westhemann
NEXT!!! The last one turned out so well I want to do another almost just like it.This time though the bridge is a TOM instead of a Floyd. I am thinking of other differences as well but I need to ponder it all
killemall8
Nice looking neck blank. I like flamed necks that have the curl at an angle like that.
westhemann
Thanks, that is the leftover piece of this neck And because the center stripe is also maple I can really get it thin with no worries

westhemann
Neck started Tried to only take out what i needed where it was needed so there are differing depths and widths
westhemann
These truss rods are interesting. They come prewrapped and the end with the adjustment has a housing around the nut,so it's almost impossible to have glue creep in and foul it up
killemall8
Those look like the ones i have been using for a few years. Where did you get them? If they are, they are GREAT truss rods. I liked that they were completely shrink wrapped and like you mentioned, the housing that the adjusment nut is in. And they are less than half the price of a stew mac one. I buy them in packs of 5 at a time.
westhemann
Yeah that's them.Ebay... You MUST use a volute with them and place it properly because of the insanely huge bell around the nut if you want a thin neck, but since I always do I like them. body planned out

westhemann
I need a tall heel for this type of neck joint,so I did this That's right...it's 3/4" thick solid ebony....comes off a piece large enough to do an entire ebony neck...but I can't make myself turn it into a neck...I can barely make myself cut these small pieces... Maiden69
That is a solid piece of ebony! Are you painting this one?
westhemann
I am still kind of undecided on the finish.I really liked the orange-y amber I got on the last one,but I am also considering just white with the grain showing through... westhemann
Time for my mid-day break. I won't be taking as many pics from here on out.
westhemann
Figured I would show the reason for a volute with two way rods...you can move the volute up and down the neck for preference, but you have to move the rod with it.It all needs to be planned out with thought given to strength.when shaped properly a volute will feel good in first position when chording, even though it may look like it's in the way...it is not in the way...I model these volutes and their positions after my favorite ESP japan model. westhemann
I still need to do some tweaking of this joint..it's a bitch to get right.. I just figure if I want a guitar to be like an LP I should stick with the joint
killemall8
Those joints look like the biggest pain ever. I would never wnat to do it.
westhemann
Ha!...I thought my neck looked strange... I missed the nut width...it is supposed to be 1 5/8" and i made it 1 7/8"...that would have sucked to not catch that before fretting Those joints look like the biggest pain ever. I would never wnat to do it. Yeah i am not sure why they do it that way?Only advantage I can see is that it leaves better joint support on the treble side. I just spent about an hour refining it a bit to create a lip at the bottom to completely hide the joint. I don't think I can fret with the neck off with this joint. The fretboard flexes a bit under pressure at the ledge portion...Of course once it's glued in that won't be an issue. Maiden69
I dnt like tenons... That is the only thing I have never liked about Gibsons. I'm a sucker for their shape, except maybe a few models. I'll be tuned to see how this one turns out.
westhemann
Not sure if I like it either, but if it works well and sounds good I may stick with it...I'll just find an easier way to do it
Maiden69
I think that the main reason I don't like it is that to me it's so simple to adjust the neck angle and height with a full size neck than playing around and making all the measurements for the tenon. I got nothing against the sound of (propertly set) Gibson necks.
westhemann
Figuring out a top carve is so difficult i think...it's all about art and symmetry...two things I am not great at The girl on the wall is judging me...she never says anything, she just stares right through me
whalehazard
looking good...I love the neck. I've got some maple I want to do this with...where are you getting the black stringers? Is that dyed veneer or ebony?

And it was on the 2nd and last guitar i ever did with SS fretwire. I had to use a dremel.
WezV
I just figure if I want a guitar to be like an LP I should stick with the joint juniors usually have full width tenons - gibson did it as a cost cutting measure but i actually think its one of their best features, i think you can even hear/feel the extra resonance when playing a decent junior gibson left a extra bit of support in the cutaway which never looks great on more modern versions- but its not really needed anyway
