Firefox is generally a safer bet than IE; not too long ago, a big fuss was made about there being more documented 'security holes' in Firefox than in IE, but the thing is, they a) get fixed faster (note that that news story says older versions of Firefox are at risk) and :D are, as a rule, far less serious than the IE faults.

Besides, I wouldn't even want to try using non-tabbed browsing, and I have no particular love for Microsoft products...

Never had any reason not to use IE. Being a web developer I do ofcourse have about 8 browsers installed (and Gentoo Linux) (developing cross-browser friendly sites can be a real pain sometimes). Firefox has some nice plugins that can aid in developing web sites, but IE7 is on it's way and incorporates pretty much all the features seen in the other big browsers, and is supposed to get regular updates (unlike previous IE which hasn't changed much in about 3 years).

I maintain a site for one of our clients who recieves about 15,000 visits a day and these are the breakdowns from google-analytics:

Firefox is definitely becoming more popular, but is nowhere near 'taking over'.

I think as long as you have a decent firewall and don't go surfing on porn sites

errr, this is the internet. My mum calls it the dirty picture machine :D - Never venture near her history, I can tell you.

Bytrix, do you think a lot of that could be because people use the internet at work and IE is generally the standard work gubbins

True, but the whole point I was trying to make was that Firefox has it's risk too and isn't as secure as some would like you to believe. I'm not trying to defend IE, lord no.. btw if you noticed, I use Opera. They are the inventors of tabbed browsing, and even IE is going to use it in IE 7. I'm not saying Opera is safer either, actually you should always run the newest version no matter which browser you use.

Agreed. And frankly, I was using Opera for a very, very long time before I jumped on the Firefox bandwagon. I've never used IE as a main browser, and I don't plan on starting now...

Well, not just at work.. most home users use Internet Explorer, and it does what they want to do.. browse the internet. Firefox is widespread among the more technical minded people, the people who appreciate why Firefox is better. Most people using the internet couldn't care less what browser they're using.

No browser is 100% secure but in my experience IE is the worst for security. Not quite so bad now but it wasn't updated for years before Firefox starting nipping at its heels.

Having been the victim of a couple of drive-by ActiveX installs and Java virii I made the switch from IE a couple of years ago. Being a software engineer who deals with security issues on a regular basis I wouldn't recommend IE to anyone - seen to many people with major malware problems.

Now I only do a spyware sweep anually :D

Of course, not using Windows is the best security of all

:D
