  1. The biggest difference is the acoustic amp will have a horn. Distortion sounds bad through a horn usually. Also hopefully the eq will be better designed for acoustic.
  2. The Dano pedals have thier very own... vibe, cool factor etc... I have a few that I've picked up at pawn shops etc. I always buy them if i can get them for $15 or under. The biggest issue is the switch sucks. I know a few places where people like the pedals but just rebox them and change the switch. your mileage may vary.
  3. 12au7's and 12at7s have lower gain than 12ax7's. Often becasue they are direct swapped they are used to change an amp or pedals gain structure.
  4. Id also look at the Ampeg reissues. I love my 12r tr. I think they are calling them the diamond blue series this week.
  5. 1. Turn Down... 2. Noise gates are for eliminating hum and background noise. Wont do a thing for feedback. They basicaly turn off sound below whatever db level you selelct. 3. An Eq pedal may help you notch out the offending frequencys. However if the tone you are liking is because you are just cranking the amp and the tone controls nothing will help. I reherese and gig with different amps because of the volume limitations I need to reherse.
  6. To your tube questions... 1. Power Tube types make a huge difference. I have learned that I prefer El84's in all my amps. Its part of loving low wattage amps too though. A little google searching or lookin on the gear page will give you better info than I can provide. Also Gerald Webers or Aspen Pittmans books on amps are good sources. Not only does each tube type differ but the ratings, manufacter, age, etc.. all figure in. There is a lot of boutique cork sniffing voodo involved here too. Your best bet is to try a few amps with el84's, el34's, 6l6/5881 and if you can find em 6v6's. Many amps can swap easily between el34 and 6l6 tubes, my Mesa Nomad has a switch for this... 2. Preamp tubes. More equals more gain... mostly. Sometimes different channels will use only certain tubes or add them together from channel 1 & 2. My Mesa Nomad uses progressivly more tubes from channel to channel. My Soldano Hot Rod 50 bypasses the first tube for the low gain channel. Also if there is a tube buffered effects loop it will use a tube, like my Soldano Hot Rod 50. Again the number, type and manufacturer have implications here as well. For instance I put a 12at7 in the first position of my Soldano these days to lower its gain and smooth it out. Also a lot of voodoo involved here. The most important thing to use here is some trial and error and your ears. Where are you located maybe the members here can point you to some good shops. I find that in this arena the experince of the amp repair guy and the owner of Cowtown guitars make it worth not mail ordering. YMMV
  7. Let me find out if i have a buyer lined up on the rest of the RG first. I have somone interested on another board.

Just dont like gold. $30 plus shiping Blue Steele Acoustic Strings 13-56 7 Sets $40 plus shiping Alesis Sr-16 drum machine. No power supply broken screen. The sounds still worked the last I tried it and the midi functions worked. $15 plus shipping obo EH Small Stone Phaser- Really clean got it used and cant seem to fit in the board $40 Fishman GII preamp. Have bags gig pro and para di. Save a ton on instalation of a new pickup and dont have to cut a hole in the side of your guitar. It sounds great I just dont need it. $40 Stageworks wireless mike. Got it free with a sam ash purchase. Its okay... just sat unused for quite awhile. $40 Heathkit power supplys: power supply pics 2 sp-17's Power up and look fine. One had broken tubes, I replaced them with some used mesa's. Using the onboard meters they seem to function fine. Don't know enough to say they are good or not. Should be easy fixes if there are problems. They sell for about $100 on ebay. Shipping will be based on 18lb weight. Definitley as is units. They have 6l6gc tubes, 1 has used mesa's the other has RCA's. They are high voltage ac supplys. They read 400v on the internal meters. One reads 75v and the other 40v on my meter, don't know if they need a load to read right externally or what? 1 Low Voltage dc- It reads fine on my meter and matches the internal display. Still as is still $100 still 18lbs. No pics yet. Desert Yellow Ibanez RG that Im going part out probably. Let me know what you might want I'm most attached to the neck.
