  1. Aircraft quality ply/laminate can be used. You can get it thru Aircraft Spruce amongst other sources.
  2. I've seen some unusual custom builds used by people such as Chris Squire of Yes. He even has one with 3 necks! They were designed differently than the usual 2 neck units. one neck was normal, the other came out of the body at a 20 degree ?? angle.
  3. My $.35: ES-335's are made out of ply. But for your bass, I agree with the others. Just go to your local home center and pick up some maple for the wings. It'll be much better in the long run and you'll like to play it more on your gigs! You do need at least something decent to play on. The other route is good too: get a squier or other cheap bass do an upgrade or 2 and use that!
  4. Motherbuckers from Mighty Mite are an inexpensive, yet quality pickup which adapts well for metal.
  5. Maybe we should direct a member to a prior post or do a search first?
  6. I still think you should put on your posts "the artist formally know as" ( you could use clown, instead, if you wish )
  7. Damn! I think I'm gonna think twice before I post anything else. You guys are tough!
  8. Could be a number of things. Have you checked the neck for adjustment? (sometimes its the weather) Are the tuners slipping? I'm sure you're winding the strings right as you have been using it for 10 years. Do the frets need dressing? How about the springs and adjustment on the trem/bridge? If the springs are too weak and/or the screws holding the bridge down a bit too loose or the trem is set too high, that can cause problems. I'm sure the more experienced members can give you a lot more tips. Good luck with it.
  9. I think the #s are skewed!! The average is is somewhere around 78!! Oops! wrong forum that's the flying club.
  10. Ya know, the Grizzly saws look pretty attractive. Hmmmm.
  11. I'm not sure skate bearings are the way to go. A bandsaw runs at a higher rpm than skates. 2 large size router bearings may be more suitable. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out; just be careful if they start to go. Always wear a face shield! Nice tutorial though!
  12. Yes, he got many many emails over it. He still does and as I mentioned gets lots of requests to republish, yet won't do it. I may have figured out a way to acquire a copy a lot cheaper. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the links, I've looked at many and am designing my own winder. They're pretty simple and I've counters along with magnetic switches to go with it. Just need some uninterruped time to do it! If the book is mostly about the winder then I really don't need it. I do have a copy of Erno Zwaan's book : Animal Magnetism. The first half of which is about building pickups and the second half about building a bass. It's pretty good. Also the Kisekae site has alot of formulas for many mainstream pickups.
  13. Sorry to hear that. I put Rotomatics on my LP and they seem quite good.
  14. I've noticed a frenzy on ebay with Jason Lollar's pickup winding book. People are now stupid enough to pay $200 for it now. It was about $85 -$90 a few months ago. I can't believe so many people are selling it. I wonder if a few are bogus copies. I noticed one seller listing the book twice. On another git site, Jason was certainly concerned about copyright infringement by a guy who was selling cd copies, yet he's still unwilling to republish the book!! He cited that he would get a flood of emails when it was published and would take him a year for the emails to slow down to a trickle. He also gets a lot of emails as to whether he'll republish or not. I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $200 for it. It can't be worth that much. With my luck, I'd buy it to get what info I needed, put it back on ebay to recoup my investment and the market will have died!
  15. I like Grovers or Schallers. Get the ones with the string lock.
  16. I got one too. I set on spam, so I'll see if it effects the legit ones. Did you guys know that a sure fire real method of male anatomy enhancement is now available?? Agreed, this is a pretty crappy way to get your message across, I think Southpa has the right idea. Does someone who does this really think there are people gullible enough to buy they're crap? Then again, there are plenty of them out there; ask the guy who helped the Nigerians with their investments!
  17. International Violin (I think in Va. or Md.) has a great catalog with some nice kits and specialized tools.
  18. Great suggestion; I was about to suggest it may be a variation of a Tele custom. Again, the Brosnac is great to have around.
  19. Thanks, but I'm holding out for a 14" so I can put a riser block on for resawing. They usually have 1 horsepower. There was a guy in Wantagh selling one, but it was a Reliant. The company went out of biz and parts are hard to get. I'm on another webside for woodworkers and check its ads. But you've got to be fast - I already lost out on a couple of nice ones. I just think "why should I pay $200 more for a new one when most used saws in very good to excellant shape sell for about $400"?
  20. I'm REALLY PISSED!!!! The jerk whom was to sell me the saw sold it yesterday! I offered him a deposit and he wouldn't take it, I worked around his schedule to take the 2.5 hr. trip to him this coming weekend and the &@#*^@& sold it!! You think he would've told the guy: "if the other guy doesn't show or want to pay full price, you're next in line??? BUT NOOOOOOOO! He had to be an dishonorable jerk!! OK, I feel better now. The search for another continues.....
  21. My recent readings into the area say the difference is so minimal, any bone material will work as well as any other promoted material; it's all in the advertising.
  22. I think as the site says, you're going to need to take the neck off and check on how bad the crack is and why it happened. Perhaps it may only need a thin application of a fast drying epoxy in the crack. As it appears its more than the paint you need to figure out what stress its under that caused the crack or it may happen again after the repair. Good luck with it.
  23. I'm REALLY PISSED!!!! The jerk whom was to sell me the saw sold it yesterday! Have to send this to the Jet bandsaw thread!! OK, I feel better now.
