  1. LOL I would actually buy ringside tickets to see that argument happen. "the best techniques"
  2. It's nice to have my name called in such company. I'm still around. Life has become very busy and I still have several unfinished builds...promised myself I wouldn't start anything new until I finish those. Into last fall, I spent alot of time resawing and prepping body blanks, tops, neck blanks and fretboards. I'll be back in it this spring for sure. Although it's not a guitar per se, I have been working on a cab conversion for a Vox AC4TV. Laminated spalted and flame maple. I didn't care for the stock 10" speaker setup so I'm building a 12" cab and a head for the chasis. Wasn't sure it fit the forum here so I haven't started a thread. ??? Peace, Mark I'm not sure about anyone else but I would love to see a cab build!
  3. Walnut is perfectly acceptable (maybe even a step up from Alder or Ash) tone wood. eh? What flavor of walnut? Black? I am fond of the expensive ones... Claro, Franquette, Bastogne, Peruvian. But Black or anything from the West coast of the US is fine. Watch out for the cut... a lot of plain walnut is riftsawn and it is tough to find nice quartersawn or flatsawn pieces. Awesome, I saw i nice looking walnut board the other day. I thought it was labled black walnut. The price was good, maybe I'll give it a shot. It'll give me something to play around with until the tops and fret boards show up for my other builds.

  5. Yeah I was kinda bummed out about it. I totally love the look of pine, but your right it is a pain to work with. Tough stuff to get to sand level. Pine is pretty cheap around here. Alder is too. I might give alder a try. Either way I need a new test body.
  6. Cutting scarf joint My arm got tired right about here Glue up, I used staples to keep it from slipping. It worked, but I'll probably try the drill bit trick next time. one of the staples shot through the neck. No biggie since it's getting cut off any way, but I had to scramble and throw a long clamp on it. Thankfully it didn't do any damage to the neck and stuff. hoping the tip of the headstock fits when I thin the headstock. Math says it will. My luck says I'll probably fook it up. possibly Thinking about doing a long tenon on this one. I feel really bad about putting a top on this blank to begin with and the neck seemed to perfectly land where my floyd trem is going to start. The end of the maple in this pic is 1/4" past where my posts will sit. What do yinz guys think about running the maple all the way to the trem and a clear finish on this one? My only reservation is I tend to break necks. That is why I was planning on bolt ons originally.
  7. Ok, so if you drop a pine body off of a workbench with 5 large iron c clamps attached to it, the top horn will crack. If you decide to just break it off all of the way and glue it back on, stop. It will splinter like mad leaving no hope of cleanly glueing it back on. Looks like my test blank is toast and i'm down to two guitars now.
  8. Hi guys here are three new ones I'm working on. I figure if I make it out with at least one good one, I'll be good to go. Here are the specs, but I haven't bought or built all the parts yet so I reserve the right to change my mind or listen to all of the killa advise you guys toss around. 2 Mahogany bodies with 1/4'' maple shallow carved tops. 1 pine body with flat top. All will have bolt on maple necks the carved tops will have ebony fretboards the pine will have a maple fretboard. abalone dots off center Floyd trems pickups TBD, but I want H-S-H on at least one of them. and the rest I'll figure out when I get there. So, the router jig is built Here's the postercard drawings of what I'm going for. Here's the blanks ruffed out
  9. If your target is "metalheads", I'd figure out a way to add a bit more fret access. That lower cutaway looks a little shallow. I'd widen the horns and add another string too. Thanks for posting them man. They'll probaly look pretty cool once you get it dialed in. And for the record the Flintstones and GWAR freaking rock!
  10. If you're going to sell these things, I would advise that you hire a public relations professional or a mar-com professional to handle your communications in the future. Having the chops to build an innovative(debatable) neck and having the chops to message it to potential clients are two totally different things. You are adept at the former, the latter, not so much. Very cool look though. I like the pop rivets as fret markers idea. I'd bet a blued(gunbarrel) neck would look pretty sweet.
  11. Get some thicker bushings for the posts? Looks like you got a different body from the one in the first pic.
  12. As well as the exact same writing style right down to gramatical errors. LOL The guy is pretending to be someone else that is sticking up for himself? Holy Hell I love this site. Yous guys are a freaking riot All that aside, I don't vote for GOTM since I don't have a shop right now. I don't deserve to have an opinion if I'm not activly building.
  13. WOW! Very freaking nice man. That was soooooo worth the refinish. I can't wait to see this one when it is done.
  14. Hambones and bones in general are a lot cheaper at the butcher shop. I used to get cow hip joints from a local butcher for free. My dogs loved them. I've never tried to make a nut out of one, but there is usually enough femur left on them to give it a try. Let me know how it works out. My back yard has dozens of these things buried in it.
  15. Looks like I picked a bad week to quit sniffing glue. Curious, what did you use to glue up your body blank and lam neck?
  16. Man, I love this guitar. It looks like "the 80's metal god" drove 120 mph into a Highway Cone. Absolutley awesome! I'd like to make an rg style that color. Do you guys think I could get a good finish on a couple cans of highway orange upside down construction paint?
  17. Looks great man. Awesome scoot too. I had one of those for years as a commuter bike. It's rare to see one in such good shape these days.
  18. The lowes out here doesn't carry maple. However, I did use some poplar from there on some prototypes. It was dry.
  19. I dunno man, I think it looks pretty cool with the maple stripe.
  20. HAHAHAHAHAH! I had a roomate that went through the same thing. Only, replace "food" with "waitress"
  21. Worst injury was taking some steel wool/wd 40 to some rust on an old iron bench vise I picked up free at a yard sale. It sliped out of my hand onto my toe. Should have lag-ed it down first, I guess. I dropped a finished body the other day. I need a padded shop.
  22. What is the bass player playing through now?
