Trynyty
The relic job on that Hendrix/Zappa tribute is one of the best I've seen. A finish like that paired with a relic'd neck would be some serious mojo. Great stuff. Quote Link to comment
Stew
Thanks. I was going for the exact replica thing so it does look weird with a newer looking neck and hardware. When I build something "reliced" I think of realistic wear, not a sander. Like my '52 replica. - Stew Quote Link to comment
jmrentis
What is that groove beside the bridge or should I say what does it represent? I'm guess maybe pinky finger or ring finger wear. I know I often have my hand and/or finger against the body. With that type of bridge I could see resting my fingers right up against it. Anyhow, just curious. Very wicked work all around. I remember some of your work from when I first started visiting the board, very impressive work. Look forward to seeing more of your work. Best wishes. J Quote Link to comment
Trynyty
That's a pretty damn convincing lookiing relic. Nice anti-luthier skills. Quote Link to comment
Stew
jmrentis: That's ring/pinking fingernail wear. When you're finger pickin' at the bridge, some players fingers rested right next to the plate. This guitar is actually reliced by viewing about 12 images of real '52 Telecasters. So I got that idea from those. I hate today's Relics with the over the top forearm wear. I believe that a little goes a long way. Some people don't know when to stop the distressing process. Nobody drops their car keys on a guitar body 25 times. You have to use everyday items like jeans rivots, belt buckles, chain bracelets, etc. I've never dropped a guitar on a belt sander. The only reason my Hendrix/Zappa Tribute is so banged up is because that's how the original guitar looks. Mike Eldred, former Fender Custom Shop manager, once warned me about making my own SRV #1 Tribute copies. I get occasional emails asking me to build them a John Mayer '62 black relic Strat. Can't do that anymore. I know too many people at Fender to use a counterfeit logo. I kept the Fender logo on the Hendrix/Zappa Tribute only because I'm not selling that guitar. If I ever sold it, off comes the Fender decal. You all probably noticed my '52 guitar has my own decal and not "Fender". Although I build my own guitars now, I still love an occasional beater project. They just feel like home. '62 Shell Pink Reproduction guitar. I have to decide on what to build for 2008! - Stew Quote Link to comment
jmrentis
Very cool stuff! I agree about some of the over the top wear, I really am not a huge relic person, but I think that is mainly because of over the top ones and the rip offs that occur, however after seeing a few quality relics lately, I can see their appeal and think they're pretty neat. Way back when I was a young angry teen I really liked Green Day a lot and I believe he(Billie Joe) used his first guitar for everything and from all the wear it started falling apart, swelling from sweat and all kinds of issues. Not sure how it ended up looking, but I'm curious now to see what the wear from all those tours looks like up close. Anyhow, great stuff Stew, keep us posted on your plans for 2008, can't wait to see what you got for us. J Edited January 26, 2008 by jmrentis Quote Link to comment
westhemann
When you're finger pickin' at the bridge, some players fingers rested right next to the plate I rest my pinky there while picking on "not super fast" stuff...My first guitar has that same hole in the same spot. I can't figure out if I lived such a fast-paced life that it hyper aged me or if at some point one of my ancestors mated with a dog, not really sure. Narrowed it down to one of those two. I am just starting to see how things can make you seem or feel old. I still remember vividly when I first could buy smokes and booze and now I see those signs at 7-11 or grocery stores that say you must be born before some date and it weirds me out. I know it's still early to feel that, but sometimes I do, I'm just a few weeks shy of 27, so I have plenty of time to feel old, lol. J Edited January 30, 2008 by jmrentis Quote Link to comment

