Codec Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I heard about someone making a solid electric out of poplar. Is that an okay wood to make one out of? It's really light and soft. Quote
krazyderek Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 i've used it... it's harder then basswood, and almost as light, i think fender used it in some of their lower models Quote
Scott Rosenberger Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Alot of the Jackson Neck Thru Guitars from the 80's + 90's used poplar for the "wings". I've never heard or played a Jackson neck Thru that I liked the Tone of but that's just me Poplar is a fine wood to make guitars out of if it's what's available. I prefer Alder which can be had for approx. the same $$$ Quote
Codec Posted June 9, 2004 Author Report Posted June 9, 2004 Is alder heavier and prettier? Why would you choose that over poplar Quote
Biohazard Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Poplar gives a trebly sound doesn't it? I considered it for my guitar to be made out of, but with sticking sheet aluminium to mine, I thought id get too many trebles. I don't know. I know nothing when it comes to woods. Quote

bigdguitars Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 poplar sucks. Its a fast growing wood that does not sound to great... I would go with Alder much better wood. or even basswood which is a personal favorite. Gibson and Fender have used poplar, but those guitar sound like crap. Poplar is a little bassy with no punch to it. Basswood has that missing punch. Alder has more of a trebbly feel than the other two. Poplar is easier to work with than alder and basswood. if you have the right tools it really doesn't matter.... Quote
westhemann Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 What tone exactly does it give? to me alder sounds like it has ALL of the desired frequencies...then it is up to you and your eq to take it from there...i think of it like a blank slate starting point...it has the potrential for ANY type of music you want...you just need to take out or boost the frequencies that you need or don't need for what you are playing with it... in my opinion, alder and maple is the most versatile wood combination i have heard Quote

Tyme, spearmint, salt, pepper, oregano, chile powder, that's all wood is, a spice. When mixed properly, almost any decent wood can be used. You just have to be an experienced chef to know what to mix with what. Not everyone likes Mexican food, not everyone likes Asian food. But that doesn't mean it sucks, just that you don't personally care for it, or don't know how to 'cook' with it. Poplar is a fine wood to build guitars with, I've used it several times, and am using it right now AAMOF on several projects. Quote
