Sabbath was very good. Ozzy was amazingly coherent. That was my first time seeing the original lineup. Seemed to me that there was a minor problem with Tony's setup at first (it seemed it lacked volume), but it was resolved rather quickly. My only gripe was that they didn't do Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. In all honesty, the group that surprised me the most was Slayer. I am not a big Slayer fan, but they did an excellent job. Some of the younger bands could learn a thing or two from them. There wasn't too much gab in between songs, they pretty much just got up there and rocked out.

Dial-up. In a related story, I downloaded Debian Linux (FTP) on dialup about a couple of years ago (took either two or three days!) I started it right before I left town for a couple of days.

Went to Ozzfest this week. First major concert I've been to in years (Like about 17 or 18 years). BLS, Slayer, JP, Sabbath; excellent show. Reaffirmed my belief that Zakk is a bad man.

I have an old (bought in late 80's) ProCo Rat and am curious about something. I have noticed that when it is powered with a 9v battery, there seems to be a constant drain on the battery; it eats batteries at an incredible rate. It can be off, and the indicator light will have an extremely dim glow to it, so dim in fact that you can only see it in the dark. If I unplug the cords when not using it, the battery life is increased. What's up with this? Do all stomp boxes have this problem, or is it a fluke? It is no big deal, just curious. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the kind words ya'll. I am on dial-up, so I tend to keep pix small for those of us in that boat. I'll try to get the camera and post some more eventually. It isn't 100% complete, but what is left is mostly simple stuff (cavity covers, mounting ring for the p-up etc. ). I experimented with position markers, but decided against any. As for the body shape, someone here (Drak maybe?) made the comment once that they didn't build unless it was something that 'rocked their world'. I have an American Strat, an RGT42FM, and an old Yamaha strat-like, so I figured why not a v. It seems that people either love the shape or hate it. One thing about it, thanks to the curve, you can actually play this one sitting down!

This is my first real attempt at woodworking of any kind. I readily admit to several mistakes, but it is all a learning experience. Things my first build has taught me (so far). . . 1. S-L-O-W D-O-W-N ! 2. You need templates. 3. Short cuts will actually cost more in the long run (time and money). 4. Routers and saws won't do anything you don't let them do (if you screw up, it's your fault). 5. There is no substitute for having the right tools. 6. Sand until you are sick of sanding, then sand some more. 7. A dust mask and/or respirator is not a bad idea. 8. Don't be scared. 9. Spend what money you have where it will do the most good (tools). 10. If you don't know- read first then ask. * This list is not all inclusive, just all I feel like typing right now.

Cutting out body shape without a bandsaw

I picked up a Delta single speed scroll saw for $45 US (new; it was a closeout model) a few weeks ago. It will cut up to 2" stock with no problem. -
Yep. I am impressed by speed to an extent, but if it is just mechanical I don't see a point in it (other than for a picking exercise). I personally wouldn't consider that shredding anymore than I would consider a 10 year-old-kid stealing passwords a hacker. Anyway- it is all opinion.

And what if I can hum something that you can't play? What are your rules for that. Set us straight here. We need you to tell us what is musically valid and what isn't. Bobby McFerrin can hum just about anything so I guess anything goes. Melody. 'Music' without melody is just noise. Satch is a shredder who never sacrifices melody for speed. Don't take it personally dude, it's my opinion.

I think you are dead on. Shred is all about technique, speed and style. My personal thoughts: a solo/lead without a memorable melody is like a story without a plot. If you can't hum it, it wasn't worth playing .

Tremolo tuning is a pain!

My RG gave me fits when I first bought it (I had never had a floating trem before). Rich Harris' site was a lifesaver, I followed his instructions and it worked flawlessly. -
I did a search before posting and nothing came up, so my apologies if this has been brought up before. For those of you who play and like to record your own stuff, have any of you tried Audacity? It is open source (free) and is pretty good stuff, especially if you don't have the money to buy the commercial recording software (and don't wanna steal it ). Before you ask, I have nothing to do with it. I just found it a year or so ago and figured I'd pass it along. Hope this helps someone.

Clueless new guy here. . . What about using soft maple for the fretboard or even the body? Any serious cons?
