  1. I got a set of three rasps from Homebase in the UK. It cost me about £10 for the set and they seem very good. I have had them for less than a year though but I've certainly got no troubles. Chineese steel is getting better as they are having to knock out loads of it just for consumption in China. China is using about a third of the steel produced in the world now which is making it more expensive. They're also using a hell of a lot of copper which means that the cables I use keep going up in price . But then again I don't have to pay for them British steel is still by far the best though, especially the stainless.
  2. You could cut it up, but then you'd have to wait a few years for it to dry. I know becuse there has been slab of sycamore in my shed for ages now and it's still wetter than Peewee Herman in the shower. I'm not actually sure (well infact I don't actually know) if walnut would be suitable for a neck. I don't know if it's stable enough and I think the & versions of the tree are different anyway. I did find that neck laminates were suprisingly cheap. If you use a couple of maple laminates on the outside and some other suitable wood in the middle, you should be able to pick it up quite easy. I also found that once you stop worrying about it and just get on with it, shaping a neck wasn't too hard, you've just got to be careful Good luck dude. Oh yeah, still chop the tree up and leave it in the shed to dry. That way in a few years you'll have some lovely wood (you might need to wax the endgrain of walnut to make sure it doesn't go funky though)
  3. It's called direct mounting and some believe that it makes the tone even better as vibrations on the pup are less damped than with using rings. Right then, we now interupt this post for someone with the accurate info on how to do it as I don't know and all my info is second hand
  4. Unfortunately you'll have to wait your turn. We're still laughing at people that have been here ages enjoy the forum dude and don't forget to check out the rest of the site (tutorials, suppliers, gallery etc - it took me ages to find)
  5. Whats the little bright bit by the neck pup? Is that a reflection or a toy? Nice axe man, I'd change those butt ugle knobs though, eeeww I had some of them on a cheap strat and every time I see them now errrh (even on a lovely beast like that )
  6. You could do that......... .........But all you would have is a magnet You can buy all the pickup supplies you require from www.ampge.com This includes the bobbins, magnets, wire, pole pieces etc etc. You'll also have to build a pickup winder. There is a great little book with all the plans in and bill of materials by a bloke called Jason Lollar (who is a regular at ampge). I originally looked at his design and thought that it would be good if I was making a winder to use all the time. As I'm only doing a few, I decided to pull the back wheels off a remote controlled car and attach one end of the axle to a counter and the other to a face plate to hold the bobbin. Next I built a frame to hold it all out of Mechano. i think I have the only Subaru Imprezza pick up winder in existance There is also a thread in the Electronics tutorials about building a winder and pups. I'm going to be winding 2HB's for my scratch project and rewinding 2 SC's and 1 HB for my modding project. I've also promissed my bro a HB and an SC for his bass. I should stop offering to do stuff when I get drunk Peace Kaj
  7. It comes in big buckets with a seperate hardener too
  8. Yeah, my old mans playing with that stuff at the moment. i think polyester resin is the same stuff as casting resin Oh well, I'll just have to make do with stealing pencils
  9. Yeah man, it's some real dangerous nasty stuff Unfortunately I don't think it's going to suitable, been watching someone joint some cables today and it's a sort of unexpected sand/dissentry colour Never mind I'll have to find something else. Now where's that Benzene
  10. Alrighty dudes I've just been outside of the office for a quick and found....... ......50 litres of polyueratane resin Before I decide to steel some, is it suitable for guitars? It's some tough stuff, we use it for jointing cables that have 11,000 Volts running through them. Dries clear too
  11. Nice one Ansil. Once I've stopped being shafted by my bank and actually have some money to spend on something other than food (and the occasional beer ), I'll be in touch again and we can sort this amp out. I might hound the missus to sort me one for christmas, or I might ger her one for her birthday . Hopefully by then I'll have decided on fx too and we can sort it in one big expensive swoop. Good luck with the projects
  12. Hay Ansil, could I incorporate the CD player into the amp and have the CD player and guitar all comming through the amp so that I can play over the top of some music? Any problems with getting 5 and 12V off the normal power supply? I quite like he idea of an amp with a CD draw in the front
  13. Have a look at the "House of Jim" - gonna have to be a google job. www.diystompboxes.com <-----or something like that, they have PCB's too Talk to ansil, he'll probably be able to help you out Hope this helps, I had to search parts of my memory that haven't been used for some time so I'm not sure if the links are going to be absolutely right. Good luck dude, I'll be doing this after the guitars (and the amp) are finished
  14. Nah amn, that looks about right. For someone who's as useless on the guitar as I am, I need extra buttons and knobs to play with, it helps when you can't hold a tune. Saying that though, I'm quite simple too..... .... I used play drums
  15. I know that feeling. Hopefully mine will be done before I'm 40. I was 25 last week and I've been working on it for a year Works sopped again until I can find someone with a Dremel and a belt sander that I can borrow. Oh....Nice flames GF
  16. There is a tip on getting the right depth of cut for the frets in the tutorials section I think. It was by Brian either way and it goes along the lines of: Check out your frets and decide on the depth of cut that you'll need. Mark this on a credit card and tape off the unwanted area so that you can still see plain old credit card thats the same depth as you want the cut. Cut to this depth. Radius fretboard. Put credit card in slot and move around, you'll be able to see how deep it needs re-cutting. Re-cut. That's only a quick guide so check out the tutorial. BTW (only a minor hijack here) - When I'm going to epoxy the fretboard onto the neck, should I only put the glue on either side of the truss rod or should I put it on the truss rod aswell. It's a U Channel type truss rod with the open side taped up and facing down towards the back of the neck. Cheers dudes
  17. Just one of the reasons that my bro is emigrating there. So he will be Canadian. I on the other hand am not Canadian, but still agree with the above. I wish everyone would just calm the hell down and bite their respective tounges. Can we all get on with building guitars now please
  18. YO BUDMAN! If I was to send you some wood, could you machine 2 pup rings out of it? Just a thought
  19. If ou are going to be using a drum sander in the pillar drill, then it may be worth looking to upgrade that a bit. I'm using my dads cheap ass pillar drill (£30 brand new from homebase) and it's wicked for a £30 drill but that's about as far as it goes. Like Tdog was saying about bearings, they're a bit dodgy and I wouldn't like applying sideways force on them.
  20. I think they said it all above. Next time I'm in the big smoke I'll buy you a pnt if you bring the guitar along
  21. Nice one guys , I'll go and do some more research before I buy my stuff. Expect this thread to be re-opened in a month or so.
  22. Right then dudes, this is a bit of a follow up question to my last one....... ....... I'm going to have 4 pots on my LP Jr (1 tone and 1 vol for each humbucker) What I was going to do was have a push/pull for each tone pot and have the neck pup split between single/double coil and the other tone pot givin in/out of phase. This has evolved slightly as now I want more sounds to play with (if it ain't broke, it ain't got enough features - as someone wise on this board once told me, if only I could remember who said it) I was thinking of using push/pull pots for the volumes too so that I can fiddle about with more options. Can anyone help me out here? I don't need a diagram (well not yet anyway) but I don't know what other usefull features to put on it. Someone please help because I want toys to play with Cheers guys, see you Monday.
  23. Ry Cooder, JJ Cale, Johnny Marr, Dimebag. But my absolute fav is my mate John. He is awesome, he's been playing longer than I've been alive (builds a kick arse resonator too)
  24. Got broadband at work and that's the only time I go on the net. Can't afford a house phone (takes up valuable beer tokens) otherwise it would be dial up.
