carousel182
I got bored of not having any builds going on so I decided to start on an SG. I'm pretty much building a standard SG with a curly spanish cedar top curly maple back and a walnut pinstripe in the middle to contrast the two and to add a cool effect with the bevels. It's gonna have a set neck (first time I'm gonna be doing a set neck) and rosewood fingerboard. This one is gonna be a righty (second righty I'll have built.) It's definitely gonna have a true oil finish because 1) lI like the look of tru oil. 2) I want an oil finish to show off the grain 3) I want to try something new. bonus) Its not gonna be as hard to apply as lacquer. I most likely will be selling this thing when it's finished on ebay or to someone locally. Anyway here are some pics of the woods. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00384.jpg

I just did this today. Also I have a question, is the one pic per post rule gone, I've seen a lot of threads recently with more than one pic per post. If it's not gone ill edit this post. Geo
On the subject of Tru-oil... you can buy it straight from the manufacturer at a much cheaper unit price. Just passing it along.
carousel182
thanks for the tip, who's the manufacturer of the tru oil you buy and what is the site?
Geo
Here's the page where I bought it. If you're not in the States, it might be more of a hassle. I bought the 32oz and it was about $23 with shipping... much better than 3oz for $8.10 from LMI! http://www.birchwoodcasey.com/sport/index.html (click on wood finishing) I just noticed you joined the day after I did! carousel182
heh thats pretty funny. I think I joined this site like midway through my first build if I remember correctly. Thats a pretty good deal I'm definitely gonna order that. I've never really seen tru oil besides in pictures on this site, how does it feel? carousel182
To seal the deal on the SG shape I cut it out (I don't think I mentioned on this forum I was considering making it a LP.)
carousel182
neck lams not glued together yet. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st.../Picture001.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st.../Picture003.jpg shape routed and sanded. Geo
Thats a pretty good deal I'm definitely gonna order that. I've never really seen tru oil besides in pictures on this site, how does it feel? It feels far, far superior to what I used on other projects. I used to use a mix of linseed oil, miniwax gloss and turpentine. This stuff is fabulous and the depth it brings out of boring wood is incredible! One more random tip... if you have an oily wood like cocobolo: seal it with shellac first. Tru-oil doesn't take to cocobolo very well. carousel182
Thanks for the tips, I glued the blanks together and ordered all of the parts. I ordered nickel parts because I like the look with the spanish cedar top. I'm still debating on weather or not i should use a pickguard, I kind of want to show off the wood. WezV
looking damn hot - some nce sharp SG bevels are really going to bring that to life if you do a pickguard make it the small style and keep it simple, it seems a shame to cover the wood but i can imagine the PG would look great so i would make one anyway and then try to decide afterwards
carousel182
^ That was my plan actually. I'm not going to do the standard SG routes so that I have the option of choosing no pickguard at the end. This is a hard choice. I think it would look a little bland without a pickguard, but with a pickguard I'd be covering up wood.
Geo
A small white pickguard would be cool (assuming the final color of the guitar will be similar to the natural color of the wood). If you use the small SG pickguard, you won't really cover that much wood. I think it's worth it if it ties the guitar together.
carousel182
ahh okay, definitely agree with that. I think I'll go with a small white pickguard (i'll cut black and white out and see what looks best.)

foil1more
Ah, I see you have a set of the golden age humbuckers. Have you used them before? How do they sound?
!WOOD!!
That is some fine looking lumber. How soft is the cedar?I would be terrified not to put a pickguard on it. Looking Fantastic!!
carousel182
It's not cedar actually, It's spanish cedar which is basically a species of mahogany.. I've used golden age humbuckers 3 times before, they sound great, and they are good value.
Cam
with the pickguard why don't you make a nice clear one out of acrylic? It will protect the guitar but you will still be able to see the wood underneath!
carousel182
I've had absolutely no time recently to even start on this, hopefully I will have enough time next month to get this finished up

carousel182
I kind of dropped this build for a while but now I'm starting it up again. I wasn't really happy with the old neck for some reason so i decided to go with a birdseye neck.. right now im just gluing the scarf so no picks yet, but when i get it cut out ill post some. carousel182
Finally some progress to post.. i scarfed the neck cut it out and glued the fretboard on... i also made a truss rod cover cavity out of some leftover mop and cut out the 21st fret inlay which is yet to be inlayed. pics http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0806.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0809.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0810.jpg
