killemall8
Alright, so i am finally getting aroudn to making the explorer prototype i had come up with a few months ago. I just picked up a 14ft board of mahogany. 10.5" wide and 2" thick. Found the best way to avoid the crack and still get a neck and a body out of the same cut: I actually ended up reversing them to get the neck cut from the most quartered side. Then i cut the neck blank part off with the bandsaw: Doesnt get any more quartered than this! Then i cut the body blank pieces.
killemall8
Then i lay them out and get the best match of grain: Join em up The other woods that will be used: Then i cut out the walnut and paduak stringers to be close the the samet thickness on the bandsaw, then run them through the planer together until they are the same thickness as the body blank wings. Testing the glue up: It is gluing up now. I will cut it out and take some pics after its done.

MiKro
Come on now boys, Meat is murder !! Tasty Tasty Murder Have not done an explorer in a while. Always makes me laugh the amount of timber the body uses up. There was atime that venison was just about the only red meat in my freezer. My daughter grew up on it. Now that's not as frequent. Enough of the hunting , I don't want to hijack K's build.
killemall8
Hijack all you want Mike. Hunting is just important to me as building I still have yet to get a deer. Actually, the only thing i have ever gotten in my 13 years of hunting was that cow elk back in '10.

killemall8
Haha, alright Mike The only thing left undecided is the headstock. I cant really think of a good matching headstock.

killemall8
Routed and rounded over. Thats all the work that will be done on the body until the neck is done. I have to wait for truss rods to get here.

Hey K, good to see you again. Take your usual headstock and tweak the wings to reflect the tweaks you've added to this body. SR

killemall8
Thanks guys! I used to hate bodies that were multi lam a few years ago. I have come to really like them now, if they are the right combination. I got my truss rods today ( love these, i always get them in 2 days from ordering) So i will get to work asap. killemall8
I couldnt get a headstock i wanted to match the body. I just finally settled on a reverse ESP headstock. I have the scarf gluing now. I will get the neck started soon.
killemall8
Only a bit of work done. Busy hunting and getting ready for a week long trip. Here is my high tech method of gluing scarfs. Just clamp it in a pipe clamp sideways.... I never understood why everybody had to make jigs and use pins when its really just this simple. Then my high tech fence for routing the truss rod. Cutting profile down

killemall8
Thanks Wes. My main problem was looking at it from the wrong perspective. And after i took that break, i realized i cant waste the talent i have been blessed with. so i am going at it with a different perspective and new inspiration.
