  1. that depends entirely on the dimensions of the guitar, whether or not you are making a multi laminate neck, whether or not you have a neck angle,a headstock angle,a scarf joint, whether or not you intend to make it standard thickness, whether you have a top or not and if so how thick it is.... where to join it is also entirely up to you...i follow the neck taper all the way through the body ,except on the one in the tutorial,on which the taper ended at the end of the fretboard, and it stayed 2 1/4" from there all the way through again...up to you,but i would go h-h...because itis cheaper and the middle pickup bother me,as it is in my picking path that is plenty.i buld most of mine for around $600. i can give you some tips for lowering your prices. first off...buy your wood from a local cabinet shop or hardwood shop...all the wood together ,not including the fretboard, should cost about $60..the fretboard should cost about $25 preslotted. are you using a t.o.m.?if so,use the money you save on wood for tonepros hardware...an upgrade well worth the money....or if you want a combination wraparound bridge...save your money and get the aluminum one here http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailp...und_Bridge.html or elsewhere if you can find it cheaper...try universaljems.com...it is owned by the owner of this website and he offers great prices on everything he stocks.also try him for other parts. if you go with a figured top,you can get AA stuff very inexpensively from cabinet shops.if you MUST have AAAAA stuff...just keep your eyes peeled and good luck. with that kind of scratch i could build a very nice guitar with top quality EVERYTHING.
  2. I don't agree with that to be honest wes, it's not an off topic post, it is directly related to guitars and design, hence my putting it in the guitars and bass forum. Off topic is as I understand, for issues NOT related to guitars, my entire post is based on guitars and patenting designs. ← i'm sorry you don't agree...but it really is a stretch to call it "solidbody chat",since it refers to patents and trademarks in general...not just on solidbody guitars...and has nothing to do with construction. but we don't have a "legal" section...the closest we have is this section.off topics is a "catch all" for whatever doesn't quite fit anywhere else.you will get just as many readers here. it might be nice though to have a factual representation of the laws which apply to this subject pinned in that section though...so that wannabee builders can read BEFORE they go trying to replicate trademarked or patented designs for profit. hmm...food for thought...tell you what.i will pin it there and send kevan and brian my thoughts on this...and see what they think..okay? and try to get as much factual info in here as possible.and we will see if we can avoid the bickering that usually happens on this subject.
  3. i am lately becoming a big fan of honduran mahogany and hard maple... the sweet highs and "dusty" rythm tone really sounds good to me...although i still love alder as well
  4. i have mixed feelings about this...is it a gibson?just be sure you are ready to do a great job...because you will be ruining all resale value. i would never say that about most guitar brands...but gibsons and fenders are always worth more when left original
  5. i think that is a good way to do it...but my ibanez sabre 540 fm does not do it that way...don't ask me why though... maybe someone else could enlighten me? but i have never done a scarf joint...i intentionally buy my wood long enough not to
  6. i have seen the sillhouettes matched up on the net as well.they were nothing alike...but they are similar enough for a side by side comparison. but trademark infringement is between the companies and the court.they made their decision
  7. that isn't a chassis...that is an enclosure. the chassis is the part that houses all the electronics
  8. i can't get enough of this guitar right now...i absolutely love it. i ordered the emgs for it...these http://guitarpartsdepot.com/Merchant2/merc...ory_Code=EMGGTR
  9. by the way...neck throughs are the way to go on a mockingbird imo
  10. i agree with rggr...i have slotted my own boards before...it is quite tedious and time consuming. preslotted is a great option
  11. nirvana?oh my gawd my hair just turned white!!!!! metallica is an older band than them....as well as slayer
  12. well it is very nice. i think starting the bid at $500 with a big "reserve not met" is going to be looked down upon. i agree with scott
  13. generic topic titles SUCK...to put it in a language you guys can understand...since i guess most of you don't understand it when i say "be more specific in your topic title." nothing sucks worse than having to read a topic i have no interest in just to find out what it is about so that i can correctly edit the topic title
  14. dude...you are so bad at getting things placed in the right section....how does this belong in solidbody?because you are too lazy to scroll down? this is AT LEAST the third topic of yours i have moved in your short stay here
  15. i think you must have gotten a solvent on them.possibly an uncured bit of nitro or something?
