Hondo H-1 Restoration

Recommended Posts

Hi all this is my first post

I have started restoring my old guitar the Hondo H-1.

I have already sanded the guitar and sprayed on the primer.

Here are some pictures of my progress thus far.

I have a question about painting.

I have already bought all the paint from an Auto paint shop who gave me lots of advice.

Just like to know if I am doing it in the correct order.

1) Primer wait for it to dry and then sand. What grit sand should i use ??

2) Then spray on the color.

3) Then spray on the laquer. and then sand again with very fine sandpaper and then re laquer?

Does this sound right ??

Thanks

I'm too lazy to help with finishing, but it seems you have the general gist of things, all i really wanted to say is that your guitar is ugly...

I'm sure it's beautiful on the inside...

Well thanks for your comments rgman I think !!!

It may be ugly to you, but i like aggressive looking guitars and after im done with it, hopefully it will look alot better

This is an old guitar that has never had a set of strings on it since I bought the guitar. Once its done I'm hoping it wil look out of this world and will play nice, as I have bought all new hardware for it.

I paid $40 for this guitar about 15 yrs ago, and promised that id make a project out of it and im finally starting.

Man I procrastinate.......

Thanks for your kind welcome Vinny.

Il be sure and post back when i have progressed more..

That's some freakin' geetar! I'll be willing to give those decals you had on there a good home! :D

ahahaha they were stickers not decals and were not going to come off so I sanded them into oblivion :D

Yeah those dean guitars are awesome, mine wont turn out like that. This is just a project for me, I doubt it will be that good, but fingers crossed..

I have just finished the purple coat.

ooooh - its starting to appeal now its purple!!

I would be tempted to modify the headstock by cutting of the lower barb so it only had a spike on the upper edge- i think it would make it a little more streamlined

Yeah i hear ya, but its not gonna happen. The thing is painted and I have no expertise in cutting wood and no equipment to do it. Plus im sure Id fark it up

I just got some of the gold hardware in from www.ibanezrules.com and looking for more.

I need a gold tremelo non floating, and a gold nut i think its called bridge nut thingo. at the base of the headstock that holds the strings in place....

I need some help. The painting has finished the color looks great but the clear coat of laquer, doesn't seem to have that smooth finish im after..Like my ibanez has. Do i need to buff it or polish it.

Its seems a little ruff. Do i need more clear laquer

How many layers do I need ?

any help would be great !!!

i'd do probably a minimum of 5 coats of clear lacquer, if not more... you're gonna be wet sanding and buffing/polishing it for sure. need to sand it flat with 600 after all is said and done and it sits for ~2 weeks to cure, then you'll buff and polish it, then i'd sand it again with 1000, and buff and polish it... time consuming, but oh so worth it.

Just an update for anyone who is following my progress

and for those who have helped me out thus far thanks for your helpfull information and when its time to do my 2nd restoration, I think it will turn out even better.

here are some update pics.

I wet-sanded, then used a cutting compound, then polished it and it seems ready for hardware and wiring etc....

Its not a pro finish but I have learned many mistakes so the next one should get better.

Well as much as it seems like a good Idea,

I don't have the time to re do over, and I dont have the place.

My parents garage was used for 2 weeks, and they dont want more spray painting going on in there and My apartment is no place for spraying a guitar.

So it aint gona happen.

maybe in the future Il redo it or a whole new project.
