svartberg
I am building an explorer and i wanted to make a neck out of Croatian oak cause it is a realy hard wood BUT i got a small peace and i will cut it and use for a fretboard but i bought peace of walnut and it is realy good quality. So a question for you guys: How are your experiences with walnut necks?
orgmorg
Walnut works fine for necks. I've done a few with it, seems to add a good deal of warmth. I like to use it on guitars with really hard body woods to balance out the tone.

Haven't had any experiance with it but hopefully soon I want to make an all walnut guitar but I also want to make an all padauk one and that's probably coming first, I haven't heard of using oak for a fingerboard though. Prostheta
Brian May's Red Special has an oak fingerboard, albeit painted black....
zyonsdream
I've used black walnut for a neck. I used carbon rods to add a bit of strength but if you look at harness charts it compares to mahogany.

MzI
I made a 5 piece lam 1/4 sawn set thru, the only thing that made it fail was hitting a concrete floor.

foil1more
would a walnut and flame cherry laminate be strong enough?
fryovanni
would a walnut and flame cherry laminate be strong enough? Walnut is fine for necks Cherry is fine for necks Actually, they are very nice woods for necks. Just be sure as with any wood, that you choose good clear straight grain wood that is well aclimated(dry and stable).
dugg
Quite a few 'hippie sandwich' neckthroughs are made with maple and walnut. The most resonant, 'live' neck I've ever made was solid poplar with 3 CF rods placed as far to the edges (cross section) and bottom of the neck as possible. Howfar
I have a walnut neck with pau ferro board on a walnut Jazzmaster body. I just used Danish oil to finish. I love it. Very warm. Smells good too.