  9. What other gear do you have? What do you want? How much do you want to have to drag around? Hit some stores and try a variety of things out. Time and a lot of money have told me for me its either a tube combo or small tube head and 2x12. Always 50 watts or under. These days it hovers between 5 and 18 watts. I also have found that while chanel switching is nice I prefer a solid clean amp that I can then use a vareity of boost and drive pedals to change tones on. Its hard to go wrong with a small tube combo. Look at the Ampeg Jet series really undervalued great amps. Also the Mesa Studio 22 and Subway series. The little 18 watt Ampeg Jet 12tr is killer and if your band has any dynamics usually will work well on its own. (18 watts is really like 70 or 80% of the volume of a 50 watt which is 90% of the volume of a 100 watts, i forget the exact math) 18 watts on a tube amp is a lot louder than your solid state because of the distortion curves on transistors, also they are often rated optomistically.(if lightning strikes this amp it will peak at 25 watts before catching fire and exploding) It maybe that I'm too old because too loud really bugs me anymore. The more I read about hearing loss and other peoples chalenges with it the more I love a small amp that drives everyones volume down. YMMV
  10. Id be intersted pics of the parker style kits.
  11. Having worked credit card customer service there's a system error somewhere. It may not be them or your bank but their bank. Try to get them and your credit card company on the phone at the same time to check spelling etc... Or have them call your bank for address confirmation rather than running through the electronic system.
  12. +1 on the not wanting a MAC. When I was shopping for my newest laptop, I went into the apple store to talk with them about what I'd need. I could meet my demands by buying a system that was well over 2.5x the price of the laptop I ended up buying. Thats a lot of cash to spend on mics, ram, hard drive space, and cap'n morgan.
  13. I understand. I went into the one in Plano, TX a while back and they had a high dollar Breedlove where the neck was bowed so bad the bass strings were flapping. The guy walks in and says "have you played that breedlove yet?" and I just laughed. GBT ← As an owner of a Breedlove custom shop flamed maple jumbo, you almost make me cry.
  14. For gaming and audio get a laptop with dedicated video memory or lots o' ram. Depends on the games you like though, FPS games arent going to be the greatest on any laptop. I did a bit of research and for the money landed on a HP Zd8205us. 128mb of ram dedicated to video. So it plays World of Warcraft and other games well. The downside, sort of, on mine is the 17" widescreen means it weighs 12lbs. As far as drive space I run exeternal firewire drive out of the back of my firepod for recording.
  15. Guitar Center does nothing to set up or rarely even tune a guitar. Go back and play some of these guitars in a shop that cares about someting other than taking your money I'll bet its different. Honestly ship a guitar to thier warehouse and then to the store and hope it retains a good setup? Sorry, Its a pet peeve. Everytime I go in thier accoustic room I feel like asking for arrows so I can target shoot. Maybe its just the Nevada stores.
  16. +1 on the Parker love. My nightfly sa is the only electric I keep purely because its such a player. Im quite attached to it now as well. Great stock pickups, great playing, great looking.
  17. Im interesteed in the strat neck, how much shipped to 89117
  18. Oil finished or unfinished guitars always seem more resonant to me. Look at the BSB tutorial, little to no finish. I have to say that guitar is holding up well after several years of giging and practice with my old band. Its a season to taste issue. Also depends on how hard you are on guitar finishes.
  19. That is my thought on the few I have played and heard. Ive seen Ed Roland from Collective Soul use one live and on tv both were the worst examples of Piezo pickups I've ever heard. Honestly the acoustic bridge on my Nightfly sounds hundreds of times better.
  20. The best thing you can do IMHO is get ahold of the Walmart kit and set it up before he gets it. I think poorly set up guitars are the biggest discouragment for many new players. I also agree with the post above mine, but I'd wait a bit on the set up lessons.
  21. The problem with a smokey for me was a: 1. Tone- Its just not that fun listening to a buzzing speaker for long, plus i miss effects and such 2. Volume-When I travel for work its long odd hours, not sure I want to be kicked from the Hilton for jamming at 2am. Why I went black box: 1. Recording interface. I can play with recording toys, loops, drums etc 2. Headphones 3. Drum machine built in. Not the best but it is better than always going solo. 4. Unique effects. I really like the filter and some of the other effects so I have options for using this thing outside of travel.
  22. I bought a M-Audio Black Box and Steinberger. Id highly recomend the black box.
  23. Epiphone Valve Jr. Super modable and $110. With my ts-9 upfront its way cool and its cool on its own. Before you dismiss this these are the other amps i own: Soldano Hot Rod 50 Mesa Nomad 55 1x12 Carvin x-60b Mesa Studio 22+ Danelectro Viscount 30(very old dano) Mesa wide body 1x12 cab 65 fender 2x12 cab I do have to say the Valve Junior hooked up to either of my cabs is cooler than its 8" speaker but its cool on its own. I now plan to research and execute some of the mods you can find on a google search.
  24. I used a band saw for the pickguard on my aluminum tele. It required going slow and being patient but worked nicely. I did do a bit of hand sanding to clean the edges.
