penguin
i cant get the knobs off my samick p-bass. just started playing in july.
jbkim
Are there set screws on the knobs? If so, loosen them before trying to remove the knobs. If not, you can try wrapping the knob with a cloth or paper towel and gently try to remove it with some pliers. Be very careful not to damage the knob (or anything else!) penguin
dont know what you mean by "a set of screws". but there is a thing where you plug in a the chord to the bass.that thing that unscrews.is has one of those under each knob. dont know if that helps. He's talking about set-screws. I'm not sure if I can describe them properly, but they're tiny screws that tighten the knob down to the shaft of the potentiometer. penguin
i think i know what you are talking about. its kind of like a nut that you just unscrew.
jbkim
i think i know what you are talking about. its kind of like a nut that you just unscrew. Are you talking about removing the knobs or the pots? There'd be no nut for removing any knobs but you'll need to loosen a nut to remove the potentiometer. penguin
Not the positioner. The knobs. I have no idea what a "pot" is. Im not too tech with this stuff.
jbkim
not the positioner. the knobs. What's a positioner? Take a look at this (the picture showing a set screw especially.) Do you see the set screw on your knobs? Do your knobs look like any of those on that page? I wonder if there is anything different with your knobs that it's difficult to remove them. If they're just plain old knobs without a set screw, you should just be able to remove them using the method I described in my first response. penguin
Are they even suposed to come off? I messed up on the positioner thing. I though you said positioner instead of potentiometer.
jbkim
Um, ok... I think you're confusing some terms. Look here for pictures of knobs... and here for pictures of pots (or potentiometers.) Which part are you having problems removing?

Reaper
Quick question: are the knobs metal or plastic?
Scott Rosenberger
look on the side of the knob. is there a slotted screw? you need to loosen it before the know will come off. if that doesnt work use a really heavy pick under the knob and lift gently
penguin
What do you guys mean by gently? The knobs are metal.
Scott Rosenberger
the knobs are metal. look on the side of them all the way around the knob. I'll bet there is a slotted screw holding the knob on

Curtis P
yes, very carefuly with force, just think of it as an egg stuck in a rubber cup or something, pull hard enough to get out, but carefully enough not to break it!!
Ace
yes, very carefuly with force, just think of it as an egg stuck in a rubber cup or something, pull hard enough to get out, but carefully enough not to break it!! Do we have an "explanation of the month" award? If so, I nominate Curtis for the egg stuck in a rubber cup. if you can get between the knob and the body, try using a lever of some sort from two sides at once to lift it equally. Use a protective underlay so you don't scratch the finish around the knobs. so long ace
rob
getta bit of string wraped round the bottom of it and applie upward pressure
jbkim
You put your right knob in. You put your right knob out. You put your right knob in and you shake it all about. You do the hokie pokie and turn your knob around. That's what it's all about! Sorry, couldn't resist .
