ScottR
Ain't it fun to see what oil does to wood?! Sometimes I want to slap some on every scrap I have just to see it glow. SR
Andyjr1515
After another 12 coats, that wood will absolutely sparkle
Prostheta
Totally. Slow and methodical.
Chris G
Hey Guys!! I have a couple quick questions about true oil and the finished product. I have done 12 coats (possibly more but I lost count) of the oil finish here is a picture. I think that should be enough. You can see the depth of the clear and it shines really nice. I have been putting a coat a day for the past 2 weeks, since the only time I have to work on it is in the mornings. How long should it set and cure for once the final coat has been applied? Should I buff or polish it once it has cured and what do I need to use?
ScottR
It needs to cure for at least a couple of weeks. The one time I used it I polished it up with micro mesh. SR
Prostheta
Tru-oil is a polymerised finish, meaning that the oil is crosslinking and setting up ("curing") as a chemical reaction rather than through solvent evaporation. The upshot of this is that each layer is distinct from those below and above it; sanding or heavy polishing can cut through these layers, revealing faint witness marks; lines which are the revealed transitions between layers. I've never tried to achieve a high gloss with Tru-oil, however I know that it can be done with a lot of patience and a good eye. Polishing compounds used for car paints such as 3M's Finesse-It do a good job on Tru-Oil, however you still have to be careful of burning through layers, especially on weak points such as sharp edges. The good thing about Tru-oil is that it's very very repairable. I've done a few on my Carl Thompson bass after refining the headstock shape. This was done after finishing, so all I did was to bring it back through the grits and re-apply Tru-oil, blending it out into the rest of the headstock. Flawless. In that respect, you can develop your feel for the stuff. It's great that way. If you screw up, take a breather and simply build the oil back up. It'll work with you. Chris G
Thank you everyone of tips and advice!! Here is the final progress post. So I thought doing a true oil finish would be faster then using Nitro, but I was wrong. I was not looking for a full gloss, but just enough shine to make the color and grain pop. I ended up with 12 coats of true oil and 1-2 weeks of cure. Here are some pictures. Hardware getting installed. After I got everything installed I weighed it and it was what I expected. Here it is all done. I have been done for a few weeks now, but the weather has been bad the past few weeks and I wanted to get some shots outside. ScottR
It does look good! It also looks at home in the Tennessee countryside. Nice pics and enjoy playing that thing. Something about it just looks like it sounds great.....like a full blooded Les Paul. SR

madhattr88
You can polish with 3M Finesse-It II.  It will remove most of the scratches and wiping marks from the tru-oil. Just do it pretty lightly.

Thanks Muzz! I was trying to go for a vintage age look. All the parts are used Gibson for a worn look and to save money. The pickups are the aged GFS old school..  26 minutes ago, madhattr88 said: You can polish with 3M Finesse-It II.  It will remove most of the scratches and wiping marks from the tru-oil. Just do it pretty lightly. Prostheta
Sounds great! Plenty of the character that you'd expect from a LP is there. Great work!

I was a bit queasy when I paid for it. since I could not find one like it in the area to try out. It was not too bad on the price for and its in great used condition. This should help me complete my next build a tad faster. A friend gave it to me who made boats in the past. He is not into woodworking anymore and just moved and no place to store it. I told him it will have a good home and get lots of use! Working on my new workshop and mass cleaning of the garage to make room for this beast.
