  1. noice. that third one there is soowheat. I just got an email from downhomewoods that they got a bunch more carved tops in. Some pretty sweet looking stuff too. Honestly I need to stop collecting wood until my building catches up with my wood pile... but I gotta admit I was kinda thinking about it anyway! currently I have two carve tops, 4 - 6 quilt tops, figured mahog, figured walnut, birdseye, figured redwood... and then a whole pile of flamed maple that's all 3/4 and some of it is wide enough to be resawn for tops, plus a couple 8' lengths of 8/4 flamed maple for solid body. must... resist... urge... to... buy.... more... wood! you never know when those sources will dry up tho!
  2. that is starting to look pretty cool. are you going to paint the body? I could see it beeing really cool with flat black drybrushed with some bronze or some other sort of black/bronze combo. Is it heavy? nicely done. thank you for sharing.
  3. would seem a shame to waste such a big and pretty piece of wood for just a few ctrl cavities. I think as long as you tie it in by matching with something else... it'll look good, possibly even better.
  4. nicely done! kinda looks like your skull is biting the 14th!
  5. Thank you Mr Nat! I'm working on her in the background. the top if finished, and I'm slowly re-doing the binding. it's slow going cause I do about 2" in the morning and 2" at night. any more than that and it will bend away in one spot while you get it tight in another. my progress may have just hit a brick wall tho because I bought a mesa triaxis and am going to have to re-arrange my rack to wire it up... which has me thinking... "why not build a nice hardwood studio rack?" the pine one does the job so... "must... resist... urge... to... build... super-rack"
  6. right on... it probably would look good worn a bit. now if only we can get goldmember to play it! hehe. I love gold stuff, not sure why others hate on it.
  7. there is a line that continues from the fretboard to the body on the purple one... but i don't see that on the green one... not sure due to the color... but I like that feature. also... I like the idea of using wormy wood. Idk why... just kind of don't see that a lot, but it looks kewl. some nice stuff there... great work.
  8. Sounds really good ad, also some nice playing there.
  9. you have been quick to watch my vids and I appreciate that... will give this a listen at lunch.
  10. odd coincidence... just saw a guy that was doing a solid cedar strat build and it looked an awful lot like this. telltale cream and pink mix. would love to find a figured cedar top of any variant. have to bolo for that. thanks both for the education in wood.
  11. i think you were one of the folks who said that to me (regarding leaving space)... so credit where due.
  12. once it's build... I don't suppose anyone would know the difference of how it got cut, we all have to work to our strengths! in your case def seems like you have an affinity for doing by hand so... good on ya.
  13. well, for the bigger routers they kinda do. the rigid ones and a few others have leds built into the base. that said... it's pretty easy to wire up an led or two to a resistor/battery. I've spent a lot of time doing 'light bases' for pedals and the sm thing would work wonders here. you file down an led right up to the diode itself to give it a flat head, epoxy it directly to lexan, wire up a resistor and then to the battery. This lights up the entire lexan as the led will refract all over the place and thru it. I've seen some make led base for routers... using a watch battery clip that you can buy from tayda and others. I plan to do much the sm. get a water clear high brightness led, and epoxy that and a battery enclosure to the lexan, wire it up to a momentary on the tip of a handle so it's only on when you press it.
  14. def some nice looking wood there. I can't imagine hand sawing that much stock myself but then I try to avoid doing anything w hand tools - just not my bag. turned out pretty good for you b4 so... sounds like you got this. can't wait to see it done... also wood envy every time i see that walnut.
  15. just a thought but a few times I've been told that when you do something other than a flat fretboard end - it looks better to leave some space. I've done sort of a byrdland end, and an s-style curve and def found that to be true so I could see that working here if you maybe put a triangle point echoing the headstock or something like that. again, to me it would actually look great w the flat end and a little space, but if you don't like it that's what counts. just 2 cents.
  16. No idea what u r going thru... but i feel like "I know the feeling". Building for me has become how I forget about all the 5 o'clock traffic in my mind... until I run up against some trouble... then it becomes more 5 o'clock traffic! Here's to some open lanes for both of us.
  17. right on and tru dat. I did some afa my logo... and was surprised at how easy it was to get my meager results afa cutting the mop. That said, cutting the area to place it in is a dif story, and i've only done that on ebony which is pretty forgiving. def have lots of opportunity to improve there so will do. b4 I do it next time... I'm going to try to build/modify my own dremel base for it. I don't really like anything I can buy (or have bought) so that's my horizon. biggest issue seems to be getting light in the right area while the router is there... so I plan to use some plexi and flat leds. anywho, again... lookin good.
  18. learn more every day.. I always thought cedar was just cedar. never occurred to me how many similar but different variations there are of all the woods around the world. btw really like that Eucalyptus ... is some really exotic looking stuff
  19. doubt it helps... but the one I was referring to was sold to me as 'western cedar'. Obviously not a scientific name and I would have no idea... but I'm guessing someone here will know what the common cedar is in the use. so in short... I'm useless. edit according to wiki Thuja plicata ... "It is not a true cedar of the genus Cedrus" someone might want to confirm me.
  20. love it. it's on my todo list to try something like this as I spose that's the only way you learn. thanks for being inspirational.
  21. i hadn't considered that... you think it's still weatherproof? Never really thought it was much to look at, not that it's not pretty, but the northern stuff seems to guarantee a nice sounding acoustic as all that I've played - classical to steel string - have seemed to have a unique sort of soft mid range boost. I wonder if it would come across as well in a solid body.
  22. a fav acoustic of mine... some 20+ years old now... has a cedar top. as it's aged the sound just keeps getting better and better - sweeter and sweeter. lovely stuff
