HetMasteen
My Dad's getting me a Gibson LP Standard in August in Canada. I live in Israel and my dads flying back from Vancouver via London . He was planing on taking it as a carry on (soft case packed with styrofoam and whatnot) but the airline told him he may not be allowed. My question is: if he buys a hardshell case and stuffes it with clothes\packing material, will it be safe (or relatively safe) to put it in the cargo hold? does anyone have experiance with this? BTW- i'ts insured, so if something happens to it- airline pays up... but i'd rather just get it in one piece, if you know what i mean
Biohazard
If you put it in a hard case, shove lots of protective material in the case with the guitar. Then tell the airline its fragile and stick a load of 'fragile' stickers over the case, then it should be ok.
MisterNoisy
I'd also make sure that the insurance covers theft. I've seen a number of posts on other forums where an instrument case arrived at the baggage claim unscathed, but empty.
HetMasteen
i guess i can buy one with a lock (some of the cases ive seen come with combination locks)
Primal
They also sell flight cases for guitars. Some you can get for a pretty decent price.
Gregory
As far as a lock... depending which airline you fly with, all the post twin tower attack security might forbid locks. (at least I know a few do.)
Gobbo
its a matter of national security to make your personal possessions unsecure.
jefm
If you lock it they break the locks.... carry on may work....he could buy an extra seat for it.... but a hardshell case should be good....For fun you could put a piece of tape across the joint to see if it's been opened.... I always tie something bright to my luggage because it all looks the same....I hate thinking of someone punking my luggage
lovekraft
DHL - it'll get home before he does!
iskim86
i always put my neck-through guitar in the cargo and I have an ESP LTD hard case. no damage so far... the case might get some cuts but that's it! I've always put fragile stickers all over the case. I go on Korean Air. but then again, it might just be my guitar because it has survived a 180 degrees flip before... AND there was a metal bar that hit mid air while it was doing a sommersault...
HetMasteen
the problem with DHL is- CUSTOMS!!! they suck! im giving him a bunch of hebrew stickers to put on the case so he can tell customs he left the country with it... if they charge you in customs you hav to pay nearly 100%!!! (including tax, customs and fine) that would suck so bad...
Maher
The Gibson Les Paul STDs come with hard cases anyway? i think if you padded it well it would be fine in the supplied hard case but watch out for thevies
YeahRoon
Just as important: tune it way the heck down! Down as in the strings just hanging there... You want as little tension on the neck as possible. The cargo hold is not half as comfortable as the cabin! Tune your guitar down... way way way down or you might have some neck adjustment problems to deal with as it arrives.
HetMasteen
i thought about that... thanx actually my biggest fear is not the guitar getting destroyed (insured) its getting it back with just a little cracking on the flamed top man that would SUCK!!!!!!!
