  1. Remember it was the 80's . . . It used to have a Duncan JB, but I replaced it with a DiMarzio X2N. Holy crap high gain.
  2. This weekend, I finally rebuilt my #1 after about 25-30 years. Built around the same time as yours, I had completed it and actually was playing it in my band. But it had many things going against it, so it was dismantled and mothballed. But recently, i decided to put it back together and give it the love it deserved, It's a 6-string V, and went from 25.5" scale to 24.75, a new pup, new finish (bad though), and I'm SO glad I did it. I left all the warts and seams, didn't try to improve anything besides the scale length, just made it what it should have been. It's weird because I didn't have an insane level of nostalgia for it before, but it certainly holds a place now.
  3. I love it! It's the only one I've seen that can beat the ubiquitous Workmate bench!
  4. I'll never get enough of that little bench cube! Didn't it have a vice on it? The sandpaper / plane is genius. Total headsmacker moment.
  5. Love this discussion. So many "tangible intangibles" we talk about in my business (graphic design/marketing). While I can go on about it all day, I tend to follow my gut (which is informed by the lifetime of aesthetic study) and just know when "it feels RIGHT". @StratsRdivine I've got a design I've been working on a lot, and it has a lot of the subtle curve interplay you mention that can be so tricky, but not as tricky as the one you show. It is interesting when you do something that is more of a Strat variant, or even just two-horned, and how the tried and true shapes have influence on what feels right.
  6. Here's the ebony. I'm not sure either, it would make for a very dark front along with a black or ebony headstock face, ebony FB. Everything on the back would be all goldeny korina. I'll do some really rough mockups on the 'puter this weekend. I keep thinking it would be sweet to make it slightly deeper and semi-hollow too, but I think I'm just getting overexcited with options.
  7. My current 'on deck' builds are/were: -8-string multiscale with complicated inlay -a semi-hollow built around a custom set of Trisonics with Greg Fryer parts and a BM RS-like trem. So what do I do but push another new build in front of the line. Best laid plans . . . I've had a set of custom wound P90s sitting around, wound by Clint Searcy. I don't even remember when I had them made. I've got a good start on previous build that uses a neck through korina, and already has the truss route and carbon bars epoxied in. Korina LP Jr Doublecut special My intentions are not to create a straight up replica, but to keep the essence and have my way with it -white limba / korina neck through -right now it's 25" scale, but I may cave in and make it 24.75" -Macassar ebony fingerboard, with MOP 1/4" dots. I may freak out and do edge rectangles or something -set of these P90s (8.6k), only because I have them. I may freak out and only use one in the spirit of this thing. -Kluson 3+3, nickel -vintage Leo Quann Badass wraparound, but I'm using a locking stud kinda like TonePros. -I really want to relic it, IDK why. Create mojo? It just feels right, and I'll never do it again, and it's fun. The Quann is pretty beat so everything should match? The Klusons are nickel relic. I have relic strap buttons, screws, and am looking at every knob ever made to try to find the right ones. There are some insanely relic'd/rusted domes on Ebay that look kinda fun. -black pickguard, or black 3-ply. Looked at tortoise . . . not sure. -I was thinking thin nitro finish, then freeze / heat cycles to craze it for even more relic fun. I've sourced a set of templates because I'm lazy, want it to be accurate, and because I'm lazy. Not sure if I will do the 2 pup/4 knob plus switch, or 2 pup / 2 knob plus switch, or 1 pup / 2 knob. I'm open to votes on anything. Lastly, in the last day I've considered top facing it with the large ebony 'plates' (1/8" x 21" x ~7") I've been waiting to use on the right thing. This one has me really intrigued, but might change the vintage aesthetics? Please weigh in. All parts here or on the way, I've got the wood and the neck-through already built, and a fire in my belly.
  8. NP. I tack the pieces down (I think I used Duco last time?), then use a sharp scribe to trace close as possible. You did an awesome job on yours!
  9. I follow Scotts sentiment as a father of two boys. Speechless. Incredibly clean build, Have you thought about your finish? Stain?I didn't see in your pics, but after you scribe around the fretboard inlay, rubbing chalk over it makes the lines pop really bright for routing.
