JamesRaven23
Hello, I bought a new (used) guitar a couple of days ago(Ibanez RG320) and I ordered an amp from ebay which just arrived today(Fender Frontman 38w) When I powered it up, I noticed that there's a low buzzing/humming sound which increased when I turned up the Gain and Drive volume knobs. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or if I got a defective amp? Thank you, James
Librero
sounds like a grounding problem...
canuckguitarist
Well some buzzing should be normal. Especially if you have the gain cranked up to the hiss zone. Unless it's a significant amount I wouldn't be worried about it.
westhemann
sounds normal...unless it is excessive
JamesRaven23
Well the buzzing doesnt get too bad unless I click on the drive select switch .. I'm not sure what's the pupose of the switch, all it does is make the buzzing REALLY loud when i turn the gain volume higher than zero. Librero
well, i've heard even new fender amps really hum loudly when switched to their overdrive channels. is all this happening even without a guitar plugged in?
JamesRaven23
Yep, it buzzes even while the guitar is unplugged. I've even tried it out with another guitar and the cable is new.. so i'm stumped. James
JamesRaven23
Here's a link to an amp like mine. The second and third knobs are the ones causing the problems as well as the white drive select switch between the two... I think it's a model PR241 http://pics.comsyre.com/A00001e/P027390.JPG James
ManWhoSoldTheWorld
all amps buzz more when on the overdrive channel.... but if its really really loud, it might be a problem, but yeah, buzzing does go up with gain and drive.

James Wait... one question: does it buzz on the clean channel (and no distortion pedals or any of that stuff)?
JamesRaven23
Yep, it buzzes on the clean channel without any effects at all. Thanks, James
Curtis P
my Peavey used to buzz like mad when i got it (used) turned out there was lots of dust in the utput jack of the amp, give a little blow in, close your eyes, dust hurts in the eyes, if it aint that, I am stumped as well Curtis
JamesRaven23
Well, it was really dusty when it arrived so hopefully cleaning it will help. THanks, James
Scott Rosenberger
Get a Cheap Circuit tester and test the Power Outlet you have it plugged into. I have a suspicion that the power outlet isn't properly grounded
zeggs
QUOTE "I have a suspicion that the power outlet isn't properly grounded" I have the same problems with my amp. However, I brought it over to someone else's house, and used it in a rehearsal studio, and there was NO buzzing. Only when i used it in my own apartment. I think the problem lies with your power outlet.
