  1. Looks amazing scott. Wish i could get a finish to look like that. wipe them down with a tack cloth first, for not lint.
  2. I had to sand all the epoxy off, because i sanded through in one spot, and it looked insanely blotchy and mis matched color there. Yes, it shrinks back to looking like a different kind of orange peel.
  3. That is the thing, redwood doesnt even have grain for it to shrink into.
  4. Thanks guys. Although it looked pretty great in the pictures when i took them, it already shrunk back and looks terrible. I knew it would, it never lasts. 8 years of making guitars and working with finishes, and still, no matter what i do, what finish i use, how long i let it cure, it ALWAYS shrinks back.
  5. Great recovery so far scott. What nut files are those?\
  6. Scott, What i mean is, if you look at a certain angle you can see it. You dont have to inspect it. Anybody can see it. Otherwise it looks ok.. for now. Until the finish shrinks back like it always does, no matter how long i let it dry.
  7. It is strange, like i said, these are 2 completely different finishes, 2 different guitars, different woods. i have used one of those finishes for over 6 years, and never had anything like this happen. I got it to come out decent. but if you look at it just right, you can still see the blems.
  8. I dont know how to explain it. I has 3 coats of sealer on it and 3 coats of poly clear on it. There are 2 spots where it just has a weird texture and it gums up sandpaper and rolls off, like it was sprayed onto something incompatible. But it doesnt make sense, it wasnt there when i sprayed sealer, or after is sprayed the clear. Only happened once i sanded it. And i didnt even come close to sanding through, there is still plenty of finish there.
  9. Been working on guitars non stop for hours each day. and still i have gotten nowhere. I dont know how that works. It gets really frustrating. Since i had problems with 3 out of 4 guitars, i have been trying to get the finishes right on 2 of them. Isnt going to well. I got the redwood burl pretty much perfect, and sprayed the top one last time. Sprayed really great, and i started wet sanding it. I am still getting these strange areas that have a weird reaction. I have never seen it in my life, and i got it on 2 different guitars with 2 different finishes. So this one is just going to sit there forever. I cant get it to work.
  10. look at this first picture i posted. Bloodwood looks almost the exact same, just a bit less orange.
  11. Man, that is a ton of ebony! I have been buying a lot of stuff in bulk lately. Its tough when you dont end up selling anything. For once i have spent a lot more than i have made this year.
  12. Thanks guys. Its cool when a guitar comes out just like you picture it in your head! Bob, Again, it ends up looking blue in the pictures without sunlight directly on it. The paduak fretboard is pretty much the same exact color as bloodwood, except bloodwood can be a little more pale sometimes.
  13. Haha, i indeed to get that quite often. My dad does a great job of taking care of it. It wont be green for much longer though.
  14. Looks like it came out pretty awesome... for a strat Must be pretty dang heavy if its northern ash.
  15. You have to use mixing cups made for mixing paint... You can get them anywhere you buy your paint. They are solvent proof.
  16. I cant live without my planer or my drum sander. Unless you get your wood stock within 1/8" of your desired thickness, a drum sander alone wont really cut it. I have used a craftsman 14" 1hp bandsaw for the past 2 years. It has been more than enough. I do wish it had more than 8" resaw capacity though. But i have cut 8" thick wenge no problem on it. an 8" jointer really isnt necessary, unless you feel like jointing every single body half before you glue them together. I only use mine for jointing edges.
  17. Thanks guys. Bob, It isnt fading at all. It looks blue because i took the pictures after the sun was off the grass, in full shadow. So the color is a bit deceiving.
  18. Got it pretty much finished up today. Man... I think this is my favorite guitar I have ever made. It is just so beasty. And sounds absolutely amazing. The color in the pics is a little off because the sun was already setting. Picture it the color of the last pics i posted, but finished
  19. I completely agree. Every 2k clear i have used was completely different. 1 i used had the most amazing spraying qualities, and the best gloss ever. But it never dried fully hard. I tried a different brand, it dried hard and fast, even in the garage in mid winter. But it was really hard to work with.
  20. That is why your experiences are different... because you are using heat lamps... Without them it doenst dry like that naturally. I have mixed it exactly and sprayed it exactly as directions say... and it never dried on wood sealer. But dried fine on paint. Speaking from personal experience, not opinion... And obviously depends on brand and quality... lower qualites are just not the same, as i have found.
