  1. That stuff is pretty easy to cut/carve with a knife when dry. You could probably flatten it with a sanding block if need be.
  2. Cool. Not sure what I think about the headstock but I appreciate the pics all the same. I would be VERY interestedin seeing progress pics of the finish.
  3. That was helpful. I would resaw it into two tops. I dont think that deep a carve would look good on a tele. Maybe a 3/4" top at the most if you were to carve it. With a 1 1/8" top you would only have a 5/8" back which would look odd to me.
  4. I used a 1/8 radius roundover on the tele I'm working on. It looks about right to me. I did a 1/4 radius on a tele body a while ago (before I trashed it) and it looked to be too much to me. I like the 1/8.
  5. I wouldnt think that it would be acceptable over that long a length. I saw it a while ago and wasnt too impressed. I dont think it's meant to be a precision cut.
  6. Thats a good deal (right now) but some of those knots are pretty gnarly.
  7. Ive been to HF a few times and its been tough to walk out of there w/out buying some sort of tool but being that I am in college and have no money I figure it's better to buy once and spend a lot than buy several times and end up spending more. I will say that my HF C and f-clamps are awesome and at $1.99 and $1.64 respectively I always feel like I stole somthing when I pick up a few. The arbor presses are nice too, that will be my next purchase. Otherwise, I havent been impressed with anything else there really. Like GBTexas said, its really hit or miss there.
  8. Why do you say that? That's certainly not the case. A fender style neck made from mahogany may need to be re-enforced but it would certainly not make a neck heavy guitar. I doubt you could even tell the difference weight wise.
  9. You can get almost the same set of files from Warmoth for about $60 excepth the two largest files are .040 and .050 vs. .046 and .056.
  10. Did you get that bridge for $1?!
  11. Do you have a pic? I cant imagine even the cheapest import guitar being this badly done. 4mm off?!
  12. If you try to "saw" the wood with the router you will burn your bit up MUCH faster than if you rough cut most of the excess off first.
  13. Hyunsu, did you ever finish the carved top PRS?
  14. Cool mod! Did you have any issues with the chrome chiping when you drilled into it?
  15. I meant he made the right choice with the router over the bandsaw.
  16. If you have to get the bit for the hotrod, get it here. All the bits I have gotten from whiteside have been great. I use a 3/16" spiral bit from them for the LMI rods I have.
  17. thats cool. My preliminary drawings have a 2 degree pickup plane with the neck inline with that. I read that double cut LP jr's have about a 2 degree plane and I figured that would be about right. I was just gonna raise the neck up off the body a bit and leave it there. The PRS guitars I have seen appear to have the neck run parallel to the pickup plane. Who knows though. I think you are right though in that you can only plan so much. You have to anticipate adapting some things, especially on your first build of a new instrument. I need to get all my hardware before I actually lock into the dimensions. How thick of a back/top are you going for again? What type of bridge are you using?
  18. I like the chrome on chrome pickup combo. Back to the PRS thing, Alex, have you worked out the neck angle and pickup plane?
  19. Me too, I'm planning a PRS style guitar as well. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
  20. Make sure to add one of these to you order. One chunk of wood, "Mede" in the US, man this thing has everything!!!!
  21. The pillow block housings are roughly that much but the linear bearings are another $35-45 on top of that. But you are corret in that they can be had cheaper. You just need to watch out that you get quality bearings in a setup like this. There are several Thomson setups on the Bay' now. Erik, what are the dimensions of the rods?
  22. I just ordered "one necks worth" of wire from Warmoth. It came a three pieces, pre-bent at a bit over 2' per. For $6 its a better deal than Stew-mac. Pre-cut is nice though.
  23. The silicone spray I used would spray on wet and after a few seconds of lige "buffing" it was dry. It never collected any dust. I have heard the warnings regarding silicone and wood but as James said, almost any lube is probably bad for wood. Just use it sparingly whatever you use.
