    tap, tap, tap... is this thing on? I'll be here all week folks. anywho... it occurs to me today as I'm assembling 5' x 21" boxes out of 2x4s... it would be much easier to build this workbench if I could just set it on a longer workbench, lol.

    so... about to redo my work bench. would be interested in input in terms of things one might think about incorporating. I was thinking I'd have half the top on one of the benches on hinges, and keep my chop saw on the shelf just below. In theory I could just lift my chop saw out and use... then put it back, saving me perhaps half the lift from the floor to the top of the bench. might be a waste as I rarely use it. another thing I def want to incorporate is a spot for doing the joint on tops. just a 1" slit in the top to run the router bit and perhaps some holes at the back to slip a clamp through. I always build stuff and then immediately think of something else I should have done... in the interest of avoiding that: any things I might want to consider? what features did you include in your work bench? extra points for pics.

    I have heard of this from a guy locally who was selling wood and doing cnc cutting boards. apparently there is some waterproof demo they do... supposed to be really impressive. up close and personal it had a really natural looking finish... I would have bought some but it was very expensive. if it's the same stuff... I think it'd be great, but I can't recall if that was the exact name or not. if it is made for cutting boards I would think it would seal it great... the only question would be if you will like the feel. just my 2 cents and probably not worth a dime.

    had meant to post earlier... typed it out and everything but must've forgotten to send. basically what scottr said above. It can't be naptha... and it does leave a residue/oil. if you take a perfectly maple unfinished neck and add lemon oil to it many times... you'll turn it yellow. (ask me how I know). generally it is sold as clean/condition for wood and lots of folks swear by it for occasional cleaning/conditioning of fretboards. I have only recently heard some arguments against it for that... and most of those arguments go something like "don't do it too much". I'd add to that... don't use it on bare maple. all that said... can't imagine using it as a finish.

    no... but I used to work on roofs... tar jobs that needed to be re-done. friends called me ted. they'd say "oh look, here comes re-tar ted". sometimes they'd call me three tar ted.

    except if it's satin poly... then you just play knights in white satin over and over... pretty boring.

    hadn't even considered that... this is a poly finish so... good for polytones but not much else. ;)

    hehe... yeah probably ruined the tone by floating the bridge... I mean... no longer making contact with the tonewood so... probably just revert back!

    c'mon curtisa... me and carl verheyen are over at the water drinking and hopin' you'll join us!!! seriously tho... I've had this guitar decked and it didn't stay in tune as well as it does right now with the trem floating. I know exactly what will happen if I change the tension from what it is right now because I zeroed in on this spot (after that video I fine tuned a bit more). the low e was coming back a hair flat - so I increased spring tension and it improved. high e was sharp... so I loosened tension. It's not as good as a floyd (obviously) but better than any 6 screw I've ever played. Up until now it never occurred to me that you might want something other than a squared trem claw... so forgive my fan-boyism... it has sort of been a revelation for me.

    having tried this... I think your comment on step 1 is verified. all i did was set the claw at an angle. just tuned the g string to pitch when bending up. that caused all strings to bend at specified intervals. after the vid above I observed that the low e was coming back flat... so gave it more and more tension till it came back perfect. Now it stays in tune perfect. going back to vs100 comment - i have a babicz w straight claw that stays in tune perfect... but I wonder if the actual springs there have differing tensions. I can tell you that my vs100 - I had issues getting it to return perfect. once I angled the claw... 98% there. the vid above: I made zero other changes. strings are old. nut is cut right, but tuners aren't great. this trem never returned in tune even with graph tech saddles.

    no time like the present... for the record: I jacked with my spring tension a little more, and screwed in my hi e string trem screw and it is improved a bit from the video. I'd say 98% in tune after a divebomb. that's a pretty big feat on a 6 screw trem imo.

    challenge accepted! I just broke a string on my vs100 guitar so... will have to restring that. I have two non locking guitars that stay in tune almost perfect. 1 is a strat with a babicz. Now that I have seen this... I have no idea why that one works as good as it does. it is decked... but I can seriously abuse it and it will come right back. now the vs100 comes right back. I'm going to go play with my guitar with 6 screw and see if I can improve it. I'll do a quick video clip sometime this week with my results.

    well, comparing p90 to strat pickup... there's a lot of differences... most p90s use bar magnets so the poles aren't magnetic... making them more like a humbucker in that sense... and singles use mangetic poles. obviously the footprint has a lot to do with the sound to. all that said I think a lower output p90 sounds a lot like a higher output strat style. p90s tend to be fat sounding... but if you get a lower wind p90 they can be pretty chimey. another difference of note is the placement. even comparing a tele with singles combined to a strat 2 4 is a world of difference to me. most p90 setups are closer to the tele. At the end of the day there's only one way to find out... but g&l has been putting 3 p90-like pickups in their guitars for years. I suspect it's going to be different and awesome. have been thinking about a 3 p90 tele myself.

    I don't think the wind direction or polarity has an impact on sound at all but more the combining of two coils that are opposite wind and polarity to each other. hum canceling also cancels and reinforces freq and this is why the 2 and 4 sound a bit dif.

    also, good info about the relative pitch change... I guess I just never noticed this before.
