Guest Teal Green Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 I'm not a lawyer but... Re-issue instruments are pretty much all that interest me so I pay for real Fender and Gibson and other historically ''correct'' instruments (USUALLY!) with historically correct headstocks ie. Epiphone Casino, Flying-V, Epiphone Texan etc. are all historically acceptable to me. I MUST have the ''real'' head stock (and body shape!) or it drives me crazy! (maybe I'm crazy anyway!). I thought I was safe with ''standardized'' fully legal BODY shapes neck pockets notwithstanding. Like it was pretty essential that the guys at Phantom Guitar Inc. of Oregon take Korg or whomever lics. Vox to court to free up the use of the (teardrop-shaped) Mark 3,4,6,9 and 12 likewise the ''coffin-shaped'' Vox ''Phantoms''. The Phantom Guitar guys were adamant when interviewed in 'Vintage Guitar' that BODY SHAPES CANNOT BE PATENTED!! This explains why U.S. makers are free to make PILES of Fender and Gibson BODY SHAPES. It's the HEAD STOCKS that are another matter! Japan notwithstanding. Look at an early early Phantom (Oregon) guitar (if you can find one!) Their ''Teardrop''and ''Coffin''(?) models are real and historic Vox BODY shapes. It's the head stocks that were another matter. Phantom Guitars of Oregon finally wangled the use of ''Vox'' headstock shapes too (eventually)... I always (blindly) bought guitar bodies (Strat-like, Tele-like etc. bodies) off the internet sight unseen. I was blindly secure in the knowledge that I would get a reasonably close approximation of a Fender Guitar body at least. That was until I ordered an aftermarket (finished) tele body from an aftermarket ebay store/supplier from Oregon who shall remain nameless (Dragon Fire) and they sent me a crude clunky and misshapen finished piece of wood that was roughly ''tele-shaped''. When I contacted them they claimed that ''Fender sues everybody...'' and the ''only way for us (them) to stay in business is to sell these (crude, misshapen over-sized) imitation tele-like bodies.'' That's bullshit. Further they informed me that they ''are not in the business of taking returns even if a customer would pay both shipping cost and even a re-stocking fee''. Nope no way. I don't like to be shined on by anybody. I gave them a (rare for me) lousy ebay seller rating that BTW they SHRIEKED to me about! I then took the tele-shaped slab of wood out to my workshop, laid my ''real'' (Fender) tele on top of it and TRACED out what I was satisfied was an ACCURATE TELE SHAPE! I then took a wood rasp to the over-sized and clunky Dragon Fire imitation ''tele''-like slab of wood... Needless to say the re-shaping (not to mention the refinishing) of the Dragon Fire abomination significantly delayed assembly of my kit guitar and with ANY aftermarket company free to make EXACT guitar BODIES their is no excuse for a sloppy guitar BODY such as you will get from Dragon Fire. So buy lic. brand names: Fender, Gibson, Allparts WD Mighty Mite Warmoth yes even Phantom! Otherwise be bullshitted by any little guitar troll selling their wares on the ''instronet'' who should by rights be selling plumbing supplies or working at Home Depot...
Muzz Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 I think it is a horses for courses thing, I have a different outlook, I love oversize guitars, I am not a small guy and a lot of standard size guitars feel like toys to me. I had a look at the website and the bodies look great, good shapes, lovely colours, what was wrong with yours? was it just the size?
westhemann Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Yeah,I would like to see a picture of the offensive body, because at the bargain basement price of $130 for a translucent finished body,or $70 for natural,I tend to think that they may be offering good quality for the price. Of course it is quite possible that the pics on their site don't represent the actual product. But it seems as if these days some people are expecting perfection in the product no matter the price... I ordered a Warmoth neck once...still have it.It's overall a good product, but the tuner holes were drilled for a non standard size of tuners, and the locking nut holes were drilled slightly off center(about .5 mm).And that neck cost me almost $400. Any time you dog a supplier, you should have more proof than just your words, because you are posting this in an only vaguely related pinned topic so that it will stay visible whether it should or not. Because of this,I am moving this into a different topic. It doesn't really belong where you put it.
