killemall8
Working on this one while working on another explorer too. This one is just kinda for something to do while other things on the explorer are either drying, or whatever. I also have the maple and walnut neck glued up and being scarfed right now. ScottR
Dude, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that mahogany! On the other hand, I guess you're over the idea of a curly mapel top now. SR
killemall8
yeah, I did not want to wait and pay so much for a maple top. So just going with what it is.
killemall8
Got the neck mostly done today. Im sorry, I just couldn't get myself to use anything but a KL headstock... I also avoided misaligned neck lams. I put a walnut veneer in between the scarf, so if they are misaligned, you wont be able to tell. Metalhead28
Looks pretty cool with the KL headstock. In the second pic, the scarf looks kind of crooked, hopefully just a trick of the photo?
killemall8
Thanks! Its not really the actual scarf, Its just that when i ran it over the jointer after, It was not square, so it cut more on one side than the other. I always have that problem too... killemall8
A little update. Been waiting for a fretboard. I bought some bloodwood, and it is here. Not the brightest red of bloodwood, but still has some nice grain to it. Tomorrow I'll slot it, and glue it to the neck. Then comes the easy stuff. killemall8
Neck carved, Fretboard radiused, sanded to 2k grit. Next is to fret, then I'll rout neck pocket, and finish the heel. I am goign to measure my fret slots 34384 times, to make SURE that they are the EXACT right size. Im tired of these fretting problems ive been having. ae3
I love a chunk volute
Buter
Looks good so far Luis. How does that neck feel when you're fretting the first fret? I've just done a geet with a slightly smaller volute in the same place and I felt that I put it a bit too high up on the neck. It is slightly annoying when playing all the way down on the neck. The next time I carve a volute I will shift in forwards a bit to be more under the nut. Cheers Buter
killemall8
Thanks Buter. It feels great, actually. you will notice i made it a lot thinner, and further up than my other ones. The others were a little more in the way than i'd like. So with this one, I mad it thinner, and moved it up a lot. Feels absolutely great, I am very happy with the way it feels. marksound
I think that neck needs a volute.
killemall8
Nah, it will be fine without one, just they way it is
killemall8
What do you guys think? Trans Red, or trans black? I have been itching to to a trans black guitar. But i love red! I am more on the side of trans black though.
Johnny Foreigner
What's the benefit of leaving the part of the pickup route that isn't the 'ears' bit higher than the 'ears' bit? As in, what's the disadvantage of doing the entire route to the depth of the bits at the side?
ScottR
The only advantage or disadvantage is the little bit of time saved or expended, depending on which way you go. SR

I am more on the side of trans black though. Either trans red or trans black would look cool. I'd probably go with the trans black on this. And maybe try using a black grainfiller to make the grain stand out a bit more?
killemall8
Hmm, I'll decide when i get my dye, and i test it out. I finished the black grainfiller today.
killemall8
Strung it up for the first time today. FINALLY! Its been a while since i fretted one that did not need work. Plays REALLY well, and this neck shape/thickness feels great. I had my doubts about this one, but I think its gign to be one of my favorites. I also settled on deep trans red. I did not like the way the trans black tests came out. just need to finish and it, then i'll throw the conversion varnish on it.
