Progress On Lp Build

Recommended Posts

here is where im at so far. i had like a 2 week period where i could not get anything done because i was broke. but finally got the neck template and the neck wood(flame maple). it is almost impossible to even see the figure on the neck, but assure you its there! i have decided i am going to go with a cocobolo fretboard. it matches this mahogany well. please comment!

here are some pics

Nice stuff! I like the neck, the maple looks very nice and I can see the figure in the closeups. The headstock turned out very nice, I like the shape, might be a tad metal for the body, but that never bothers me. I don't think its that important for the headstock to match the body style wise, it can help, but not all that important in my book. How did you end up doing the scarf joint? It looks nice and clean. Did you build the body from scratch? I can't remember if it was bought or built. Either way its nice and if built its very clean and nice. Well keep the progress pics coming and keep up the good work. Jason

i did the scarf joint the way Godin guitars do there headstocks. cut the angle, clamp the cut off piece, the flip the neck over and stick it under the clamped wood and glue it. if that makes sense.

Nice! I remembered that grain on the body and thought you built it, but I also had this idea you were working on a "kit" guitar which I think was someone else, so I wasn't sure which it was. It looks good though, very nice wood and very clean so far. Glad you included some pics too, it helped me remember. Good stuff and keep the progress pics coming. J

Nice! Only thing I'd change would be to reverse the headstock, but it's too late now :D What kind of pickups are those?

they are active pickups from guitarheads. 1/3 the price of emgs and are the best sounding metal pickups i have ever heard. dead quiet without sheilding. i think i will go with gold or black hardware instead. i cant choose between those.

Nice Build! Im diggin Les Pauls and plan to build one after the Tele's finished. One thing Im curious about is you drilled the bridge holes before the neck/fingerboard was fitted, will the scale length land in the right spot? -Vinny

yes it will. the body template was made for a 22 fret 24.75" scale length neck and thats what the neck will be. i have measured it out where the neck will sit, and it works. but ya i dont really like doing it this way though.

you said they were the best metal pickups youve ever heard, thats a pretty bold statement! how do you think they stack up against emgs? i was considering buy a set of emg 81s for my gibson sg, however the guitarhead pups seem like a steal as far as active pups go. how do they sound and measure up to emgs?

they sound better than the emgs ive tried. ive tried emgs in a jackson dk and an esp viper. i think they have a much crisper sound and a ton of mids wich is what i like. you definitly need a neck pickup tho because the bridge doesnt have very good cleans just like emgs. but i have never tried guitarheads in a set or neck thru guitar. i think they will sound better. i dont think i will ever use emgs again.

Are you comparing these to the EMG 81/85 (zakk wylde) set? I am currently building a guitar and am wanting to go active pickups in it. I am looking for something that has a really heavy sound and is capable of getting pinch harmincs very easily like the EMG's do.

yes that is compared to the 81/85 combo. ive never used the 81/81 or ther 81/60. but it seems like the guitarheads neck pickup is just like the 60. great mids and low end, great for rythm. yes you can get harmonics very easily with them. but i dont know how consistant these are. i have only used one set. i pulled these out of my v to put on this guitar.