Guest Teal Green Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Hello! First let me say sincerely Thank you for your replies to my comments and thank you for taking the time to reply! I find them informative! Also thank you too to our webmaster for fielding my rant about DF guitar(tele) bodies and moving this to a different place/topic it's PG's site and they certainly have the right to do it! Put it under the ''bitching and complaining'' heading I guess! Wherever you move it to even below the fold, it won't make my point any less valid... I especially found valid the business of being a big guy and some times prefer-ing an oversize guitar body but my position is that because of free patent laws for guitar bodies (since forever) NOBODY should have to receive an ARBITRARILY oversize or let's face it clunky tele-esque slab of wood online (unless they want it) even if these bodies are such a wonderful price... There is no need for it: not in the age of computerized routing am I wrong? There is NO reason that a supplier should have to buy then sell over-sized crude tele-type bodies that require a wood rasp to make them resemble a telecaster guitar! I guess I should be glad these bodies are OVER and not UNDER-SIZED! You can't put the wood back.I don't think you can?!!? I am also a big guy myself (6'3'' and mad mad overweight!). If Dragon Fire wants to sell over-sized and clunky tele bodies (size 13 Extra wide? Is THAT what you're looking for in a tele body size?) They should ADVERTISE them as ''Tele Bodies for the big guy''. The ONLY reason that Dragon Fire sells their outrageous (atrocious!) bodies is because of the distinct possibility that they ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAIL CAN'T GET PROPER BODIES AND THEN KEEP IT TO THEMSELVES!!! Further, when I asked to return my DF body they told me to go pound sand it's not their return policy. To be fair their ebay ad clearly showed their NO RETURN policy so hey, rookie mistake. If I was low enough to sell these crude (I can't get away from that word) bodies sight unseen I would make sure that I had a ''NO RETURN'' policy too! I wish everything in guitar parts/buying/building was all sweetness and light but it's not (just look at the smoke coming out of my ears! Not very sweet or light! Maybe not too bright either? (I'm sure you'll let me know!). As far as ''just your (my) words as evidence'' Evidence? What is this the Scopes Monkey Trial? What evidence do you ACTUALLY need to be persuaded? What evidence do I need to show you that my sad little guitar story is true? I offer my tale of woe as just a humble guitar tinkerer, just a little fuzzball who needed a (I'll admit cheap) ''tele'' body for a project for a friend. I came across ''Dragon Fire'' your friend and mine on ebay. I bought one of their shiny new planks and IMO Dragon Fire saw me coming and stung me. That's all. You got a War. neck for $400? (hey that's a MAN'S neck!) and you couldn't put Klusons or some more fetishistic tuners on it? Your prefer-ed make of tuners couldn't be installed? Apples and Oranges! I'll bet Warmoth would have taken your $400 neck (or $8 neck plate!) back if you were unhappy with it in the slightest...but then Warmoth is a REPUTABLE company Dragon Fire IS NOT in my experience. Dragon Fire protects and insulates themselves carefully while selling iffy stuff with their strict ''NO RETURN'' rules. As far as perfection, I'm old (very old!) enough to know that one should strive for ''EXCELLENCE and not PERFECTION'' I try not to let perfectionism tangle my line too much. You? As The Stones said ''Can You Walk on Water?'' (Cool lost Stones album! Serious!Look it up!). As far as ''dogging'' Dragon Fire? I'll cop to it but I've paid a certain amount of dues with these bullshitters from the North West and they deserve it. Nobody likes to be lied to by ignorant shysters, or maybe ''some people'' do I don't know... After all it happens all the time everyday in our society, why not in the gentleman's (and lady's) world of pure guitar dedication and love? I took the ''BARGAIN BASEMENT'' PLUNGE with Dragon Fire that's D-R-A-G-O-N F-I-R-E from O-R-E-G-O-N and I'm just sayin' IMO they manhandled me not a little with their game and I'm a little pissed... They got a (VERY rare) poor seller rating from me on ebay and now looka here... a blog about body shapes. So let me sharpen my teeth on DF just a little it may raise the standards of aftermarket guitar parts, bodies anyway... If I've planted even the tiniest seed of doubt about the accuracy of a DF body then I suppose that's enough. Watch out when you go down this road children. Let the buyer beware. Take nothing for granted and keep a wood rasp handy because if you deal with DF for a tele body in my experience you may very well need it... Roll up the pant legs, it's too late to save the shoes... Very sincerely, Your humble servant, Teal Green
Narcissism Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Hi teal, I work for home depot, and I'm a little offended. While I haven't built the most amazing instruments, I have built a rhoads copy. You can check it out in my signature if you want. I built it to fit my old ibanez neck. While I did build that guitar, I will put it under a category of sub-par, as I attempted to use hand tools on all the routing cavities. The end result is a pretty nice looking instrument with a lot of hidden mistakes. My point is the final picture I have in the thread. I have it hanging next to a bunch of other Jackson Vs that I was copying.