  16. i actually know the answer to this one short answer to the original question...no longer answer... some people just NEVER get it and never will...some are automatic geniuses at it...just like any ability...some have it,some don't. i don't base this on reason...i base this on experience. my cousin who is the same age as me started playing guitar at 16...his mom plays and is reasonably good, and he had a ton of friends who played to help him learn...plus many tab books to learn from...he was very motivated and practiced hours a day...VERY driven i started playing at 18...with one of his old thrown away guitar bodies that i stuck a neck on.i surpassed him within 2 months, with less avenues of learning...i was also very motivated and practiced hours a day.last time i saw him he had been playing every day for over 6 years...he STILL could not even properly play "eye of the beholder"(such a simple song) we are both tall, skinny(he is slightly taller and the same build as me),he is smart, loves music, and has good taste in music.no physical disabilities whatsoever...he can move his fingers as well as me...and trills faster than me...but he is apparently missing some part of his mind which helps you with your sense of rythm... he will never be able to play a song in a manner in which you would recognize it....he will play it the same poor way every time...over and over...never improving an iota...it is baffling to me..but it is a fact. size of hands means nothing.my best friend who was killed was twice the guitarist as me....with short, fat hands where mine are long and thin. the only thing i could do better than that guy was give a rock solid rythm.we ALL have talents...but we do not all have the same talents. that is why great instrumentalists are marveled at...because they do something not everyone can. i learned long ago not to get mad at my cousin about this...he thought he was playing well...to him it sounded just right.
  17. moved to off topics...not because it is not important...just because it belongs here
  18. it doesn't bother me at all that you feel that way..because my moderating is kept to moderating the rules.and there are no rules against civil discussions...and i have not moderated this thread yet at all.i am merely speaking as a member of the forum.if you can't see that,or the need for someone to originally speak out against a misleading auction, then your opinion means nothing to me. the thread is now starting to become less civil. lesmortestant and luke r.you need to keep the discussion leaned more towards a debate(even if it is slightly heated),and less towards an all out flame war. lesmortdansant.you misunderstand me now.you are reading anger into my last few posts when there is none now that you have done the right thing.all i have been doing in the last few posts is explaining to you the reason for my first post, and i still feel perfectly jusitified in voicing my opinion the way i did. mkg bass.debates, even heated ones, will always be allowed by me,from anyone,as long as the intent is clearly constructive.not everyone feels it necessary to take the side of every guilty party on the forum the way you do.you consistently jump in to say "shame on you" to anyone who disagrees with anyone else. well shame on you for not knowing when it is appropriate to make a stand.and for not knowing the meaning of hypocrisy or what it means to patronize. anyway...lesmortdansant.if it is still not clear,i apologize for not making my last few posts more clear...to be quite clear,i believe you now have done the right thing.i do not apologize for my first post .as i said before,it was justified. all i can say if you still do not understand is that i hope the next time someone does something YOU clearly percieve as wrong, and you have to jump in and speak your mind, that you will remember this discussion and will realize that just because we all make mistakes does not mean we don't deserve to be called out when we make that mistake.it happens to everyone, and when you do get called out, rather than lashing out, just admit your mistake, rectify it as best you can,and move on. and build more guitars
  19. Hello, Mojo - great to see you here and thanks for the support as always. rhoads56 - You're taking this like quite a gentleman I have to say. Mojo sent me the image of your fretboard a couple weeks ago. My e-mail reply to him was "he ripped us off". Now I read you posted the images months ago... I am no stranger to having my inlay designs "ripped" by other builders. Some blatantly. It stings. I can only hope that you can take my word that I had not seen your fingerboard prior to this. Based on your above post, it seems that you have already considered this. Thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt. As Mojo explained, this concept guitar was in the works for quite sometime, close to a year. I have quite an extensive library of Dover copyright-free artwork/clipart books. Most of the sharks came from a variety of art books, coloring books, tattoos, and even children's stickers. (Mojo doesn't know that , however ). A little tweak here and there to fit within the frets was all. In any event, thanks again. I hope to spend more time over here - this is a great forum from what I've read so far. Sincerely, Ron Thorn ← i would LOVE to see you hang around.it really looks like you have your stuff together.
  20. you need to plan out the placement and debug your design before you ever drill them.and make sure you plan for the strings to wrap around the correct side of the tuners...i have made THAT mistake...and believe me...there is nothing worse than making an otherwise very nice guitar that tunes backwards. most people design headstocks so that the string path is as straight as possible through the nut.
