  1. Looking at all the V's from different companies, the 59 Gibson body style still has the best upper fret access out of all of them and its such a simple design. The all Access Boat ramp does fit more into the V your building though, very Jackson like.
  2. 83 Gibson Flying V http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/MzI...uitars/86be.jpg
  3. I can definitely understand why your going hollow instead of solid. Mine weighs in at about 11 pounds but it sure does have a nice tone to it.
  4. Quilted Birds Eye Maple with Mineral staining. Not sure what I am going to do with it just yet so it sits on the shelf.
  5. They look awesome. I cant wait to get back into building. All of the drawings I do, if I am using someone else design, I take a picture import into Autocad and then throw my twists into it so the design is how I want it. In particular for these templates, I took the Jackson Soloist as a base, set it up for 24 3/4 Gibson Scale, set neck, my electronics layout, and a semi AANJ.
  6. I made a 5 piece lam 1/4 sawn set thru, the only thing that made it fail was hitting a concrete floor.
  7. My last couple coats, I start with 800 grit, completely sand the body, then add a coat. Let that dry sand it with 1000, add a coat, let it dry. 1200 1500 2000 etc that way everything gets good and leveled out then after then last coat I use the previous, in my case 2000 grit and sand again.
  8. A little more involved, remove the fretboard and truss rod, cut a scarf joint and then go from there.
  9. Try turning the push pins around, i.e. super glue the push part to the template and then with enough pins you should be able to support the template just on the pin part with less distortion to the overall look.
  10. With all maple and EMGs you should get a nice clear tone. Going with the western itll reduce the brightness a touch. I have a ESP Explorer solid eastern maple neck and body with EMGs and can say its still one of my best sounding guitars I have. You can always cut the Highs down on the eq, you just cant add them.
  11. The screws holding the control cavity cover really kill the back. Id look into velcro or small magnets to get a cleaner look.
  12. Hey i go to curtis to get my wood. Great place.
  13. Make sure you wax the ends or your wood will warp and twist like you have not seen before. MzI
  14. From my past experience, glue purple heart as normal, dont wipe it with anything. Titebond 1 works great and Ive never had any problems with joints coming undone. As far as finish and grain filling: grain fill with epoxy, dont bother staining, and dont use minwax poly. One guitar I made I sprayed with component poly and its still great, nice bright purple and all. The other guitar I have I wiped on Minwax Gloss poly and its turning brown and the finish is cracking from shrinking. Mike
  15. TTT, New price edited in original post. Mike
  16. Hoenestly I think you need to stop listening to what Ed Roman has to say. JK. You have a Dual Rectifier which screams heavy metal. I can play my showmaster Strat through my Single Recto and get a badass metal tone out of it. As far as a properly set up guitar, it can be properly set up with 10s or 12s or 13s and will still sound the same. If you really want an adjustment to your tone change out your pickups for a higher output pickup like a set of Duncan JBs or Distortions or a set of EMGs. Mike
  17. Ive played with my guitar tuned down 2 full steps which would be C i believe. Guitar was a gibson flying V 98 one of the newer style ones. Anyways I used my regular string set up, 10 46 daddarios and had no problem whatsoever. Would it have been better if I put 11s or 12s on, sure but my guitar is set up for 10s. Honestly stick with a normal gauge like 10s and get/make another guitar to set up for low tunnings. Plus you wouldnt want to ruin an amazing guitar like that. Mike

  19. Gibson is using corian as a nut material on some of their guitars now instead of bone. MzI
  20. how bout a pic of the headstock, it doesnt look like a normal explorer style from what I can tell. MzI
  21. Gibson made an acoustic les paul model a few years back that had no sound hole so maybe check that out on Gibson's website. MzI
  22. Im currently in the process of making 3 set neck korina 59 flying V's. As of right now either all of them will be clear with black pickguard or one will be black with a black pickguard. Those two combos are by far my favorite. I did make a 59 outta purple heart with a black pickguard that I think looks pretty damn good. But utimately I think the clear finish is the best without a doubt. MzI
  23. you really cant generalize on wood because every piece is going to sound different even if one piece is harder then another. Generally hard maple vs soft maple the hard maple will sound brighter. Spalted maple is a different story altogether. It is completely dependent on how much of the wood is rotted away. The more it is rotted the more sponge like it is going to be. Thats why generally spalted maple tops are rather thin. Im currently working on a couple spalted maple top guitars, one is on a mahogany back. The top is still fairly together but is only around 1/4" think so it will not affect the tone that much. On the other hand the guitar will have a 3 piece maple neck and highout put pickups which will help with the excess warmth of the mahogany. MzI
  24. eastern rock maple is hard maple, brighter sounding then western big leaf which is a soft maple. MzI
  25. Usually 1/4" to 1/2" and up will start affecting the tone of the body. MzI