Guest Teal Green Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Hello Narcissism- Your point is well taken and I'm sincerely sorry the ''Home Depot'' remark offended a skilled guitar man. I'm sorry that a reasonable chap like yourself works at HD! IMO you're probably wasted there. I knew somebody would get around to addressing the HD remark...This may be getting a little far afield but I think I can own it. I'm a big overweight slob but even I know that McDonald's (in general) bad for you... I think that Home Depot is the McDonald's of building supplies. So let me qualify my remark about Home Depot by saying that......I DON'T LIKE HOME DEPOT!!! I don't shop there. It's STILL possible to not have to shop there in my little neck of the woods. I go miles out of my way to not have to shop there and I'm a woodworker/carpenter/building contractor/guitar tinkerer too! Sometimes it's like cutting off my nose to spite my face...my beautiful face! But see pretty soon there won't be any other builder's supply place to go to and HD will likely negotiate with Lowe's to be the only game in (everybody's) town and that's bad...So dig my beat: By sheer luck(?) my town has several independent hardware, paint, plumbing and electrical supply dealers, nurseries and MOST fortunate a small independent lumber yard (for the time being anyway!). All those folks that you see ''nesting'' at HD evenings and weekends... searching for just the right window treatment or light fixture with their color swatches have no clue that if they continue to take their $ to Home Depot, then soon(?)... like water seeking it's own level, like sand through the hourglass we'll all have to shop at ''big block''places like HD FOREVERMORE! They snuff small towns dead! No foolin'! I don't like their overall vision for the future: It's called ''blight''. Not to sound overly paranoid but in addition to all this fun stuff, as time goes by once HD and yes ''Lowe's'' and other BB retailers have a lock on their smaller locations/towns. Big blocks in general will be free to close stores, consolidate their locations and funnel/force their customers to come from far and wide to buy anything the a mega MEGA store feels like selling to them at whatever prices they want to charge.....search your feelings Luke, you know it to be true.... I'm not saying big blocks should be banned, If you don't like them then DON'T SHOP THERE! I don't like Home Depot so I don't shop there, or Walmart or Target or Lowe's either. I just don't like them and it's my privilege to go someplace else at least for the time being! We ARE stuck with BestBuy tho cause I think we can say that B.Buy and the like killed mom and pop consumer electronics a long time back. You ''Narcissus'' are an employee of Home Depot right? I mean you took the time to take me to school about it and let everybody on this blog know that you work at HD but that you've got it on the ball building some guitars too and NOT with stone tools either! Still you must concede that you don't claim to be a guitar parts dealer. Wellllll Ken Aguilar, owner and operator of TNT/Dragonfire Guitars in Oregon CERTAINLY DOES and he can get QUITE testy about it too! If he hears about this he will perform a verbal beatdown on me... Kenny belongs at Home Depot or any neighborhood hardware store where he will no longer be in a position to **** up his customer's guitar projects by hawking lousy guitar parts, sellin' 'em to ya and refusing to take 'em back when they don't fit and then lying and whining about it. He wouldn't be able to get away with that at Home Depot or any other business would he? Kenny has carved out a niche for himself in the high stakes world of guitar parts retail in (high) volume. He acts like he's performing a public service doing it too. Why he chose to burden us with this endeavor I don't know. You could put Kenny in the paint or electrical or plumbing department of any builder's supply retailer where he won't be able to damage anybody's guitar projects with his crappy parts and spread his ill will in the online guitar parts and building community (kinda like I'm doing now I guess!).I'm just taking the bread out of Kenny's children's mouths... But I'm doing this for my health? Kenny would call me an ingrate a troublemaker and ''NOT COOL!!'' It used to be said in Hollywood that Montgomery Clift would have been much happier as owner and operator of a small hardware store in small town America rather than the bitter movie star that he became... So let me say again: ''you don't want to be bullshitted by a guitar parts troll who by rights should be selling plumbing supplies or working at Home Depot''I stand by what I said. Anybody got anything they want to say about it? Further I paid my dues with Ken Aguilar/TNT/Dragon Fire Inc. when I bought one of his over-sized guitar bodies and then had to lump it. What goes around comes around. It's a bi-atch... I don't contact Home Depot or Republic Plumbing Supply when I'm trying to fix a guitar (you wouldn't either). I need a serious guitar parts dealer. I need a guitar parts dealer who isn't working a short con on me and the rest of his customers. You don't have to prove anything to me or anybody else ''Narcissus'', I'm sure your Jackson copies are cool. As a matter of fact I was just about to check them out now... ''If you don't have anything nice to say then come sit by me'' -D.Parker Faithfully, The Big Teal
Tim37 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 so you recieved a body that is perfectly functional and your not happy because it doesnt match your fender. um what year did DF base its body off of even fender bodies varie from year to year as they changed tooling and made mods to acomidate there players. if you wanted a fender body why didnt you just pick up one off ebay you could have gotten a mim fender tele body for less than you paid for your DF.
