  1. I am really surprised that method of gluing the top worked. Even with a ton of clamps, i really have to focus quite a bit to get it just right. And why all the complex designing only to use a single action truss rod?
  2. Thanks scott. That was the first time i have attempted it. Recessing the washer makes all the difference. I have refinished and sanded the ash super strat down 6 times now, and will be a 7th tomorrow. Nothing i do seems to work. I tried spraying it with black basecoat instead of dying it. It would have worked, but i forgot why i hated basecoat so much. even 800 grit scratches show up through it. So i will sand it back down again and maybe attempt one last time with dye. After this, i am NOT using any woods that cant be easily refnished.
  3. Thank you sirs. Here are some pics of it in sunlight. looks much better.
  4. Zpoxy burns in? I didnt know that was possible for epoxy.
  5. Havnt posted as much due to lack of interest, but here is a mockup of the rhoads. Plays and sounds amazing. The pictures were taken during cloud cover, so it completely killed the figure.
  6. That is a good idea. I just put my handle all the way out. After i finally used it to fret a neck, it seemed sufficiant. It wasnt as hard to press them in as a drill press. Sully, That is what i had been worried about. I have fretted around 85-100 necks in my drill press, a lot of them being bubinga and ebony. I am surprised it never started to show.
  7. Here are the next batch of neck blanks coming along.
  8. You melt the solder first and then put th wick on it. Or you can heat up the solder through the wick with the soldering iron. Yu have to keep the wick moving or else it will just try to put it back on the part you are taking it off of.
  9. It is clear coated. We just talked about this in the last couple posts. I do an open grained finish. Has basically the same feel as oil, but more protection.
  10. Nope. I have used that same dye and finish 4 times before. Anyway, Got the rhoads mostly done.
  11. That is turning out to be a great looking guitar man.
  12. The question is, how did you factor everything in to work with a TOM bridge and a 1.5* angle?
  13. Just put a straight edge across the neck that reaches the bridge. If the bridge saddles are below or level with the straightedge, then you dont have to recess. But if it hits the straight edge, then it is too high.
  14. This is the first one i have sanded through the finish on in a few years. I dont want to spray more coats. That doesnt work with open grained finishes. If you spray more than 3, then it just looks like a badly grain filled guitar. The purpose of 3 is to just give it enough to protect, but allow it to still look like wood and not a piece of plastic. The only reason i buffed through was because it wasnt drying on the dye, and it stayed soft. So around thecarve it buffed through.
  15. I have to say, that firebird bass looks like the body is 3x too big for that neck.
  16. They are double sided. One has a very very agressive side, the other a much finer side that i use after. The scratches that makes can be taken out by 80-100 grit sandpaper.
  17. I personally just use a large 12" horseshoe file. Takes wood off in a flash, and they are cheap.
  18. If it were me, i woudl glue a piece of veneer to the side of the neck, then sand it to fit the neck pocket perfectly .
  19. My expectations are equal across the board, no matter what i am working on. The pressure does kill me most of the time. I cant even sleep sometimes when i make a mistake or over anticipate something too much. I would be fine if i didnt know i was capable of better. But i know i have done much better work. It is painful to know that i am going backwards.
  20. Thanks scott. I would be perfectly fine if it was just 1 every 5 or 6 guitars. But now it has been 8 of 9 that have had problems. I become less and less professional with every guitar that comes out less than acceptable. Some days i really wish i could just walk away from it all and not be tempted to come back again. It consumes my mind more than anything. It is a physical addiction. And they are literally identical, construction wise. Only difference is the veneers. Everything else is exactly the same. It is 100% mental.
  21. Ok, i need to vent something. I have NO idea how this always happens. Whenever i am working on a guitar i dont really care about finishing, i usually just burn through it. I still pay attention, but it is like zero care to me. And of course, it always ends up coming out better than the ones i take my time on. Then, after, i start one that i really am excited to work on. I take my time, give extra care to everything. And of course, every single thing goes wrong and it doesnt come out half as good as the one i made all in just 1 day. This isnt just one occurrence, this has been happening for the past 5 years. The harder i try, the worse they come out. Then, if i try to trick myself into trying to not care, then it just comes out like i rush and really dont care. There i really no winning, is there?
  22. For some reason, 2000 grit scratches werent buffing out, and then i buffed through the clear on some parts of the carve. Have to sand the finish off the top again.
  23. Thanks, wisdom. If only a price increase. But i just ruined the finish, so no price at all for now.
