  1. I think it would be difficult to mask a finish from a chemical stripper and have any real control. Sandpaper is the way I would go. Please note that others here have a lot more experaince so if they so different believe them.
  2. As the photo clearly shows it is only for cleaning brains.

  4. Have you checked your cord?
  5. I have to thank all of you for this. I am gearing up for my first guitar. To date I have done repairs and modifications but never an entire guitar. I am sure I will make many of the same mistakes but hopefully not all of them on the same guitar. When I do make them I will feel just a bit less stupid knowing that people whos work I admire have made the same mistakes.
  6. That looks like a great start on a nice guitar.
  7. I have worked in the hazardous waste cleanup business for over twenty years, including as a safety instrutor. While you do have the correct filters/catridges, IF YOU HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS YOU SHOULD NOT USE A RESPIRATOR WITHOUT AN OK FROM YOUR DOCTOR FIRST. Sorry about shouting but respirators make it harder to breathe and can trigger athsma attacks and even heart attacks. If you have had bypass surgery I doubt that it is safe for you to use a respirator. Check with your doctor. You can always use oil finishes or get someone else to do your finishes for you. BTW Full face do not provide greater protection to you lungs. They just integrate eye protection into the same unit.
  8. Ok with that I think you should know why I voted for you. 1) I like that you are using found materials. It gives so many possibilites and chalanges that you would not face if you were using fresh wood. 2) You made great use of the carve. I like that it is on the back and thus there but, literaly, not in your face. 3) Related to the first point, the way you met the chalange of the control cavity is great. 4) I just like explorers That said it was hard not voting for any of the others.
  9. If it is for yourself, why not a stylized "J" for John?
  10. If you are looking for ideas Dover Publications has several books of stencil designs. I looked at the Art Nouveau one (here is a link) http://store.doverpublications.com/0486234436.html and there were some potential ones in there. I imagine the Native Indain, plants and flower ones could give ideas as well as the start for templates.
  11. As a fan of the Electra/Westone line of guitars and basses I have not lost faith in you build. I just have not had anything to add. I have a Westone bass neck that I intend to start my efforts at building with. Go for it. BTW what is wrong with the paint job and where were you in the 80"s
  12. Thanks to both of you. Wez you may be on the right track. I leave that guitar at our country place so it can get left unplayed for weeks.
  13. I have an Electra Workingman (hense my moniker). It has a standard two humbucker with 2T, 2V and a three way switch. The bridge pup cuts out fairly frequently when switching and sometimes when playing. I have replaced the switch and reflowed the solder on all the pionts but it still happens. The other day while I was adjusting the volume pot it momentarly cut out (usualy when it cuts out it stays cut out for a while). It is possible I have a bad pot? If so how would I test it or should I just replace it? Many thanks in advance.
  14. Thanks, I e-mailed them and five minutes later I had a response. Great customer service.
  15. Love the Deco theme. There was a lot of cross over from Deco to early comics so you are just going back to the roots. Are you going to go with deco tuners on it too?
  16. I am in New York City. I think you publisher should have a word with those online retailers as I would have prefered a new copy. Don't worry about the sale though it is a geat book and I plan on buying my brother a copy for his birthday. Thanks for all the effort that went into making a such an informative and well written book.
  17. Pelican also makes appropriate sizes of flight type cases. I have used there cases for years to protect field instruments. They hold up to just about anything.
  18. I have never don this myself though I have bass with inserts and like it. Here is link on doing the job and the picture at the bottom shows the inserts. http://www.philtone.com/inserts.html
  19. I think there would be a few advantages to going with the inserts over gluing. 1) You have already had this neck on a few guitars so you could move it again. 2) It would be easier to modify the neck to body fit if required (e.g., shimming it). Also, I am not sure how mutch your glueing this one would give you the experiance of a set neck. Set necks are constructed diffently and also typicaly give you better upper fret access. This is not to say it would not work.
  20. I went for right for the following reasons. The slightly smaller upper bout would make for better upper fret access. The deeper waste will make it more stable when playing in the classical position. I like the look as it is a bit retro. I have a 1920's Spanish classical that has close to the same. The wood and finish would make a differrence though. If you are using unusual wood or finish I would go for the left.
  21. If it works it is a great find. I like that you are always willing to try to find a different and usualy cheaper way to do things.
  22. If the neck keep migrating, why not put threaded inserts into the screw holes and have it be a real bolt on?
  23. me thinks it is a long list but put me on it too.
  24. I have heard that mohawk is the same material. Try here and good luck. http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/
