  1. Just my opinion here. But I rekon you need a pin stripe around the Searls logo. Something just doesnt look right about the red floating there. Apart from that - lookin good as always man
  2. Gotta agree with Scott. Fake F holes suck, its like a V8 badge on a prius. But - stain will not work neatly enough, so decal or pain is the only real way to go here. Unless you inlay a darker timber for them. Personaly i would do real F holes, or at least recess them 3mm into the body. Just opinion but as Scott said - you did ask.
  3. Man, I just love your work. So clean. my stuff always seems to be a big mashed up mangeling of chaos that somehow produces guitars
  4. I sometimes do something similar. A copper strip screwed into the cavity floor in a line between the pots, about 1.5mm thk. Then all of the earth wires get soldered into an electrical ring connector. then screw the connector to the copper plate. realy realy quiet guitars. Same idea as demonx, just dont need 2 irons,
  5. Holy krap thats some work shop you have there, must be 4 times what I work with. you jammy bstrd Although I have 2 big dogs in mine, So I suppose that kinda evens it all out
  6. Green Quilted JS. Built this for myself a good while back. Its a little beat up at this point but Its a player not an ornament. Always ment to enter it here but never got around to it. So here goes. Body: single piece sapele back, book matched quilted maple top. Neck: Black walnut, Rosewood compound radius fret board. Side dot markers. madium frets, Quilted face on headstock. Titanium filings in resin inlay. Bolt on. Oil finish with laquer on face of head stock. Hardware: Gotoh machine heads. Ibanez Edge tremolo & locking nut. 1x Vol, 1x Tone, 3 way toggle switch. 2x humbuckers, All cloth/wax wrapped wiring, orange drop cap. 500K pots. Body Finish: Green stain over black on front quilt. cherry over black on back. high gloss 2k finish.
  7. Considering the finish I ended up with id say Demonx advice was spot on. I dont use any heat when spraying, just the room temp. For 2k automotive finishes the manufacturers usual information is geared toward spraying in a booth & then baking. Cant bake a guitar.
  8. Thanks Scott. So when are we gonna see something else from your & the bear ?
  9. I use CA or sometimes fish glue. But it realy does depend on the reason behind glueing. Are you just keen to try it out or is there a reason you think glue may be required ? like loose fret slots ?
  10. No you can not get a template for their install. You can buy the frets in a pack as far as I know. But I do not know the exact placement of each fret from the nut. All I know for sure is that the standard division of 17.817 thing is out the door here. But to be honest I dont see the point. The wole point of all of these compensated nut / saddle / fret systems is to prevent your guitar going out of tune when playing. But as soon as you fret a string you screw it all up anyway. Action, string guage, finger pressure, fret wear, finger technique all have a factor to play here. so all of these systems are pointless as far as I am concerned. But Give it a go, Id be interested in the outcome. as im sure most of the other builders on here would
  11. I usualy modify my neck jigs to be a little smaller than the tennon going into them to avoid this problem. I shrink the neck pocket by 0.05mm all around, 2 layers of masking tape on the edges of the template usualy makes enough of a difference. I find its better to be thining a neck heel with a few passes on sand paper than shimming a neck pocket - so much easier. Still, Looking good so far. I dig this body shape
  12. That kinda depends. You have all sorts of pit falls with this stuff. If you do get a set of frets & install them, you can not say the guitar has the true temp system installed. Rather only that YOU have installed true temp frets. Trust me on this one. I built a guitar for myself a while ago, Took it down to a local dealer to get a case for it & let the guys there check it out as they loved my stuff. One of the guys shows it to a distrabuter / Rep for one of the major brands they stock as it was based on one of their guitars. The Rep was seriously impressed. So much so in fact that I was contacted by their fookin legal team with a cease & decist order. The problem was that when the guy in the shop handed it to the Rep, he said "Check out this $&@, its an exact replica - just like the ones your guys produced" But I never corrected him, I never said it was NOT a $&@. & now I can not make them anymore.
  13. The boys have a point there, You need to run a saw thru the side somewhere & check out the overall construction of the board. The weight may be a good indicator aswell, but for now id slice a piece off & have a look inside.
  14. Prety close to the money there. Colour is inspired by the Shelby Cobra 427.
  15. That would drive me nuts. Id have to move one of those tuners out a little. Id shift the left one in the pik above by a few mm. then probobly use larger washers on all of the tuners to hide the repair from the front. Only need to hide a fook up on one, but use bigger washers on all for continuity.
  16. Only 4 entries this month & Not a single comment from anybody Bit odd, but OK
  17. Scott has it nailed here. you may need to chamber it a bit. But talk to your buddy about what he considers a heavy guitar thats playable & one thats more like a power lifting session. Personaly I like 11-12 lb gitirs. but then a mate who is about half my size again (& is a weigh lifting 6 foot 18 stone tank) does not like anything over 6-7 lbs. If your buddy can handle 9-10 lb guitars then you may only need to contour the hell out of it. Radical contouring like this can be very effective in weight reduction http://www.aeolianguitars.com/photo16540171.html Talk to the intended owner before you do anything else I rekon.
  18. COBRA Body: Chambered mahogany core, 25mm maple top carved with a recurve, 16mm thick maple back with shallow carve. Pearloid binding. Neck: 5 piece laminate. Maple & mahogany. Mahogany headstock with scarf joint & small volute. Ebony fretboard, medium nickle silver frets, Side dot markers, Pearloid binding, Bone nut, Hardware, 2x humbuckers. Alnico2 unpotted, 2 wire with nickle covers. 1x vol. 1x tone. 3 way toggle switch. Cloth wrapped wiring, orange drop cap. No shielding in cavities. Gotoh tun-o-matic bridge & tail piece. Gotoh machine heads. High gloss/polished 2k poly finish.
  19. Glad you like it. Went down a treat here, Didnt even make it to the shop window. Produced it in the shop, told the guy "I want €800.00 for these in this spec" & a customer of his baught it on the spot ha ha ha. If only every sale was that easy.
  20. +1 recurves can be a problem area to get right. Havent done a real archtop in over a year, but the hollow used to drive me nuts. Still , your making nice progress, lookin good so far.
  21. Well, Thas told me ha ha. Ah fook it. if its realy bothering you then mangle the krap out of it, It is kinda theraputic to just strap one to a tree & tear it up with an axe if its being a dik.
  22. Stripped this one & polished the hell out of it. Reassembeled then hit the camera man up for a few piks. I may just have to GOTM this one - hated having to give it back to the customer.
  23. Stop punching yourself in the head man. relax. Id finish it up realy groovey if I were you. Deepen the carve a little & bind the edges to hide any pin lines of glue (koz lets face it, thats all you probobly have) Centralise the belly cut to the lenght of the gitir a bit. Finish it in rustins (cheap n quick - ish) Put on medium grade hardware & get some good piks for advertisement/promotion then pass it on to a shop or some guy for a half decent price (cover your materials). You may not be happy with it but I can abso-fookin-lutly guarantee you someone out there will appreciate the hell out of it.
  24. Some more piks. same gitir - but who cares. I like how this came out. Nice feel when playing it, good tone & faster than fresh cow muck off of a greased shovel
  25. Been stupidly busy with crap to do lately so havent gotten much done on these. But I did get the red alpha sorted. Friend of mine took some piks of it for me, His cameras are sooooo much better than mine I love the fooked up grain in the back of ash necks
