MKGBass
I hadn't though about the grain pattern. I still like the binding idea though. What other pieces of (scrap?) wood do you have lying around? If you don't want to spend more money, what do you have that could potentially work well? IMO it looks very sharp if you match the wood of the backplate to something else on the instrument. I'm working on a bass right now thats a light colored body, but I threw a wenge backplate on it to match the neck. It really accentuates things. tsl602000
I'm also in doubt if I should put on a flamed maple binding on the neck, like I did on my telecaster:
westhemann
don't want black binding?
tsl602000
on a Brazilian rosewood board? nah....
MKGBass
Hmmm....maybe do something unusual if you plan on binding the fretboard as well. The flamed might be a little much if you also have the curly maple neck. Maybe don't bind it at all?
tsl602000
yeah, but the flame bind will be from the same wood as the neck...
MKGBass
That's what I'm saying. Unless you're going for that sort of look. Maybe you could route a channel for the fingerboard so the binding would be continuous? If you could pull that off, I'd definately vote for you in the next presidential election. tsl602000
hmmm... I dunno yet. I could pull that off, but the neck blank isn't thick enough for that. Too bad I didn't run for office this year...

daveq
tsl, I love the look of that guitar!! I have a question about the arm rest area: did you contour it at all? It doesn't look that way but sometimes it's hard to tell from pics. Do you (or anyone else) know if it is difficult to place binding around a body with an arm rest contour? tsl602000
I have a question about the arm rest area: did you contour it at all? no, the reason? check answer #2... Do you (or anyone else) know if it is difficult to place binding around a body with an arm rest contour? Yes, it's difficult... that's why I opted for a strat without the armrest
Myka Guitars
Beautiful work, just awesome. I love the lines in the wood too. You could not have found a nicer piece. I have a project that I just started with spalted maple. It is a strange wood indeed. As far as stability goes I think that using it as a top wood glued over a core of more solid wood it should hold up fine.
krazyderek
Haven't done much as I'm waiting for the hardware.. but I did add a binding good call on the black binding, really brings out the little black (rot?) lines in the wood
tsl602000
good call on the black binding, really brings out the little black (rot?) lines in the wood Did you just call my wood rotten, Derek? The black binding is Alex' idea.. .we discussed it and I wasn't sure... He opted for the black and I decided to do so...
