  1. Buying a new guitar and parting it out wont get you any profit (usually). Parting out used guitars however does seem to be fairly profitable. I just sold a MIM Strat in parts and got more for the lot than I paid new almost 3 years ago with more wear.
  2. Particle board and MDF are not the same. In all honesty, if you are happy with the template I would consider copying it over to either MDF of PLY (w/ a template bit). I put particle board at the bottom of the list as far as template materials go. I wouldnt worry about sealing anything. I sprayed a few particle board templates I had w/ laquer of some sort. Didnt make any difference IMO. Particle board isnt very durable at the edges.
  3. No offense, but that "mockup" shows nothing. That could be anything. Grey knobs and white pickups and bridge are all I get from that.
  4. Litch, I personally have no problem with you coming back here, but maybe you should start a thread and address the little issue we are all talking about before you start bad mouthing anyone. Back to the explorer..........
  5. A title that at least gives us some idea of what you are asking would be appreciated. I have never used that stuff.
  6. Granted, the fact that D did buy a template from Kirn in the past could hurt him slightly, but I never bought one from him so that gives him no right to cancel my auction. Likewise, he has no right to cancel anyone elses auctions either. D, it has been said before, you can't keep going the Jr. Highschool route and ask that he be banned just because you have a gripe with him. I agree with you 100% on the issue but calling him out in your auctions (which is a bad idea, regardless of what I thought previously) and then complaining to the website guy just makes you look stupid. Like Dark said a while back, if you really want to take him down, you have to go the legal rout and stop the name calling and childish complaining.
  7. Nope! WOAH, did the end of that thread recently dissapear!? I cant find any of D's or Mattia's posts.
  8. I really didnt want to clutter up the surface of the table with any miter guages or t-tracks. You'll notice that there is no insert plate and the fence isnt attached to tracks. I wanted as few obstructions as possible on there. I have no doubt that I could come up with some sweet jigs, but until I really find one I need, Im gonna leave it as is. Right nor it works really well for template routing neck profiles, body shapes and doing the roundover on a body. Thats really all I use it for. It looks like Grim got the Bosch router, which I think is a good all purpose router. I wouldnt feel comfortable myself using a 3hp beast that wasnt in a table. I think the Bosch will be good for him as it has enough power to be used in a table but isnt so huge that you cant hand-rout stuff.
  9. Please do, I am always finding old planes at the flea market but Im leary of buying them cause' I have no idea what im really looking at and if Im getting a deal or getting screwed.
  10. 2" is my suggestion. Generally, PRS guitars are about 2" in the center with the carve coming done about 1/2" to leave a side thickness of about 1.5". Again, I would get some more opinions on the ash/maple combo as far as how it will sound before you do anything. I dont know, but I have a feeling it wont be a good combo. I would go for the mahogany and just hollow it out if you are worried about weight. Then you have an ash blank for another project.
  11. I've heard of people using aluminum tape on a bearing bit (making sure not to overlap the edges) to make a bearing a bit larger. Might work, but who knows. I would just make your own.
  12. Sucks for all the guys w/ singlecuts thinking they had a unique investment. Either way, Im glad they ruled in favor of PRS, I mean really...
  13. I think 2" total is more reasonable. I would leave the maple where it is and take the ash down to 1.25". On another note, I havent seen too many ash backed, maple topped guitars. I am not sure what type of sound to expect from that combo.
  14. Hmmm, good to know. You CAN make your own template. A neck pocket template isnt too hard to do.
  15. I just got a craftsman dremel on ebay for $25 Shipped. I built my router table for about $30. The Bosch 1617 (very good way to spend the $$) can be found on amazon.com, reconditioned and w/ both bases for $140. Dont buy a bit set, just buy the bits you need. Buy good ones (I prefer whiteside bits from routerbits.com). You dont need $50 digital calipers either. I have a pair of cheap calipers that work perfectly well for what I need. You can also build a dremel base for much less than $50. The question here is whether or not you value the time spent building these things and looking for deals more than the extra $$$ you will spend just buying everything?
  16. I know Drak uses the stewmac template and Warmoth necks. As **** as he is about perfection, I imagine they work very well together.
  17. I was gonna say, where does Drak fit in here?
  18. Thats the thing, he has no more pull than anyone else could have. Big D is right, the VERO program is a huge flaw in the company and its unregulation opens it up to abuse, as in this case. D, a bit of advice here. Simply bashing Kirn anywhere you can will get you no where. If anything, you are gonna piss him off more. You really need to explore legal routes here if you are serious about taking him down. Hav a lawyer send a letter to both him AND ebay regarding your account suspension (although, you did call him out in an auction, which may have screwed you up). Also, contact the guy from guitarbuildingtemplates.com and see what he has to say about this, I bet you he has dealt with this guy too. Dont just go around slining mud, it isnt going to help your case at all. P.S- I did (it isnt gonna hurt me to rip on him )post a reply to that thread as I have had a similar experience as Ive said. I doubt he will respond but who knows. Again, keep us in the loop on your progress.
  19. Man, I wish I could say that I have. Its really just a body hanging around at the moment. Im trying to finish up my first project at the moment (a tele). I have learned a ton more since I first conceived this project. I 'may' plane the body down a bit, hollow it out and then cap it with maple. I'm not sure though yet. I decided not to start this until I really finish the tele. Anyway, here are my specs as it stands now; Mahogany Body maple bolt on neck w/ scarf jointed headstock rosewood fingerboard w/ pearl block inlays 25.5" scale P90 pickups tune-o-matic bridge string through body I dont really know what I want to do control wise. Despite the obvious awkwardness of the typical control setop on the Airline, I like the look and I will probably keep it. Well see what happens. I really need to sit back down and hammer out all these little details, but that will come when I start to work on it again. Should be fun!
  20. Man, that table was quick and easy. It's a 3/4" piece of melamie topped particle board ($10) sandwiched to a piece of 3/4" MDF ($8). I built a frame from some 3/4" pine and then just slapped some legs from an old table on it. Really an easy project and I use it all the time.
  21. NICE!!! You will really like the Bosch. Hell, for $140 I might pick up another.
  22. You know what? Those templates are all from the guy at guitarbuildingtemplates.com. I bet you he has had to deal with this crap before. The thing is, that is his business so I imagine he at least threatened the legal rout. The thing is, he never has tele or strat templates up on ebay. THose are the two that Kirn sells, So I dont know. It might be worth contacting him just to see what the deal is.
  23. Slow down man. I specifically said that I was trying not to be insensitive here. I was specifically referring to your response made only a few hours after the original post. You came off (to me anyways) as being in a hurry, and as you know, these things take time. Dont play that card with me.
  24. Again, that page has about 10 DIFFERENT things going on. Do you want to build a guitar? You're not being clear at all. You are NOT going to be able to use a Fender style neck and just cut it. You are going to need to build a neck (which I dont is your intention) or, order a custom neck. I would just go the Saga kit route.
