nakedzen
Green guitar moved forward again! Knob positions and control cavity done, new fretboard installed and body dyed green. I'll have to sand it back, missed a couple scratches. Dye is a bit blotchy too.
nakedzen
Sanded the green back to 320 grit, dyed again with less blotchiness, shellac and couple coats of oil on now. The ss frets I got from my friend for the guitar were ready cut pieces with no radius. Hmm. Let's see how a small amount of Titebond on the tang plus clamps for 30 minutes works. So far so good, pretty slow going though.

nakedzen
Thanks! I quite like how it turned out. Applying shellac sucked some of the dye out but I think it improved the look.
Bizman62
Instead of having sucked the green out I'd rather say that the shellac enhanced the browns which already can be seen in previous pictures. Nonetheless the looks got more organic, somehow it reminds me of early fall, the time of harvesting vegetables. Frostbitten potato leaves and such...
Prostheta
If the dye is soluble in alcohol, the alcohol in the shellac will re-mobilise it pretty easily, yeah. Ideally dye needs to be shot over with a sealer coat rather than it being hand-applied. If it absolutely has to be rubbed, fast swipes of something like a 1-1/2lb cut can get shellac on there enough to maintain the dye. Just don't repeat swipes over the same area. Once the second application is going on, pretty much do the same to not burn through. It's pretty tricky.
nakedzen
Yeah I expected the dye to lift a bit since the shellac was soluted in IPA. I agree the color came out pretty nice, very organic. Great info for future use there Prostheta, thanks!
nakedzen
Haven't updated this build in a while, but made steady progress regadless. Frets installed, neck shaped and dyed. Shellac plus three coats of oil, logo done and 10 coats of nitro sprayed. Now we wait. Frets installed Neck shaped Couple coats green dye The way shellac enhances the grain is really hard to capture on photos, it glimmers in a 3D way. Last coat of oil Nitro went pretty well, not much sanding to do before final polish.

nakedzen
Time to get this one done! Nut filed, just the fret crown and polish and control cavity cover left.
nakedzen
Here's as far it's going to go in my hands, friend wants to mess around with the wiring options so he'll do those. I'll do the control cavity cover once I get the plastic in the mail.
asgeirogm
It looks kind of toxic with that color and the beautiful grain, I like it! Edited November 12, 2021 by asgeirogm
nakedzen
Decided to refinish the orange strat a bit better. Replace the brown stain with jet black, fix the cracked binding on the body, fill some holes, sand back scratches etc. Also had some rose red dye from Angelus left over.
ADFinlayson
I'm liking the pink. Angelus rose and light rose are great colours, I use the light rose a lot over yellow to make a much more interesting orange than just orange because you get pinks, yellow and orange depending on how you look at it, works particularly well if you use a water based yellow as they don't mix as well.
nakedzen
This is the light rose. It makes an interesting combination with blue fade too. The top still has some orange from the old dye job, you're right it's pretty interesting look when it's not all one pink color.
Prostheta
What sort of lacquer is going over the dye? If it's nitro then I would think that there would be a very slight contribution of yellow to the dyed colour, making the pink slightly warmer, but certainly not peach (maybe in 20-30yrs!). Also, where are you sourcing your nitro? Here or elsewhere in the EU?
nakedzen
Probably truoil. But I get rattlecan nitro from redblack.fi
Prostheta
Tru-Oil will definitely add a very yellow cast to any clearcoat, more amber if anything.
nakedzen
Yeah I guess I'll need to do a test piece on how it'll look.
nakedzen
Just remembered, this one is the same dye+tru oil, so it didn't affect the tone too much. Tru oil it is!
Prostheta
Wow, well I don't see any peach or amber tone in that pink or any greening in the blue, so go for it! I can see a little in the grain where the oil has probably built up.
nakedzen
One coat of tru oil on to seal the dye. Got the ferrules out! Backside will be black.
