Hey, Kevan (and Brian too), I just thought I owed you guys an apology. At first this whole reworking seemed a little Orwell/Ashcroftian, but I definitely see where you guys are coming from now that the changes have started to take effect.

I still was wondering why you guys leave the rant section viewable if you won't let people post in it. Seems like that doesn't really have the effect you were looking for, if new members to whom we want to seem respectable can read what current members posted in there, even if it was a month ago. I'd hate to see the content of the slam thread lost, as it contains some of the best "quotables" I've ever seen, but I'd put in a vote for either hiding it entirely (for now at least) or reopening it to the masses. Just one thought. I'd love to see this forum more professional and respectable, but I think that could coexist with a slam thread; and if the consensus is that these two things cannot peacefully coexist, it seems to make little sense to still leave it up anyway (as long as the content can be archived somewhere; I volunteer my harddrive if necessary!)

Just another thought to be presented to the masses.

Mod have you seen the threads on the last day? I think that all the discussion in here have caused that all the inmature kids started cursing and acting silly, and then come up with , "shut up or I call Kevan!" I think that there are a lot of leave days saved and that some people got use or loose days and need to take them! What's the deal? This has gone from the best guitar luthiers thread to a kindergarden or daycare center for baby luthiers! I guess until some people get forced vacations and that gets anounced they won't stop posting crap coments... Or I guess that Im too old and ain't got no sense of comedy anymore.

having "baby luthiers" is a good thing, isn't it?

is that not the point?

to teach people how to build guitars?

don't take this the wrong way...but i am not sure of your interest in this...i could swear that you once told me that you had no interest in building guitars, that you were only here to chat with other guitarists...

i am not saying there is anything wrong with that...just not sure how much interest you have in having a building forum

Only when the baby luthiers:

learn and show respect

are well-behaved and polite

know their manners and their place

and realize that the world (and PG) doesn't revolve around them.

It's like raising kids I guess, it takes a truckload of patience

That will be an interesting nut to crack, because PG is all about helping noob builders out, not catering so much to the veterans like the MIMF, except that as a rule, the noobs bring with them the 'accomodations' of their age group, which can be immaturity in all of it's different forms.

And there's nothing you can do to stop it, you can't ask a 13-year old to act like a 25 year old.

But I'm not real interested in hanging out at a guitar-builder day-care center either.

So we are faced with an interesting dilemma:

How to keep the forum 'loose' and enjoyable (most adults can handle this, sometimes it's too much freedom for kids to handle tho) so the adults will want to stay and participate. I'm referring to the adult language and rant section I guess. Most adults would be able to handle these areas with enough self-control to not let things get out of hand.

And how to handle the young ones who are just being themselves, although sometimes rather irritating.

And how to mingle these two worlds with enough control that no one feels tyrannized, but things are not 'left to the dogs'.

You completely missed the point.

And browsing Gilmer with a quote post window doesnt help for propt posting :D

Smitty- that wasn't a double post. It was two separate posts with 2 minutes between them.

If you're within 5 minutes of your last post, just edit your first one. Esp. if it's only 3 or 4 words to add. You're wasting screentime, scroll time and our time with (2) three-word posts back to back.

im thinking, we should change the default options in the search to automatically search for all posts and newer not the 30 days and newer that it is right now.

also i think all the tutorial sections should have the default as display all threads and newer, not (again) the 30 days and newer

This is a great idea. When Brian dries off and fixes his hair from the hurricane currently blowing thru his neighborhood, we'll get on that.

No apology needed. I understand it's all a little scary at first. I'm glad you're OK with the coming changes. Is there still snow on Mt. Robson? Is Bertuzzi out of jail yet? :-)

The Rant Section remains read-only because there is, in a few rare threads, some decent info in there. If you liked some of the slams, cool. Copy and paste....onto A DIFFERENT site. :-) We haven't made a final decision on whether to leave it, or totally pull it offline and burn it to CD. We'll let you guys know what happens.

I find it impossible to go back and forth from a thread about a project- "Hey man- that inlay is SWEET!" to a slam thread where you tell the same guy- "It looks like a spam, only smaller." That makes absolutely no sense. Slams are gone. I hope you all enjoyed them.

Have you ever seen a slam thread on a truly professional site? Me neither.

I've seen a couple of them Maiden, and so has Wes. We will be dealing with it in an appropriate manner, and in accordance with the rules that every member here has agreed to.

Views from the bench aren't that far away. You know who you are.

well no, but have you ever compleatly laughed your ass of almost everyday on a truly professional site?

make seperate search functions for the vew new posts, so that you dont run into the rants when you are looking at serious stuff. if its possible?

The rant section is a lot of fun, so what if some people dont think its 'professional'

back in the day, people didnt think long hair was professional. look at half our mods now.

were just ahead of the times :D

(my god, can you imagin what the future will be like)

I kind of agree. Even tho I was never a regular there (rant section), it was one of the quirky things about this place that made me like it. It gave it character.

Hell, I know where the MIMF is, I'm a long-time member, but I spend 95% of my time here, not there. B)

I hope you guys don't squeeze all the personality out of the joint in the cleanup process. :D

If I want to laugh, I'll go to www.drummerjokes.com. Keeps me in tears for hours.

