  1. I don't think that's any worse than some guys get hit here. I think what they are saying is the bass is much more valuable than you or anyone here thought. It seems to me there are some luthiers and collectors on there that KNOW what the bass is and how much it is worth both in $$$ and in the collectibilty and rarity of these instruments. I wouldn't take the harsh comments personally but I would definitely PM a few of the guys there to find out what you really are holding on to. What I think they are saying is: I'd hate for a guy to yank apart a Stradivarius he found in the attic to get some experience without him really knowing what he is destroying........
  2. 33?!?! I was 33 once........I think! Many more brother!! Stay off here for a day and enjoy it!
  3. Here in Wisconsin there are several local web sites that are very active with people seeking band mates. taxi.com also has a national site that has a state by state breakdown - at least they used to - I haven't been to their site in a while. Start with a search for "musicians new york" or whatever city you are in or near. There are 4 fairly large metro areas near here and they all have there own sites. Good Luck!!
  4. Actually my family is 1/2 Irish but the Irish couldn't handle us so they threw us out back to the topic.... What's so hard about coming in here, acting like a respectful person, contributing when you can, gleaning knowledge when you need it and not being a jerk off in between? 99% of the people here don't seem to have a problem with that but there seem to be a few that must, for the sake of attention or some mental instability, continue to harass the forum and cause disruption. It ain't that hard people. I have seen some conversations in here in the last 2 weeks that, if held face to face, would have resulted in some folks getting their heads taken off. Why not talk as if the person is standing in front of you and use respect for them and the place you are? Having been around here for a while it seems the forum runs fine for a few months then a new member comes around, starts a load up and gets everyone in a tizzy for a few weeks. After the new guy goes away it all goes back to normal. Why not ignore the troublemaker, get on with life and keep the forum on an even keel? As far as suggestions go they are taken into consideration by Brian and Kevan who are both extremely busy with things like earning a living and running a business. Those things take priority to what may seem important here. The problem with suggestions is the troublemaker shows up, pisses everyone off, stirs up the pot and 300 suggestions come at them in one week. When they don't get addressed immediately threads like this start up and continue to drag the forum down when we should be happy little guitar builders and not forum junky whiners. 'nuf said? I can say more.........
  5. I was thinking about this and I just want to clarify you are talking about "strumming" chords where you play all the notes at once correct? Since most bass is one note at a time I wanted to make sure because that's what I meant the above chords for. You can obviously pick them note by note but they all blend when strummed also. For some killer stuff liten to Flea from the Chili Peppers. He is best known for his funk slap stuff but he does throw down some mean jazz chords in a lot of their songs if you listen closely.
  6. I play the 1-5 (eg; G D)or the 4-8 (eg; C g) a lot for a good rythym groove. Just make up a rythym or play to a good staggering drum beat and the rythym will find you. I use a computer drummer that has several different styles of music at the click of a mouse. I play the 1-5-8 (G D g) to get a "happy" or "marching" beat depending on the cadence and groove you play. Strum it or try picking it in a 1,5,8,5 for a bum-ba-dee-da sound and after 30 seconds you'll find different picking patterns that won't drive you crazy like that one does Play the 1-4-8 (eg; G C g) for a good droning or sad sound. Try the 1-3-7 for ballads or a melancholy sound but remember it is difficult to play this in the first 3 positions or so for most people. I usually play it an octave up on the board so it's easier on the pinky. The fingering is pretty much the same all over the board and obviously can be moved into any key by shifting your fingering. Hope that's what you were looking for.
  7. The rctonewoods looks to be the same stuff Art has on eBay and the prices are similar. I went ahead and ordered some of the Carpathian and I'll see what she sounds like when I'm done. It has to sound better than "broken" Thanks for the input!
  8. Thanks unclej. that's almost word for word what that guy has in his listing I'm going to get a set and see what happens. I'm replacing a Sitka spruce top that sounded absoutely incredible before it was broken...... I'll post my progress and results as I go.
  9. Have fun!! And don't get poison ivy anywhere you don't want to explain (if it's that kind of camp)
  10. I can't hear you my freakin' ears are ringing too loud!!! I HATE that! Mine is always worse in the spring and summer so I always assumed it was allergy related....but I really have no idea what it's from. It goes away after AC/DC concerts because then I go completely deaf for 2 days
  11. Welcome mattia and thanks for the input. I have researched it on the web and over at MIMF. I haven't been there in a while and maybe now is a good time to pop in and research some more. I didn't realize a top would be so inexpensive (see my Carpathain Spruce thread) so now it has to be a go!! PS: Your user name is freakin' me out - bad! eddiefletcher's bro was a member here and died 2 years ago....his user name was matia. When I first saw your name my heart stopped for a few seconds Back on topic....sorry ed!
