  1. You can also just draw one half of the headstock and cut it out. To get it symmetrical place it on the centre line and draw round it, then flip it over the centre line and draw round it again. I was using your method to get a symmetrical body design until my old man told me to do o it this way. He used to build boats and thats how they make sure it's all symmetrical.
  2. Yeah man, it's gorgeous. It's a Berlin Vintage Classic (hard tail with diamond shaped abolne inlays). Still no hardware on it, I was supposed to get the bits I needed of my folks and bro for my b'day, but they're all skint too so all I ended up getting was some 500k pots that haven't got a long enough shaft Still, I think I'm a bit too old for birthdays. Got it for £150 - never strung up......bargin at twice the price
  3. Because I can't even do a Squire justice Besides, I've got my Eggle to keep me company until I can do one justice................oh and I'm skint.
  4. First of all a warning: I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE OF THIS, but I'm sure someone will confirm this or blow it out of the water. I would imagine that you need to clamp the neck to the table and keep your router perpendicular to the neck, probably by putting a bit of wood on either side. You'd then shape the binding to the radius of the fretboard. Kaj
  5. Big bit of wood, some music, couple of cans of beer and some power tools. The essentials for all shed work.
  6. Not sure about the properties, but it sure will smell nice
  7. Personally, I'd only put a burst on it if the method was going to be shown in the mag. Otherwise you'll have extra bits on the guitar which you haven't shown people how to do and it wouldn't be a true representation. Do I remeber you saying that this was going to be a competetion prize........might enter. And Russ, if you want to spell things differently, get your own bloody language and stop cocking around with ours
  8. I was seeing who would be the first to anser a post with "test" as the title Not really, I changed my avatar but it didn't filter through the system. I was using this for new posts to see if it worked (it didn't, then it did). The emu in the avatar used to be my wallpaper. I have a rather dodgy looking horse now When did you become a mod then? Must have missed that.
  9. Heating and quenching steel turns it Martensitic, which is brittle. I would send MP63 a PM and ask him to join in this conversation. He know about this sort of stuff. I'd say that if it is crap low grade steel (low carbon) then case hardening would be the way to go, but like I said ask MP63
  10. Won't the tinted clear affect the colour of the dot?? ....which could make it look even less distinct?? Just a thought... DJ That's what I thought. Personally I don't think I'd really like the look anyway, but each to their own. If you're trying to go for something really subtle on purpose, I thought about cutting some plugs out of the same wood and inlaying them with the grain perpendicular to the grain in the fretboard.
  11. For god sake, change your name back, you're begining to confuse me
  12. I normally (rightly or wrongly) use my surform at an angle to the direction I push it. Say you are looking down on the piece from above, I'd normally have the surform at about 45 degrees to the piece with my left hand infront of my right hand. Be really carefull with a surform they take wood off really quickly. Practice on a bit of scrap and you'll be fine within about 10 minutes
  13. mmm, interesting. I think that the distance between to O's is so small compared to the length between nodes that it wouldn't make that much difference....... until you think about the winding acting in compression and tension at the very top of each anti-node. This would cause friction and dampen the vibration of the string. As for the exam question, I've been fighting with how to cut through bridges all day (except for going for a lot of ciggie breaks and drinking way too much coffee), so I'll leave that for a better day And "bunch of crap" is an old engineering term, much like "about this long"
  14. Just off the top of my head, and believe me this is only an itial though, I don't think it owuld be a good idea. Although the string as a whole vibrates there are loads of overtones which are where parts of the string vibrate around various nodes down the string length. If the string is thicker between two of the nodes, it will (try to) vibrate at a different frequency to the section of the string next to it. If this is the case, I could see one dampening the other and making the overtones diminished. But saying that, it could be the best guitar invention yet, you just never know
  15. I really like the body but I'm a bit so/so about the headstock.
  16. With out fail. In fact unless the telly is on, there's always music playing unless I'm on the job or asleep I used to work in the spare bedroom and used to play music through my PC that was in the room. I sold it to my mate after a couple of years and got a rather amusing phone call a few days later. Apparently the heatsink and tranny had about an inch of sawduct covering them. He could smell smoke and then realised that it was comming from the computer. Nearly set alight to his house
  17. Mike - Your job sounds a bit funky. What do you think about the cryogenic side of things? Can you shed any light on that?
  18. My wifes getting rather annoyed with me using all her nail varnish remover Smells of starwberries which is nice to work with