avengers63
I've worked with people born in the 90's.......... How the hell does that work Last June, I finally left the restaurant industry after 20 years. It killed me that I routinely made pop culture references to things I vividly remember... which happened a good 5-8 years BEFORE my employees were born. Talk about feeling old. President Ford falling down the steps of Air Force One. Skits from the 1st cast of Saturday Night Live. Seeing the original Star Wars trilogy in the theaters. The CB radio craze. "Keep on truckin', good buddy!" Dungeons & Dragons = satanism. Pink Floyd: The Wall Ace Fhreely left KISS, then Peter Chris left, then Vinnie Vincent left, then Eric Carr died. Can someone tell me exactly when Blondie became an oldie band and Black Sabbath became socially acceptable? Dude... I'm only 38! When did middle aged become old?!?! Quote Link to comment
westhemann
Black Sabbath became socially acceptable? You think that's bad? When I was in high school(80s) I used to listen to Metallica's Master of puppets and such in the parking lot,and routinely heard from the hicks(how can you listen to that stuff when you can't understand the words?"(I know...it's very legible to normal people),and I and my friends were called "devil worshippers" etc....and now a week does not go by where they don't play Metallica's Master of Puppets on the rock station here in Austin... Guess what? It's considered CLASSIC FREAKIN' ROCK! And yet they still won't play anything by Slayer on the radio...I guess because Slayer never sold out to the "pop tarts" like Metallica... Oh...and I referenced Huey Lewis' "I wanna new drug" at work a few weeks ago...and a 22 year old Ironworker said "who?" Quote Link to comment
avengers63
I get it. I was in HS in the 80's - graduated in '89. I remember Metallica & Anthrax being on the edge. I get a pretty big kick out of what the kids are calling Punk today. I tell them to listen to the Ramones & the Sex Pistols if they want REAL punk. It's all about "three chords & a bad attitude". If the Ramones ever broke the Billboard Top 100, they'd call the album (yes, a vinyl album!) a failure. "If people like us, we're doing it wrong." Punk does NOT get radio play. Now get offa my lawn, you little sunsabiches! Quote Link to comment

Before I started playing (1987), I didn't like thrash. It wasn't until after I learned that it's not the easiest thing in the world to play that i got an appreciation for it. Quote Link to comment

jmrentis
This girl told me the other day "I was listening to this old band...have you heard of Tool?" Was I not supposed to laugh at her? That scares me, I think the oldest stuff they have was 92 or so and heck they just released a new album last year. Not many people I've met even know who that band is for some reason. My local radio station Rock 105.3 had a contest a few years back on best band. And the final two were Metallica and Tool and in the end Metallica won. To be dead honest I was actually surprised Tool made second as they just don't seem all that much publicized compared to some, on that station Metallica songs outnumber Tool songs probably at least 10 to 1 or better. Anyhow, I don't know if I could have even laughed at that girl, I think I might have just been completely dumbfounded. Edited February 1, 2008 by jmrentis Quote Link to comment

Was I not supposed to laugh at her? My mate put a couple of tool albums on last weekend when we were round his house. Awesome drumming, but it all started to get on my tits after a while. I think they're a top band, but I can only really take a couple of songs at a time. Maybe I'm getting old. Quote Link to comment
jmrentis
Yeah Danny Carey their drummer is unreal, truly an amazing drummer. Seeing him play his drumset always amazes me away, even better was during their last tour I think, they did an instrumental that was three songs strung together and they brought out the opener band to help with percussion, which was Messuggah, it was wicked. One of the pages on his site is kinda fun too, its a pic of his main current setup and when you point at the different drums and symbols they make the sound, pretty cool. Its not all that current being the pics says 2002, but close enough I've seen a couple different setups like this, the Lateralus tour I saw he also had a big fat gong on the side that he used for a song or two and some other minor stuff. Danny Careys page Cool guitars Dean, but I must say I would pass up that acoustic just to get those rad blue rollerskates to hit a disco with, lol. ToneMonkey
I once saw a drummer (The Oyster Band) playing a whole song on the scaffolding behind him. Sounded really good, all things considered. Hey look, what's that over there? I think it might be the original topic, shall we all go stand over there to talk? Quote Link to comment
avengers63
Does anyone here remember Black Oak Arkansa , Hot and Nasty.......I had to endure Disco, but I did get some of the best ,too. Black Oak Arkansas, Orleans, J.D. Blackfoot, Dr. Hook... Don't get me going. Listening to it now, disco is pretty fun. At the time, it was on the verge of killing classic rock - like grunge did to hair metal. Now, years later, it's not so bad. Here in the states, we don't get much of England's classic bands - like Budgie or Slade. It's a shame that we're a little cut off from that stuff. The only reason I know about Slade is through Quiet Riot. Can I get any suggested listening from the Brits? Quote Link to comment
