Mahogany's a fairly warm sounding wood, so the hot pickups should suit it fairly well. You can always switch them if you don't like them... But you're on a budget you said.

Man, finish this project. It looks SOOOOO nice. Way nicer than my project I'm working on right now (It's my first). Hopefully my next project will wind up looking as nice as this.

What guitar/body shape are you doing it on? That may help to give people some ideas.

Nice guitars, but I'd add an elbow contour too. The Strat is my favorite body shape because it contours my body so well. ^______^

Well, if you need a loud setup, my idea probably won't work, but Crate has a tube amp called a V8 Palamino 5W. It's got two 12AX7 and two EL84 tubes so it should sound fairly good. And then you could pick up the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal and I'd say you'd have a good setup. If you need louder though, you could buy the 15W Palamino amp, but I dunno. The Vox Valvetronix series can also give you a wide range of sounds from blues to metal and is fairly cheap.