Guest Teal Green Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Tim- Check your facts...Fender did no such thing... And as for finding a MIM body on ebay for less than a DF body? THAT is pure fairyland stuff...Where have you been? Also use a dictionary! T
VesQ Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 So what ? If a body shape is not patented, that doesn´t mean that every single manufacturer should make exact replicas for some guy who want´s to buy his guitars blindfolded.
Workingman Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Headstocks are not patented they are trademarked.
Dean Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 I almost cried reading this story, you didn't get what you thought you bought.Sight unseen to top it off,Really. Is the world coming to a end?Next time you are in dought about a item you want to buy ,pick up a phone or send a e-mail and ask some questions,it has always been buyer beware. We all have stories of disappointment dealing with vendors, live and learn. It is ok to complain ,but we get it after the first sentence.Good luck in the future.

THAT is pure fairyland stuff...Where have you been? Also use a dictionary! Teal, Fender bodies have changed over the years. Check your guitars. You can find gold for cheap on evilbay... It's why people shop there. I don't think tim's grammar is the point of his post. He only offered preventative solutions to your problem for the future.

Guest Teal Green Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 OKAAAAAAAY Everybody... This is like banging my head against a WALL!!!! BANG!! BANG!! BANG!! Get it? You're entitled to your own opinion but you are NOT entitled to your own facts...Get it? There is far FAR too TOO much guitar urban mythology being flung around on this particular blog. If you truly believe that good/cool guitars can be relied upon to always just flow together serendipitously (like magic), then clearly we better not have lunch... But everybody and anybody who takes the time to apply themselves to building up a guitar is ACES(!) in my book. How about your book? I'm sure you'll be gratified to know that I give them ALL an automatic A+ not for spelling but for wanting their instruments, amplifiers and their stomp boxes to be all that they can be. I want to hear from EVERYBODY at every experience level about what they've got going on on their kitchen tables and workbenches at home, their experiences with finishes, woods and parts. Also with ebay, dealers and shipping and the like. You can really learn TONS of guitar stuff from ANYBODY. If you don't want to really discuss it. If you just want to be a born contrary-ian If you don't want to come out and play on this Project Guitar blog. If you want to take your ball and bat and go home then I wish you would. If you don't like the manner and style that I express my great GREAT love of guitars then you can stuff it...This whole THING is getting positively LILLILIPUTIAN! (petty, small-minded,ignorant)... Pity me... I'm sitting here in my bathrobe in my mother's basement,no girlfriend, ugly, un-attractive, unemployed and overweight (later I'm going to look at internet porn and masturbate). All I have at the time being is my cd collection, my guitars, my treasured 1964 (JMI) Vox AC30 and you all, ''the nice people out there in the darkness...'' (Gloria Swanson ''Sunset Boulevard''). So give me a break with all this s***... Fighting amongst ourselves is what the MAN wants us to do! You dig? Right? So why don't we start over and be friends okay? How does that sound? Visit me sometime and leave me some comments in my mailbox, I'm just a guy. I'm Teal Green, who are you? I look forward to hearing from you! masterblastor Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 (edited) I would buy a router and some wood. You could have made your own tele body in the time it took someone to ship one to you. You probably could have made one in the time you spent complaining on here. You're a woodworker, right? Like it or not you should have checked the return policy. Tim37 Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Yeah i probably do sound a little crusty that probably comes form never having the luxury of sitting in my parents basement getting stoned and wacking off all day.

