  1. Good god that looks amazing!! I love the top on that guitar so much.....
  2. 1) Finish my 8 string - (almost completed!!) 2) 7 String Explorer (neck is already scarf jointed and I have all the parts) 3) 6 string fretless bass 4) 7 string floyd equipped neck thru, quilted top (deep blue) super-telecaster. Something like the Carvin Holdsworth model. 5) 7 string out of the scraps i have.
  3. That all depends...i have a RG550 with an Edge system on it and i've seen the RG470 have the TRS Pro. It depends on which model the system is coming from but typically any of the RG models at 5xx or above usually have the higher end units.
  4. Hey guys, I recently started another guitar but i was looking into using a tune o matic tail piece. I also noticed that on Godin guitars, the bridge is recessed pretty deeply and the neck pocket dosent' appear to have an angle to it. Do you guys recommend using this idea? I'm really not comfortable yet with angling the neck pocket of a guitar. Brian
  5. I'm so stunned - you guys are talking about highly technical death metal and nobody has mentioned Decapitated. These guys are seriously a scary bunch of technical players - they're all trained at some music school in Europe. Nobody has mentioned Cynic either!! Or Death!??? Have we forgotten Chuck's groundbreaking work in the metal scene?! *flailing arms wildly* Anyways, my vote is metal... Strapping Young Lad, Slayer, Decapitated, Criminey, Cynic, Goatwhore, Damageplan, Death, Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan, Soilwork, In Flames.....
  6. I'd actually stopped playing completely once my band of 11 years broke up. I had no motivation. I played tournament level paintball for 7 years and i tore the hell out of my ankle. Since i couldn't do that anymore, i picked up guitar again. I was on the Jemsite and I saw a link to PG and I was instantly hooked. If i couldn't afford to buy the 2500 USD guitars that i liked so much, i could just build them. So now i'm building an 8 string.
  7. I've had nothing but good luck with Duncans. I've had Dimarzio's and EMG's but I always end up going to Duncans.
  8. They've got enough used and single tuners for about 40 guitars up in that little shop. I was going to head over there sometime next week and pick up a set of the new sperzels.
  9. - the imported BC Rich guitars did their jobs - they got people into guitar at a decent price with a half decent guitar. The USA BC Rich guitars are, in my opinion, absolutely beautiful machines. I managed to lay my hands on a USA made Gunslinger years back and it was one of the easiest playing, best sounding guitars i'd ever played.
  10. Awesome! Thanks Maiden! I hope that the next project turns out a little better, but at least i haven't heard "that neck sucks" for my first project! The headstock - it might look thick but it's the exact thickness of my Ibanez's headstock. The pics are deceiving! Ibanezrocker - I did the tilt back headstock using a scarf joint. There's a tutorial on the tutorial section of the main page that i used as a reference. It takes a lot of patience, but take your time and it'll turn out great. I figured that since almost everyone here who has built a guitar before stresses taking your time and planning it out, it would probably be a good idea.
  11. It fits the truss rod perfectly but i was kinda worried at first as well. It's the truss rod from www.forloversofwood.com (A&M Wood Supply). I took a shot of hte volute but i think i'm ok.... i hope.
  12. It's a little further down than i originally wanted but i actually made a pretty serious mistake on the bandsaw and that was pretty much the best way to repair it. It's about 5 MM behind the nut and almost directly under the tilt. I'll grab another shot though. I think the picture makes it look a little off.... Thanks again for the comments guys! Matt --> I haven't had much of a chance to start on the other necks. I figured that I would make my "learning" mistakes on this neck before i start going at the nicely laminated block. (i love this place!)
  13. That's my cat "Squid." He's a 25 pound lazy, sucky, living pillow...the most friendly cat in creation! I'll get a current pic of the body tonight. I've got the fretboard faced properly and i'm going to be cutting the fret slots next week in a mitre box that i made. I'm a little intimidated by doing the radiusing though. I've seen a lot of "here's me radiusing a fretboard" but nothing really detailing how to do it properly. Does anyone have any tips, pointers, do's and dont's on this? I have a 16 inch radial sanding block.
  14. I finally had a chance to take photos of the neck. I spent 4 hours today on it today getting it to what it is now.
  15. Your work is mind-blowing. You are truly gifted Craig!
  16. It's far too subjective to define the "best" guitarist. Of the guitarists you listed, i really don't listen to any of them. Steve Vai John Petrucci Derek Taylor Joe Satriani That's pretty much who I like and i'm pretty sure that a heavy blues player wouldnt' have a similar list.
  17. My Ibanez RG770 that i bought for 250 bucks CAD. I put a Parallel Axis trembucker in the bridge, a Cool Rail in the middle and a JB in the neck. I was working a guitar store when i bought the guitar so i bought all the pickups in the same day. I didn't realize that all the pickups were bridge models until after I had everything wired up. It absolutely screams.
  18. I'm working with the square ones from Stewmac. Thanks again for the help guys, i guess it's that little push forward that I needed when I was unsure.
  19. Hi guys. A while ago i expressed interest in making an 8 string guitar and installling carbon graphite rods in the neck was recommended to me. I have already routed for the truss rod but i'm unsure of how long of the rod i should be installing into my neck parallel to the truss rod. I'm also wondering what the point of the truss rod is going to be if these things have absolutely no flex in them.....
  20. I've also done some pretty extensive research trying to find something other than the hipshot but no dice. I did however discover that Graph Tech makes the replacement saddles for the hipshot bridge to work with their Ghost Piezo system. Definite bonus.... Maybe that would sway you to the Hipshot?
  21. Strange thing is that they don't post a lot of their other available models. On their website, there is only a 6 string headless unit available. I emailed them and they do supply a 7 and 8 string model. I'm still waiting for a response from them on a couple of things but i'll fire out the question here for the knowledgable. Do you have to use double ball end strings for their headless units or do they have a headpiece like the ones from Music Yo that enable you to use normal single ball end strings? I'm looking into getting the 7 string headless unit but i dont' know where i can find a 54 or 56 gauge double ball end string......
  22. In what regards? Opeth is a very solid band with great musicians but putting them above DT in talent and ability is just wrong. daveq - it seriously took some getting used to James' vocals for me but now i can't stop listening to them after .....almost a decade? Check out the album "Awake" and you might have a change of heart. Then again, ya may not. If you're a fan of Petrucci's playing (like me) you might dig on Liquid Tension Experiment. It's a side band of Mike Portnoy that included Petrucci and other musicians. Solid instrumental music.