  12. Has anyone heard of Carpathian Spruce? I ran across it here: Carpathain The price is certainly right but I know nothing more about it than that. Has anyone used it?
  13. Please post links to pics - I'd really like to see the bass. It sounds like a project that can be tackled with pre-planning and patience. There are tons of references on the web. Do a google search for upright bass repair or the like and you should get lots of hits.
  14. I talked to a local guy that had made several acoustics and he said the same thing......I'm still apprehensive. Since I posted I ripped apart the T-Chief (mine is a C20 which is no longer made) and searched eBay for some top wood. I may just do it!!
  15. Very cool Ed! I'll keep an eye on this one. I was looking at my Tacoma Thunderchief on Sunday and deciding if I should attempt a body re-build and reuse the neck or toss it. Since it's a bolt on I am leaning toward the rebuild using the existing body as a mold. The top and back are busted (thanks to UPS) and I hate to toss it. I think I could reuse the sides if I am careful enough in removing the top and back. Any suggestions on this from anyone? I just checked new Tacoma (Fender) T-Chief prices and they are about $1000 street price...... Maybe buying a solid rosewood back and spruce top will cost me that much anyway. This is a BIG bass!! Keep at this one.....I'm looking forward to it!
  16. 41, but I think I said that already. Ugh! My troubles started at 13 when I grew 8-1/2" in one summer. I was the shortest kid in the class when I left for summer vacation in June and returned the tallest The cost was bad knees and stretch marks on my knees and waist that I still have I didn't help the situation by becoming marathon man in my early 20's and running 20+ miles 4-6 times a week. Running is BAD!! Bicycle is GOOD!! Remember that if you're young
  17. I use .45-.105 (roundwound) or .45-.110 (taperwound) and as low as I can get the action without buzzing. Oh yeah, those would be bass strings for those of you going I play mostly blues and bluesy rock (Allman Bro's, Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd, etc) and my own style of stuff which resembles a mix jazz and pop and blues.
  18. You know.....my neck lam has plenty of room for a wide nut and I don't have a fretboard yet IIRC the LightWave bridge is individual saddles so i could make it as wide as I need to. BTW I drink at least 8 cups of water a day and usually closer to 1 gallon. With the vitamins and supplements I take I need the water to get them in my system properly. I also drink a half gallon of milk a day......I'm from Wisconsin
  19. Now it works. I took out the "www" for you matt.
  20. Sitting at the computer all day is the main reason I stretch my hands so much. I do take Aleve most every day for my knees although I have been taking it less and less since I started on a strict vitamin and supplement regimen that seems to be helping my knee pain but strangely, not my hands. They do feel better this week and maybe it has to do with the excessive heat or working outside more now. I don't really know Maybe I should just get the bow out for my upright and start using that instead of my fingers on my electrics.
  21. Link does not work. Edit: Thanks feylya.....I see I left the "oject" on the end of it when I copy/pasted
  22. Amen to that! If you don't like it then leave. Why hang around if it is such a horrible experience for you? It makes no sense at all to me. Last year during our growing pains I took a few weeks off to because the whiners were taking over and it appeared they were going to continue to whine until the rest of the forum bent over in submission. It ain't going to happen this time and thanks to the people that do speak up and drive off the whiners we won't see that mess again. Don't like the channel, change it. Don't like the forum, leave and start your own.....we've seen it before. Remember this is Brain's house, respect it. Would you like it if we all showed up at your house and pissed on your curtains?? Didn't think so...........
  23. It really is Kevan that posted this and the reason is as Drak pointed out. It seems to me there is a sudden rift here based with maturity on one side and I'm not quite sure what on the other. It will pass and to those that keep posting......don't worry, I've been called much worse names than what has been said here and I'm old enough, mature enough and have enough faith to let it go. Life is short, why spend it hating people?? Read my sig and maybe you'll get a little insight on the "anti's" that have been here lately and maybe they'll get a little insight on themselves also.
  24. 2 seconds on google............. The Stick There was a video posted on hear a year or so ago that may be on that site. I didn't have time to look around. Very cool instrument. Edit: I just looked again, the video is under "The Stick Method" link. There are 2 vid's.
