  1. I'd love to see what you do with it, when you find it again. I did not really find it bland to look at....if it was finished properly. The stuff I saw had a deep luster when polished....and it polished beautifully. Sort of like gaboon ebony crossed with tiger eye quartz. SR
  2. How big a piece are you looking for? I used to always see these rudimentary carvings of desert ironwood in Mexican mercados for not to terrible prices....especially in the Mexican border towns, but also in San Antonio. I remember seeing a football sized football carving for $30 or $40 and often wished I picked it up with the idea of re-carving it into something decent. Does Denver have a Mexican market? If not Denver, maybe Pueblo or Trinidad? SR
  3. Great, thanks for the input guys. Now I'm just going to have to find a source for it here in the states. I could have sworn I'd seen it at StewMac in the past- but not now. SR
  4. Beautiful theme for this build. I expect you're going to be a popular man around the house in a month or so. I'm sure you are already, what with all the stuff you've built already. Does your wife's friends ever ask to borrow you solely for your wordworking/handyman skills? (Probably happens to a lot of us). I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this. SR
  5. I love the neck join and carve. These are almost more artwork than guitar. From the rear they look like a sculpture of a candle flame. SR
  6. I'm getting the impression that you both would choose laqcuer over this with good finishing weather. I've certainly seen some gorgeous finishes done with it--emphatically including those that Wez has thoughtfully provided. I'm mostly interested out of curiosity and for a comparison to lacquer. I like lacquer just fine, but the long curing time is tedious and it has a tendency to pull away at edges without special care and chip if you bang an edge. I sure is easy to repair and poish though. All things being equal and good weather at hand would you both choose laqcuer first? SR
  7. Hey Chris is still alive! Good to hear from you again. Your story reminds me of the Ron White line: I had the right to remind silent.......but I didn't have the ability. Congrats on the firefighter EMT deal. I have a couple of friends doing the same thing and a brother in law that just retired frrom the fire dept. That's a worthwhile profession, be proud. We'll look forward to seeing more of this build.....some day. SR
  8. Wez are you saying RCP is sprayable and in fact is easy to spray? Or at least easier than brushing? Or were you saying spraying lacquer is easier than brushing this? SR
  9. Thanks Paulie. The garage it will be. How long does it take to cure? SR
  10. I've been thinking of using Rustin's on my next build.....somewhat because of its history and mostly out of curiosity. I've seen a few builds here that used it and looked great. PaulieMac and Muzz come to mind, although it feels like I should remember others. So what are the pros and cons of the stuff? Is it hard or soft, easy or difficult....I'm assuming it cures much faster than nitro. Can you tint it? Does it have witness lines when leveling? Brush on or spray on? Who likes it? Who thinks it sucks? I'm not sure about inquiring minds....but I'd like to know. Thanks, Scott
  11. Nicely done....subtle change improved the visual balance IMO. You mentioned that this was your favorite ABM bridge. Is that because of it's tank like construction, or does it have other qualities that you prefer. I was looking at getting a Hipshot hardtail this time instead of the Schaller roller bridges I've been using. SR
  12. I would love to be able to do all my clamping with bench vises. SR
  13. Ah... I've used vinyl sanding sealer on many projects and it sands easy fills easy and dries quickly. I've used lacquer sanding sealer and had blush problems out the wazoo. Regular lacquer as a sealer would be fine...not as friendly as vinyl but fine. I was under the impression that was not a first choice of yours so I suggested an alternative. Vinyl does sand and clean up easier SR
  14. On the HS I don't see much point to using tru-oil and lacquer as they are not hugely different in appearance and the face of your HS will look different from the sides even if finished with the same material under normal viewing conditions. The light will hit the face and sides from different angles after all. If you decide to go with both however, I wouldn't worry about a line....assuming your finishes will meet at a corner/edge the light will create a line to your eye anyway. I'd just use lacquer on the neck and HS (since you're using it on the body anyway. Get your neck all leveled and then spray a light satin using the valute as a border as you mentioned. I'd go with the vinyl sanding sealer to mask the body binding. It's just easier. SR
  15. Since you love the way it sounds, and it sold almost immediately, there's really only one thing you can do.....build another one right away! Congrats, that was obviously a successful build. SR
  16. I just got around to checking this out. I can see why it's good to be listed here. I couldn't help noticing the listing was for this guitar but the video was for Abused Blues #1. It sounded great, but your description made this one sound like it would have a unique tone that I was looking forward to hearing. Ah, well.....still very cool. SR
  17. That's a seriously good idea, quite possibly the smartest thing I've heard all day. SR
  18. I'm not a big fan of headstocks that are heavier at the top than the bottom. The visual balance looks off to me....but obviously that is just my opinion, which may not be in accord with any others. What I like about the original is it is visually heavier at the bottom and the swoop at the top mimics the swoop formed by the two horns. It's another opinion of mine that tying an element of the HS to an element of the body is a design strength. SR
  19. About your only HS reduction option is to reduce the amount of flair and take a little off the top end. That would improve the visual balance IMO. The deep red is very nice, and now that I see bevels, I can see that they would look good too. The horns may end up being lethal though. SR
  20. +1 +1 It feels very strange for me to agree with that...but I think it works for this one. Dragon's blood sounds right for this. SR
  21. BOLLIX TO THAT !! Its just the guitar tellin you it doesent like the neck or finish or customer or whatever. put it away for a bit then come back to it again. Iv had lots of little frankensteins turn out to be absolute gems. even if they take 2 years or more to get finished it always worth it (nothing to do with my pig headed refusal to let some piece of fookin timber get the better of me ) Not to mention, RAD, that your Hand Of Doom fought you every step of the way....at least the ziricote did, and what a masterpiece that turned out to be. SR
  22. Excellent job on the neck, love the box; keep it up- this is getting very interesting! SR
