IPA or death Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 I've been looking at some Rickenbacker inlays and I really would love to have that look in my next build. Have any of you guys ever done this and what advice could you give? Here is what I'm talking about Quote
IPA or death Posted February 25, 2011 Author Report Posted February 25, 2011 Some of the abalam stuff looks pretty good but it's a different look than the crushed mop in the Rics. Maybe the pics aren't clear enough. Quote
pariah223 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 its funny, i just saw this on a website the other day and thought to myself "hm, never saw this before". They dont seem to have pearl but its still something. http://www.cookwoods.com/Mineral%20page.htm Quote
kpcrash Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Interesting thread on how this guy used that stuff - http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f57/inlaying-crushed-turquoise-tutorial-499230/ Quote
IPA or death Posted February 26, 2011 Author Report Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) I found some of the same stuff I'm looking for in pre-made laminate sheets at a knife handle website but it was outrageously expensive. Then I found the flakes at a custom fingernail materials site and ordered some. I guess I'll give it a try and post my results in case anyone wants to try in the future. I'll try it out on some scrap to see if it's going to work. Worth a try I guess. Thanks for the responses. And Crash, that was a cool idea that guy had with the bass. WezV Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 i would be tempted to make blanks to inlay rather than pour the chips into the route before adding glue pour the shards and some clear epoxy onto a flat non-stick surface like some waxed glass or silicone sheet - possibly make a square mold to phelp - then cut the inlays out of the resulting sheet it will look a lot cleaner than just pouring them in Quote

I hadn't thought of that . BTW, I still can't imagine how this product can be used for fingernails, can you? Seems like it would come out like lizard scales or something. Quote

verhoevenc Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 Honestly, do some inlay and you'll end up with PLENTY of MOP scraps that you can crush and mix and make blanks with. As for that Ric thread... they are routing MAD deep in those fretboards to do that?! Dunno if I like that... Chris Quote
