  1. Good luck to both of you. I hope to see your back in action if for nothing else than the selfish reason that I enjoy your build threads.
  2. I can look into it but if I recall correctly you can still get a direct replacement from Aria USA.
  3. Weston and Aria were both made by the Matsumoku factory in the 1980's. It may be the same pickup. There is a board for fans of those guitars at http://www.matsumoku.org/guitars.html There have been discussions of SB pickups there.
  4. So would you consider the thing I linked to a respirator? Just curious. No that is just a dust mask that is set up to grab air from behind. I guess the idea is the air behind you is better than in front were you are working. The specs (mircon size and % filter) don't add up to anything that should be used for anything other than "nuisance" dust (OSHA term not mine).
  5. The short answer is no. A full face may help. Petroleum jelly may help. Neither will insure a good fit. BTW everyone should get an OK from there doctor before using a filtering respirator. Dust masks are for iritants only. They don't have what it takes to deal with toxic particles. Just to give my credentials, over twenty years as an OSHA certified hazardous waste site supervisor and trainer.
  6. Check garage sales. I have let a few pass my by in the $10 to $25 range.
  7. Pictures would help. How straight is your neck? If you to much relief you may be able to do a truss rod adjustment. Shaving a bridge saddle can be tricky on an acoustic electric as the contact of the saddle to the piezo is important. You may be looking at a neck reset.
  8. Can't say with a guitar but I play upright bass. In the late 19th and early 20th century there were a lot of basses made in France with thick sides. There is a fairly even stream of work for luthiers thinning the sides. Reportedly it makes a big difference. Also I would think bending thick sides would be a real pita.
  9. My wife who plays piano now understands why I spend so much time on this site. She also wants to know if you make pianos. You know I don't like tremalo bridges, I don't like resessed bridges and I don't like reverse headstocks and I love this guitar.
  10. Isn't there a tutorial on building cases. Great looking guitar by the way.
  11. Just to be clear, I agree that a good string through bridge would be a good way to go. However, the OP said he was new to guitar modding and I suggested caution as this is not an easy job for a beginner. I have huge respect for the work SwedishLuthier does and for his opinions.
  12. Installing a string through body bridge in a guitar that is not set up for it is not a job to get your feet wet in modding guitars unless you are an experienced wood worker with access to a drill press. If you want to go from 6 to 3 saddles, you will have to replace the bridge. A good setup can do a lot to improve a cheep guitar. Other than adding that I think Kpcrash had it on the nose.
  13. I am not a big mockingbird fan but that one has class.
  14. Eye protection too. Do you really want to know why I add that?
  15. You are welcome sir. Remember to pop in and say a word once and a while. As long as I know people are reading I will keep posting. RAD, your threads are definitely the best on PG right now for in depth coverage of the process and I'd imagine there are many more people reading and enjoying them than chiming in. +1 of many
  16. Hey Clovis is my dog's name. He doesn't look anything like a corvus.
  17. Sounds like you may have a bad solder joint at the other end of one of the wires (i.e., not at the switch). That can happen when you are moving components around.
  18. looking very nice. I am with you on flatwounds but they do help keep you from having that floppy feel on a short scale.
  19. Interesting project. I think high tension strings work best on a short scale bass. Bass is my main instrument. Flat wound strings are good as are heavy gauge ones.
  20. Ummm...suddenly I'm feeling really stupid. I hadn't thought of that . BTW, I still can't imagine how this product can be used for fingernails, can you? Seems like it would come out like lizard scales or something. There are some things you just don't want to know...
  21. Nice looking bass. I like the inlaid knob markers. You should put in for GOTM. We don't get that many bass entered.
  22. Black hardware will look great on a dark guitar. I used to do some picture framing. If the picture was dark I used black in the mat. If you went light it was the mat not the picture that caught the eye. Cool picture of you and your dog. Great looking build.