:-)

Don't worry Drak- there will be plenty of character on the site, even in the legit threads.

Just wait until you guys see the pics of the original prototypes for the Tremol-No. I'm sure I'll never hear the end of it......"Is that a door hinge that you Dremel'd down?"..."Holy crap! Is that plastic?!?!"...LOL

Just a little less screwing off and a little more posting of real information. I don't think it's that big of a request....esp. considering the site and forum name.

:-D

Kevan.. You summed it up quite nicely and I couldn't have said it better myself. If your looking to shoot the bull, then there are tons of places on the web for that kinda stuff. I'm with you on this, I have never had any use for the Rant, Slam or other off the wall talk on this site. I bet I don't have over 5 total post in all of those combined, to me I could care less if it was taken out. I have been skipping those sections for a long time, so it's no big deal. Some might feel that it's needed, but whatever you guys decide will be fine with me. I can still skip it just the same.. lol Personally though, I come here to learn, watch progress pics, see great looking guitars, and talking about the construction of guitars. That's why I can't keep away from the site.. lol It's very addictive, because you feel like you'll miss out on some valuable building information if you miss a day.. lol I personally made a challenge to myself this year that I would learn something new about guitar building each day of the year no matter what it took. I wouldn't even let myself go to sleep until I learned at least one small bit of information that I didn't know before. If I didn't get it from here, I'd research the net, or read some of Brian's or other peoples great tutorials on the tutorial page. That to me is what makes PG such a success, it's a place where you can learn constantly if you chose to do so. Rock on PG!!!

well no, but have you ever compleatly laughed your ass of almost everyday on a truly professional site?

come on, most i have laughed is about 2 or 3 times, because the slams were all the same drivel about ppls sisters/wives/mums and usually just mixing peoples names with swear words, it was truely lacking in intelligence. there were a few witty slams, but nothing worth keeping, i say delete it.

and by the way, wes doesnt loose any posts (if im not mistaken) when you delete a thread, its the same as deleting a post, you dont loose anything, and if anything got lost Brian or someone could give wes his several hundred thousand posts.

i think that along with the search fuunction being set to the beginning as default (which i have wanted since i joined here) i think the main topics could be set to the beginning as well, unless these are the same thing.

Kevan, thanks for cleaning the site up, far too many pointless posts in tutorial or pictorial threads. also that rant section i think would give a bad impression to anyone who visits and decides to check it out. perhaps make it available to download so all the precious (repeated, tedious) jokes and retorts can be saved. the best bit in the entire slam thread was the first few pages when alex was there, i think i laughed at it. it really is beyond a joke though!

what are the rules for idiot posting? i mean, whats the penalty for being a dork and saying something like "tits" in the middle of a pictorial or something... you know who you are. this is irritating when its a fantastic pictorial, but gets degraded with stupid kiddie posting. i did use the report button, but i dont think it works. any news on that?

thanks

Mike

I never said that. I said that I am more of a player than a builder.

I want to learn to build guitars.

It doesn't matter that I'm not a builder yet, my point still stands. This is a forum for teaching. If it was filled with pros completely, you wouldn't be teaching anyone new how to build guitars.

First off, congratulations Kevan, very well deserved upgrade to your status. Drinks all around.

Second of all, and this is addressed to everyone, if I'm ever out of line please tell me so. I'm on an even keel most of the time but I get cranky without my coffee in the morning.

I'm all for signature and avitar control. At home, where I am now, I'm on dial up and I just had to wait for a rather large animated footer to load before I got the real meat of a thread. Avitars can do much the same thing. However, there is a limit set on the board already about the size (pix by pix and kB), so really the content should be at the discretion of the user. Porn and slaughtered animals should not be appropriate for an avitar, for example. I'm no prude, but this is a guitar forum and we should be professional enough to respect this place for a family audience.

And now back to talking about guitars... :D

You are missing the hole point!!! It's not thta I or any body else don't want inexperienced Luthiers here, because I'm one! It's when you or others start cursing, posting stupid replies, or just acting silly, to call attention to your self.

Only when the baby luthiers:

***learn and show respect***

***are well-behaved and polite***

Here Drak sum it all up... See the stars up there, this is what I was mostly reffereing to. Just like this quoterefering about the Mods on the friday thread!

thats what theyre here for man. im just making them feel needed.

lol. watch the double post.

dont worry.il not swear.

Sounds familiar doesn't it.

We here need respect, most of this people, this is either their hobby or the way they bring the food to their tables... and they come here to ensure that everything is running smooth and that the newbies like most of the ones making them waste their time get the right responses... I seen countless of them checking threads, and posting when there was some bad advise on them so that we didn't mess or guitars up, so respect them as you will like to be respected....

I thought I was a noob and then all of a sudden I'm a VIP and an old timer. I was surprised that I had such a low member number (47 or something). I try to keep thinking like a noob. I know I don't know everything. I suppose I still don't get tired of reading the same old posts.

My favorite is the first post that lists everything that they want, every possible wood, finish, pickups, the fact that it will play itself, etc... . Probably because that was my first post, I don't mind that. I never built that guitar, BTW. :D
