backsidetailslide
heyhey! im a 16 year old bass player and lately ive had a nice project on my hands. i decided to build my own devastator bass (the bass jerry only from the misfits handmade) this is my first build and ive been working on it for a while. I am currently waiting to receive my neck from warmoth. here are some pictures; let me know what you think!!! what im trying to build, well make my own version of rough cutout, im using alder as my wood http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...3305AA-copy.jpg routered edges http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...3649AA-copy.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...3700AA-copy.jpg now jerry only did not have any volume or tone knobs, i like to have those so i decided to hide them. i constructed a cover for my electronics but also encorperated a strat jack plate. the cover is on the back of the guitar so is the jack therefor keeping the front of the bass clean. the knobs are hidden in the bass, inside a pocket that is kept open.. also on the back.. youll see what i mean http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...2245AA-copy.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...2256AA-copy.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...4853AA-copy.jpg now a little idea a friend gave me. he noticed that the knobs were being held by clear plexiglass so if i put some lights in the electronic cavity the pocket for the knobs would light up!! here i took a picture using a quick setup of leds and a battery pack. if anyone knows how to wire the lights so they come on when i plug the jack in, it would be nice to let me know how to do this. here is a pic of the idea http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...3455AA-copy.jpg here is the badass bridge and pickups http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...5420AA-copy.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...5440AA-copy.jpg booooooooyah cant wait to have it finished! let me know what you all think ONLY ONE PIC PER POST ALLOWED Edited February 15, 2006 by Maiden69
~john~
It looks great, i love the shap.have you started the neck yet? You need to change them pictures to links, one picture per post as the rules say.
Lietuvis
You've come up with some very original ideas for the controls... good work! I like extreme shapes as well... Just one question... why is the neck pocket so long? Will you be cutting it down? Edited February 15, 2006 by Lietuvis
Marzocchi705
Nice looking bass, i realy like the solution you came up with for hiding the knobs, but still letting them be fully useable. I asume you left the neck pocked part so long so you can cut it down to final size when you actually have the neck in hand?
Nitefly SA
that thing is insane, the bridge describes it all....badass

skibum5545
I really like the LED idea. The wiring you'd want to get them to turn on is really very simple. Instead of using a mono jack with the strat jackplate, which only has contacts for tip and shaft, use a stereo jack, which has contacts for tip and 2 separate shaft contacts. Wire your pickups as you normally would, ignoring one of the shaft contacts entirely. Now, for the LED's: solder a wire to one of the shaft contacts, through your battery box (make sure you get your voltage and resistance worked out in advance; it varies depending on your LED type and color, but spec sheets are available), through your LEDs, and back to the other shaft contact. At this point, your circuit is incomplete and will do nothing. However, when you insert the cable, the shaft, being a mono cable, will complete the circuit and turn on your LED's. I don't think this will interfere with your pickups, but I could be wrong-- wait for confirmation before going through with this. Anyway, very cool bass, and I will definitely follow your progress. Primal
Pretty cool bass. The only problem I see with it is that it would probably have been easier to route the neck pocket if you hadn't cut the body out. But, we've all been impatient, so I think we can all understand... Not my style of bass, but pretty kickass for a newbie!
deadmike
aawww that is awesome!!!!!! im completely jealous, i was really hoping to build a devestator to go with my anni, but youve beaten me to it! the shape is really spot on and looks just like jerry's. i wouldnt have bothered with the pots, thats just me though, i mean, how much will you really use them? for me, having that higher tone and volume is worth the small walk over to the amp. completetly kick ass, im going to use all your pictures when i come to build mine. are you building a neck or buying one? if you find a good skull to put on the headstock do let us know where you got it! Nitefly SA
are you going to saw the fretboard diagonally at the end like jerry has it?
backsidetailslide
i want to... is there a special way to do this? well i mean, is ther a special way to cut throught the frets or should i hack saw it?
~john~
Just look at the picture of the origional and cut yours at the same places, you can tell what line to cut along by working out what fret the cut starts and ends at, then just fret it as normal. Nitefly SA
i think you could just hack saw it, use a miter box (i think thats what is called) to guide your cuts, and also, file down the fret edges afterward, because those SOB's will be sharp
deadmike
on the original its a wavy line, not just a straight cut. but who would know? if you were careful enough i reckon it could be done.

Druss
I can't wait to see some more progress on this bass. Keeping the front of the bass clean is a nice touch I might try that when I build my bass.

backsidetailslide
sorry about the other thread alright everybody, its progress time! so ive got my neck bolted on, lights wired, bridge mounted! its starting to look like a bass guitar! http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...0424AA-copy.jpg a picture of the back shows that i needed to use ferrules instead of a plate to bolt the neck on, i also need to trim and finish the mortise there so ignore the extra wood/uglyness. you can also see the knobs and electronics compartment. http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...0438AA-copy.jpg lights on http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...0547AA-copy.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...0612AA-copy.jpg hmm the string action is really high, im gonna have to fix this.. http://usera.imagecave.com/backsidetailsli...0627AA-copy.jpg ________________________________________________ alright so today i actually had my wisdom teeth removed and currently cant feel my tongue or lips. my mouth is full of bloody gauze and im on tylenol 3's but, im feeling better than i expected and have an excuse not to go to work. soo i have lots more time to work on this beast! what i have left is:Fix action by shimming mortiseClean up mortiseRoute pickup cavitiesDrill channels for wiresSheild all electronic compartmets with special paintFinal sandMask off fretboard, mortise and cavitiesGet this beast prepped and paintedWire pickups, ground, ect..Put on strings and set antonation action etc.Play it at the battle of the bands The list may seem long but it isnt, i can get most of it done in one good day. ill keep you all posted now lets hear some feedback! sorry about the other thread OK I THINK THAT I GOT IT FIXED!