Guest Teal Green Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Hello everyone! There's a couple hundred people watching this blog and I'm hearing from 6-7 responders...Kenny, is it you performing a damage control beatdown? If it is only you attacking me at this PG 'blogplace' then welcome Kenny! Kenny is all OVER 'Harmony Central' why not here too? Nah! I'm just paranoid(?). I did really hit a nerve on this ''blog''. I now realize that some guys are 'very' sensitive about their 'instruments'. It must be a phallic-Freudian thing... So I think I'd better say goodbye somewhere in this, my final LONNNNNNGGGGG post. I'll leave you kids at this corner of the PG blogsite. (I like the sound of the word blog, and blogging and being a blogger. It sounds more manly than just leaving things on the ''forum''. So kill me ! I will go someplace/anyplace else if you want me gone and no longer available 'to kick around anymore...'I will go someplace where I can ''impress'' somebody with my sheer love of guitars (the phallic thing?). I will go somewhere where ordinary folks like myself want to talk about guitars and amplifiers and the 'war stories that come with them! I could tell you some stories! I've got a lot of stories, maybe you could glean something from them! I want to glean stuff from your war stories! I want to learn from them... I've been circling the toilet bowl of rock and roll, whacking off in the Rock and Roll toilet for a long (LONG!) time! I'm just a 6'3''over-aged, overweight un-attractive and (now) self-employed fuzzball with manic depression. I'm still jacking off and taking Ritalin (with an Rx tho). I'm not smoking pot (I've never actually smoked pot...). I'm Just blowing (blowing?) around in this big PG blogsite! Keep reading my stuff if it gives you something to snarl and snap about. At least I got a reaction from you, what did you give me? Nothing but aggravation and heartache ''I gave you the diamonds/you give me disease''-R.Stones (Exile on Main St.). I listed my guitar junk for you all to see. You know where I'm coming from. I know guitars. I can't take any special credit for it because I just love them. I have no kids so these are my 'kids'. I've seen a lot of guitar junk over a long period of time. Right now I haven't been able to look at a guitar without wincing in pain! I've got CHRONIC arthritic gout in my hands and my fingers are swollen SOLID! It hurts like hell, anybody ever have gout? When you get it in your hands you can't play guitar and it makes jerking off VERY difficult! You'll have to take my word for it! I can't go to the building site right now either, but I AM working on a dresser and an oak table in the shop but business is so SLOWWWWWW!!!! So I can't play the guitar and can hardly masturbate. I actually do have my own place I have a two-family split-level with a wood shop and a rehearsal room next door. I was just trying to make a point to you by embellishing the story. You'll be sorry to hear that Mother passed away many years ago.... Your mother will pass away too! With things shutting down I thought going on this 'blog-room' when I couldn't sleep would help pass the time. I can't do anything but go online and write and try to connect with somebody with a shared interest. I thought that was what it was all about. But some of you use this blog-room to tramp on people, places and things more than anything else! This is how you welcome new comers to your blog? As I said before not everything is sweetness and light. Right from the start I gathered you didn't dig what I had to say about Ken Aguilar and partsonline/TNT/DragonFire guitars? My deal with them was disappointing to say the least! So learn it from me, that's all I'm saying. Save yourself the trouble. I'm only saying go elsewhere if you don't want to be jerked (jerked?) around! G. Fetish doesn't pull that high-handed crap with their customers! My opinion counts for SOMETHING? I have eyes! You know I know guitars! I'm not about to buy another crap DF body to match up and perform a shootout/demonstration with on YouTube for everybody! Kenny should be matching up his tele bodies with real ones and then get a better manufacturer/supplier but he's happy to sell his stuff with no returns all day long. Don't shoot me, the messenger and then throw a pile-on smother party for moi! As far as whining goes? Yes I'm a whiner but I've owned a s*** load of teles too! They were made with accurate tele bodies even if I had to shape them myself. I know how things should be and I am SURE of what they COULD be with a little more thought! I think thought scares Kenny. You have NOT made me feel welcome on this blog chums...ouch! I'm new. This is the way you treat newcomers and show them the ropes? I won't read your replies and comments to this or any further comments/remarks to my posts not in this room anyway. I don't have the stomach (even my stomach!) to do it. It's just not worth putting up with all the useless cromulent crapulence... I'll bet you hear that a lot in your everyday lives don't you? Nastiness and sniping only 'angry-s up' the blood so I will leave this blog to you testy and crazy and not a little crusty bunch of boys. Cause you use words like blunt instruments and I can't stand the sheer blunt-ish-ness any more...and the clever, clever way you find to put it to me (put it to me?) in the un-kindest way that you can think of! You're better than Oscar Wilde with the back-biting and plain angry stuff! Un-kind words flow so easily easily EASILY from your keypads!!! Yikes! You're not impressed with me? These words hurt not a little. With that in mind I would sincerely like to apologize for the un-kind words that I know I said to: Tim37,Dean and for the 'Home Depot remark' that 'Narcissism' found offensive. But don't shop at big-block retailers if you can help it tho. I stand by that!) Big-blocks don't like you! Think twice before getting a tele body from partsonline/DragonFire!With no returns So that's all. Post whatever you want in reply because I won't read them anyway! Later, you 'heelots'!
