at a later date as my hand in is tomorrow :D I will be getting a professional to do it for me.

Without further ado - here are ALL of the picture I have taken (in rough order).

Congrats on finishing your project. I'm sure you learned alot even though you did not follow conventional wisdom, plus you'll be ready for the next one. You got it together and it plays well; and thats the primary function of any instrument. Hpoe you get a good grade. Rob.

routing was done using a CNC router :D Not much too it. Draw shapes on computer, put guitar in machine and leave it over night hehe =] Notice the wood filler around the edges of the pockets. This is where it was in the wrong place and I had to stop it and re align it.

dave mustainish like his ltd one. i like the look of it its diffrent did u find it hard to put up the trem?

Getting the mounting pegs in the right place was hard. Made a jig in the end after a few mistakes. What I learnt - Mark the holeso n the CNC router. Its so much easier. lol.

I was quite close to congratulating you but...well, I will anyway. You've done a reasonable job despite ignoring just about every piece of advice that you were given :D If it plays ok & you're happy with it then it's a success no matter what anyone else thinks.

...Now, back to the criticism :D It's not really a criticism as such but a word of caution & something that I wanted to point out. I'm not against CNC'd guitars, I'm not a traditionalist in any sense & I imagine that using the CNC contributed to your final gradings, however...You've shown that technology can't make up for poor workmanship.

It's all very well being cocky if you've got the skills & experience to back it up. So, saying that there's "not much to it" & then explaining that you had to fill the holes & start again because you didn't double check it first goes to show the trouble with trying to run before you can walk.

The first rule of wood work is: measure twice, cut once

What you should have learnt was to draw everything out full scale first, then take time to make jigs. If you'd drawn everything out first you could just mark the hole position & drill in a drill press. Your reliance on gadgets is just over complicating things. The reason why luthiers & amateur builders make guitars the way they do is because it works, it's straight foreward, simple & uncomplicated. Get things sorted at the very beginning & you'll save yourself a lot of time correcting mistakes further down the line. B)

man, i'm gonna come off as a dick, but that thing is ugly... the general idea is good, but you really need to work on your lines, on making things flow well, it looks rushed a bit... if you could smooth up the lines and work on the way it flows, the general idea would go over really well... its alright for a first project, one thing that you could still change is that big overhang on the side of your neck pocket, though itd take reshaping your neck heel a bit... it doesn't look comfortable there...
