ngaa
Okay so the thought stuck me tonight.. I'm going to build a guitar using the parts I used for a guitar I made before. The specs are; -Neck-Thru design -5pc neck (maple and black walnut) -mahogany body wings -Purpleheart fretboard -25.5" scale length -24 frets (jumbo) -Black hardware -Schaller tremolo system (floyd rose) -Two humbuckers and a single coil in the middle. -Volume and Tone pots -5 way switch - Most likely the finish will be natural, maybe with a clear coat depending on if I like it without the clear on it. Oh and the shape is going to be of an Ibanez RGT220A prestige. And the reason I'm rebuilding is because I am not satisfied with the one I built last year, hopefully this one will turn out better. Anyways, I'll report tomorrow with whatever I get done. And I'll try to post some pictures of the build progress. ngaa
Okay got a little work done today. (sorry for the horrible quality, it was taken with my phone).. Template Rough cut http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...ar/guitar01.jpg Nice piece of mahogany (not planed yet) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...ar/guitar02.jpg the body wood is all thickness planed and I just have to carve the shape out for the body. Next time I can work on it will probably be Wednesday, so I'll have more for you then. (also, how do I construct 5 piece necks for a neck-thru design?) eg, how thick, wide, and long should it be for a normal 6 string 25.5" scale guitar. And I will get pictures as well (got a camera, not my shitty phone now ) But for now, I leave you with some pictures. I might be using the walnut for my fretboard, and I might use it for some 7/8" strips in the neck. ngaa
An update today! I planed and jointed a nice piece of brazilian walnut for the fretboard (monday I will thickness it so I can cut it shorter and thinner for a fretboard (I'll try to get the straightest grain on there I can.) The blank http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/Guitar014.jpg A bit closer http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/Guitar015.jpg Also, I got all the wood I need for my neck, some nice straight pieces of maple and walnut. on monday I will also thickness all of the pieces and then glue them together. All of the wood so far (excluding neck woods) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/Guitar016.jpg (^ that picture includes the mahogany thickness planed, the body template (almost done), and the big fretboard blank with a rosewood board ontop.) Anyways, I probably wont be working on this until monday. So until then, just keep the posts coming. I can use all the help I can get. ngaa
Some progress. Body wings rough cut, fretboard is read to be slotted, and then tapered. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/Guitar024.jpg Edited October 19, 2007 by ngaa
ngaa
Some progress to report. I've been working on this thing quite a bit, and I have to say it's turning out good so far. Here is a mock-up with some parts. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/guitar026.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/lo...r/guitar027.jpg The bridge is a little far back in these shots, but that's cause my friend put it there and we had to go pretty quickly. Anyways, since those pictures I've worked on the body a lot and it's almost at the final shape now. That will most likely be done on monday, and then I will round the back, and MAYBE glue the wings to the neck. probably not though. ngaa
I have a question about the neck. the neck is at the final width right now, (1-3/4") and when I put the fretboard on there wont be any wood sticking up from under the fretboard, will this cause any problems later? or will I just have to set the pickups a little lower than usual. Here is a diagram if you don't understand what I'm saying.
RGman
Should be ok if the bridge is recessed.
ngaa
oh, okay thanks rgman, I'm happy this wont cause a problem haha.
RGman
One of my friends did the same thing when we were in school, his neckthru had no neck angle or rise, but having the bridge recessed worked out fine.
ngaa
will it work fine with a schaller floyd rose? or only with a TOM bridge.
