  1. Check the sellers other items too. Im sure gilmer woods had a batch of that. Looks beautiful. :D
  2. The steel wool igniting is an old camping trick to get a fire started quickly, just a piece of steel wool and 1.5v battery shorted with the wire will get a wee fire going very quickly. Just remember that if your making a guitar out in the woods and it starts getting cold..............
  3. Here is another little update, i still aint got round to actually freting this board yet but i have managed to get the binding on got it to follow the radius of the board, i have used a few coats of tung oil on the maple to stop bleeding from the ebony making it all dirty and horrible! I still need to clean out the fret slots for the tenth time and then get down to fretting it, i am really pleased about how it turned out so far.
  4. Doing fret dressing can often be a total &&$^ of a job and repair guys really need to charge fairly handsomely to do it. Doing fret dressings makes me wanna die! I reckon $80 minimum thats £50 ish in my money for an easy one.
  5. I am what is known as a guitar tech, firstly you dont need too many tools to get going, just enough stuff to be able to take guitars to pieces and be able to put them back together. The best way to get into it is to take all your guitars and other thing to bits and find out how the work, use mates guitar if they let you! I wouldnt say being a tech is a job you are likely to make alot of money with, its difficult to make money because you need to fix a lot of guitars per week to make anything, People seem generally shocked at the prices of some repairs and don't realise how much time goes into a fret dressing or big rewire job. Buy a couple of El cheapo guitars and make them play as good as possible, forget about learn things like refinishing and building to start with most of your time will be taken up by new pickups installs and general setups, get good at all that stuff first. There is a few Dan Erlewine books that you also buy too. Good Luck
  6. Drak i am gonna need to make myself a template for an EMG, the one i got from stew mac is just to big at the ears, i plan just to use a slightly oversize bearing on 1/2" cutter to make the whole thing 4mm smaller which will make it nice and tight.
  7. The new boss GT8 has that effect built in.
  8. Yea defo, thats why there is an off topics forum. Maybe there should be one for straight flaming to keep it out the main/guitar related ones?
  9. Aeolian is the normal minor greg it is a mode of the major scale. Dont worry to much about melodic minor it simple resolves the harmonic minor sound by adjusting the interval to get rid of the bit that makes the harmonic sound the way it does. Dont get a sore head!
  10. Why are u saying sorry about your Blanket? I am really glad you are hanging around, who else is gonna tell me about WOD. Cheers Drak
  11. Can i asked where you got the wood from? i am from glasgow and i cant find many places to get suitable wood.
  12. i Have never had a prob getting normal stuff drying, i guess 500ml would be the minimum. It really depends on the type of wood the body is made out of how easy and how much oil you need to finish it .
  13. What shape are you making? 550 mm is fairly big, certainly big enough to make most things.
  14. Necks tend to wear down on the bass side where the player's thumb would rest, so i am guessing it would be the Low E greg.
  15. I have an ebony headstock veener but i dont know if i have the required skill to bind it. The inlays are just 5mm abalone dots from stew mac. i should have it fretted by tuesday. Cheers Jason
  16. Right i aint posted in a while but i still have been busy on this project. With what happened this week on here i thought i better get some stuff up. Thats after i just glued in the Dots with epoxy. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b325/gem...at/DSC00007.jpg This is after i fitted the binding which is maple btw. I have already radiused the board as the dust from the ebony would have gotten on to the maple and spoiled it if i had of done after i aplied the binding. I'm getting there!
  17. Please dont be as scary as B from prisioner cell block H Have fun in your new post.
  18. In the 70's strats changed dramatically. They didnt have any of the smooth curves they had in the fiftes or today and were heavy as £$%$ . So yes they do vary.
  19. Measure it. If the string spacing is 50mm or above its F Spaced. It will be F spaced if it is fairly new.
  20. Yea its not the 11's that are heavy greg, its the low strings! 11 are normal for anything with a gibson scale length IMO
  21. I string my tele with 11,14,18,36,52,70 tuned to standard tuning! It sets up with a nice low action and sounds awesome. DO NOT put this gauge on your SG or Les Paul you will pull the neck off.
  22. Yea it is not out of the question to do it, but the cavity in these things are complicated because of how thin the wood is at the pots, it has to be to get the knobs flush with the top.