  10. I'm prepping to do a 15g batch of a Belgian in the next week or two. I don't name my beers (just number them), but I might call this one Stairs Sleeper. Oh, and I'm totally stealing the staggered dots for this next build, but it won't be an SG like I said earlier.
  11. Hadn't seen this before, and it is a subtlety. But, the low dots under the low strings and the high dots under the high strings . . I wouldn't think that's something that would resonate with me, but it really works here. The dots lead the eye asymmetrically to and through the pick guard. . . it just works smashingly.
  12. I won't comment on the binding part, but what I do is: -slot on a sled -cut rough taper (very close to final) -do about 1/2 of the radius -inlays -glue to neck using cauls, and locator pins so it doesn't scoot -finish radius -reslot as necessary, by hand
  13. Devil is in the details. (nothing wrong with that Psiko. Devil = 666) That top is delicious. The carve is so effective with the subtle edge on the horns vs the subtle curve of the back end.
  14. This thread. UGH. I've got a guitar refinished that needs put together, I've got an 8-string coco-necked multi-scale uber build that I've got no time or reason for, the red special trisonic pickup build that I'm actually gearing up for, and no space for any new guitars. BUT, I've also got this mothballed korina neck through with carbon bars already epoxied in it, truss channel cut, and angles done. Two custom wound P90s and between this thread and watching Phil X vids on YouTube, all I can think about is an insane plain korina SG. Thanks for that.
  15. I recently had an Ebay auction pulled "for trademark violations" or breach of terms of service or whatever. After going through my account to figure out what listing it was ( it had been wiped from the face of the earth), I figured out it was a HAT. Not just any hat, but one that used a hook and loop closure which everyone calls velcro. Well, Velcro found me and my ilicit activity and sent a cease and desist, and Ebay quickly complied. wtf Sorry to get off track. I got to see Motorhead once. Wish I could remember who they were with. Memory isn't what it used to be.
  16. http://classicamplification.net/pu/altp.html Looks like RIC goes after anyone doing anything like that. Scroll to the bottom.
  17. or Jeff. Unless Mr Naturals name is Rob, in which case I'm a twit.
  18. Isn't that why we are all here? Kick each other in the ass? Have a shoulder to cry on? Cheerleading? Bit of brandy and pipe smoking by the fireside as we ponder subtle curve adjustments or wood tonality? I've got at least two or three projects gestating, morphing into each other and back again, trying desperately to become the most important thing and be born. Too many other hobbies, life, etc get in the way, but eventually we all find our way back here and begin the beautiful toil once again.
  19. Dredging this up because OMFG that boat is unbelievable. VERY nice work there, and a lot of it I bet. What is it's method of propulsion?
  20. Pups first. You will need 8 pole HBs and since it is a multi-scale instrument, your individual coils will need to be staggered. You need to have each string go directly over each pole piece on both coils. If you can get that of the shelf, cool, if not it's pretty custom. Electronics ppl, can you can wire two 8 pole singles next to each other to create your own staggered HB? As far as the woods, the description of the tone you are looking for, added to the amount of pull from 8 string guages makes me think koa is not the wood you are looking for. I'm very familiar with koa, it;s spectacular, easy working and similar to mahogany maybe but I'm thinking you want something with much more strength to counteract the string forces. You want the strings to ring very clear, "bell-like" would be a good description. I;d be looking at something like layered maple, wenge, rosewoods, cocobolo, bubinga, or something like that. I've got an 8-string multi-scale project on hold right now with a roughed in neck of cocobolo that has a tap tone like a marimba bar. My personal preference is not to layer woods, as sanding and planing is a PITA as they both usually respond to the tool differently.
  21. I guess it's just me, but I always thought the LP was nice since you are usually changing the pup position on the fly. It's closer to your head and I could get more accurate switching, and faster, especially in the dark. That said, maybe it's just because it's 3-position. My current custom strat has three mini toggles down by the knobs and its no brainer easy on-off for each pup.
  22. We still refer to our cat as "pussy" purely because of Mrs Slocombe and her comedic effect.
