Cool idea?? YES hard to orginize?? Not really if well though out! I have a plan, might not be a good plan but its a plan none the less. Shipping: shiping guitar peices doesnt cost much, and I myself, even though I would not volunteer for any of the work (not enough skills), I would donate $ for shipping costs. Quality of work: This is an issue, my suggestion, do it up like the GOTM contests. Every one that is interested in participating, lays claim to what work they want to do. And everyone gets to vote on who does what, based on skills, and pictures of their past and present work. Materials: Quality materials should be used, but considering the "nature of this beast" instead of a mohagony body, go with alder, as an example. Type of axe: custom guitars that look like something else doesnt make that much money or get noticed. So something original has to be cooked up. Theres enough originaltiy and dementia in this forum, that this should not be a problem. And here's a spot where everyone, can participate, even the amatures. Draw up a rough desighn, and everyone votes. Or make hybrid suggestions, like a cross between an "S model Ibanez and a Les Paul" Flow: once its all said and done, everyone knows who's doing what, and where and why. Break it down like this. Dude thats makes body, ships it to dude that finishes body, he then ships it to dude that hooks up the electronic, and then ships it to Brian for assembly. Dude that makes neck, ships it to dude that does inlay and frets, then ships it to Brian for assembly. This way your looking at maybe 60 to 80 in shipping. Participation: Obviosly not eveyone can participate in the actuall crafting, and hopefully everyone would want the best people for the job. But by voting for everything involved, everyone does get to participate. And I mean voting right down to every little detail. $$$$: the largest of problems, maybe it would be possible to (using as a referance) contact someone that supplies inlay, tell them whats going on, and tell them we'll put their name in big bold letters on the ebay listing, that would be free advertising to millions of people! Plus if the proceedes are going to one of Brians charities, that might snag a discount as well! Alternate materials: As a suggestion, I plan on doing a "tribal" inlay on a guitar body someday. Instead of using shell (very expensive), I'm going to use Duracover (very cheap), the stuff used to cover drum shells which is very pleasing to the eye! I think this would be a killer thing to do!! it would put some light on this webite, and on this forum. Which in the end, is the main purpose for doing this in the first palce. I might have left a couple details out, but these ideas could create more ideas, and maybee get this madness off the ground! Sorry for the long post

I'll just go with the spatula method, too much stuff can go wrong with spray bottles, and it does seem odd that a spray bottle would be used for glue. I was assumeing it was for glue but its probobly meant for the accelerator. Anyways, thanx again guys

youd be surprised!! Not many people have the bank account to buy a whole Jem. But there are lots of people that need parts to fix up their jems for themselves, or for selling it. People wil fight tooth and nail over Jem pick ups, and especially the bridges. I've tried twice now to get just a Jem neck to slap on a plain jane RG body. Failed miserable both times!

That wood is beautifull great job!! If it were me, Id get some of that Stew Mac stain, and stain it light blue or green. With the way that grain looks it would come out awesome. But no matter how you do it, its gonna look sweet!!

I forgot,...after looking on Lone star's site, would either of you recommend the spray bottle they sell along side with the CYA?? It seems a spray bottle would be very usefull for apllying evenly and quickly, as opposed to the little "time enough for spreading" debate you guys had. Or will the Cya destroy or clog a spray bottle??

Thanx Guys!!! The help is very much appreciated!!! I have no problem with the respirators and goggles, they're pretty cheap at home depot. I'll be doing the job in my garage with the door wide open. I'll pick a day when the humidity and temperature is at its lowest (feb or march) Id rather go with the toxic CYA, cuz from other posts in this, and a couple other threads, I get the idea that it does the best for hardening with out discoloration. I do Tai Chi Quong every day for an hour. I follow a vidoe tape made by a Grand Master, so its pretty much free training. If I had to pay every month, I wouldnt be doing it. Someday if I can ever afford it, I'd like to get into Shoalin. Its all about the drunken monkey style baby!!

I never owned one, but I tried a Dime Washburn that had a Dimebucker in it at the music store. As long as your not planning on using it for pretty melodies, you'll like it. It kind of reminded me of a really raw EMG 81. So if your looking for some nasty crunch, go for it.

I hate to bring back an old thread, but I just want to make sure I got the steps correct before I do anything. My plan is to put a spalted top over an Ibanez RG body. So if I understand this correctly I should: 1. remove .25 worth of wood from the top of the RG 2. glue .25 spalted top to the rg, gently steaming the forearm countour, using Gorilla Glue as suggested by westhemann 3. once it's all nice and dry, apply a heafty amount of CYA / hot stuff (?? anyone have a link to this stuff so I dont buy the wrong thing??) 4 sand with fine grit sanpaper until smooth as glass. 5. apply finish, -- any finishes recomended for this type of madness?? If someone could give me a yes or no to my methods, or provide further tips, I would sincerely aprecite it

That is amazing!!!!! What types of shell did you use for these (the whales, and the excalibur) I thought shell only came in 3 or 4 varities.

I used to work in a sighn shop, and we did a lot of work with lexan and acrylic. The most important thing is to use the correct glue. Otherwise it wont bond, or it will fog, or the glue run off will stain the acrylic. Dont ask me what kind of glue we used, cuz I dont remeber. But when you got the stuff on your skin, it felt extremely cold, and was quite toxic

Thats a little harsh, dontcha think?? I've done a lot of buisiness on ebay, both buying and selling. I've never been burned, and have never burned anyone. Its too bad you feel that way, becouse you can get some really good deals on ebay, especially for guitars and parts

Very very true, but in most cases, like around here, a good bass player is really hard to find. So most bands do what they must to get by with out one. Unless your completely utilizing all 8 strings, then that instument is nothing more than a fashion statment! I see alot of guitar palyers that use 7 strings, and the only use 4 of the 7 strings. So whats the point? If you want low tunings and a sick tone, get a baritone.

i have one of those too...with the "sport appearance package"...what a joke! don't worry it breaks in at about 100,000 miles and then it gets a LITTLE more power Mines an 89, and there is nothing sporty looking about the thing. It had 64K miles on it when I bought it, and its got about 85K miles at the moment!
